ODYSSEUS Sporty elegance in white gold: The latest A. Lange & Söhne watch family is growing. The ODYSSEUS now comes in white gold with an integrated rubber or leather strap. The sporty-elegant timepiece with the large-format date and day display and a water-resistant case features a grey dial with a special surface structure for a very textured effect.
Price: 39.500 Euro including 19 % VAT
Launched on 24 October 2019, exactly 25 years to the day after the debut of the first new-era timepiece collection by Walter Lange and Günter Blümlein, it was obvious that the ODYSSEUS was designed for active people who wish to wear their Lange watch even in situations when aprecision mechanical model would ordinarily be set aside. Its prominently sculpted design emphasises the dynamic personality of the watch. The second model of the new family combines a 40.5-millimetre white-gold case waterproof to 12 bar (120 metres) with a grey dial. White-gold hands and notched baton appliques assure good legibility against the dark background. The numerals of the outsize date and the letters of the large-format day display stand out in white on grey. With a height of 2.4 millimetres, they are easily readable even in poor light conditions. Like the hour and minute hands, the hour markers are luminous. The embossed groove structure beneath the applied hour markers and the subsidiary seconds scale enhances the textured effect of the dial. It contrasts against the glossy matt inner surfaces of the main and subsidiary dials. The red 60 on the bevelled argenté-coloured flange ring with the printed minute scale provides a subtle colour accent. The tapered buttons for correcting the day and the date are arranged above and beneath the crown. They accentuate the prominent shape of the three-part white-gold case. The finissage of the case and the lugs is characterised by the interplay of brushed surfaces and polished chamfers. Integrated straps are available in hand-stitched leather or black rubber. The latter features air ducts on the inside for superb wearing comfort.
The watch is powered by the L155.1 DATOMATIC manufacture calibre developed exclusively for the ODYSSEUS. Its name stands for the combination of a date mechanism and automatic winding. To guarantee high rate accuracy regardless of external factors, the balance operates at a frequency of 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour (4 hertz). Recessed poising screws minimise air turbulence that could affect the rate. The movement has a maximum power reserve of 50 hours. The skeletonised and partially black-rhodiumed central rotor with a centrifugal mass in platinum assures dependable energy delivery. In line with Lange’s philosophy, all parts are lavishly hand-finished and the movement is assembled twice. Many artisanal details can be discovered with a glance through the sapphire- crystal caseback. They include the German silver plate decorated with Glashütte ribbing, the wave pattern engraved on the balance bridge, and the screwed gold chaton above the escape wheel.
ZEITWERK MINUTE REPEATER Limited white-gold edition with deep-blue dial
Presented in 2015, the ZEITWERK MINUTE REPEATER is the world’s only watch that combines a mechanical jumping numerals display with a decimal minute repeater. The complicated timepiece - its assembly alone requires several months - has so far been available only in platinum. Five years after its debut, it now comes in a limited 30-watch edition in white gold with a deep-blue dial.

The ZEITWERK MINUTE REPEATER features a totally new interpretation of the classic complication. Its striking mechanism - it sounds ten-minute intervals instead of quarter-hours with double strikes - is a convincing logical complement to the “digital” display of the time.
As soon as the striking mechanism is activated with the repeater pusher at 10 o’clock, it sounds the time as indicated on the dial. One hears what one sees. And one sees what one hears. At 7.52, for instance, the gong hammer on the left strikes the low-pitched gong seven times, once for every elapsed hour. Then, five double tones are struck for the elapsed ten-minute intervals, followed by the right-hand hammer with two high strikes, one for each elapsed minute. The polished gongs and the black-polished gong hammers are subtly integrated in the design of the dial.

Both are strong characters and it also took a while when the Zeitwerk came to the markets until people accepted the design. Sam is happening actually to the Odysseus... will take some time, but will become an iconic watch design. Maybe sooner than some of the Nautilus and Royal Oak fan boys ever thought..

Best coverage on the web! Amazing insights into the brand. All of the nay sayers may not have heard when Wilhelm said that the Odysseus is waitlisted and in high demand. That portends that maybe a few folks like the watch quite a bit. Regardless of these said opinions! This watch is another hit! I can’t wait to see the rest of the line! Really torn with this watch. Blue dial is stunning. The grey on rubber looks fantastic... Im pretty sure 1 watch to go with a suit (leather) smart casual (steel) and shorts boat shoes and vest (rubber) would just give their customers something extra and i for one would be more likely to take the plunge. I always warm to brands that put patrons first. A lange are putting themselves first with the limitations. Lovely watch and typically Lange, but I'll go nautilus overseas or the Oak. Great content. This feels like deja vu...when the original came out I thought it was good looking but not great, BUT a few months ago in Dubai I got the chance to see one of the steel ones in person and it looks so much better in person so I imagine this is going to be more of the same. My conclusion is that this collection is simply not as photogenic but by my own experience with the steel one it's something else in person!

I love the grey dial, and it’s nice to see straps on they Odysseus. The problem is, literally my only major issue with the first Odysseus was the way the endlinks imperfectly fit with the lugs. Switching to a Strap should have fixed that, but instead they kept the only part about the bracelet I didn’t like. If they hadn’t bothered with using a proprietary strap, and had instead used a standard strap design, I think it would have looked much nicer. It also would have looked more like a Lange, because literally every other Lange model is on a standard leather strap.

I understand the reason why the straps can not be switched...(which not means, that I think that it's a smart decision) So from my point of view, it's just very sad. The second link on the steel bracelet still look's like a last minute design solution to me. Just didn't fit the shape from the lugs very well. @@WatchAdvisor The watch itself is a beautiful piece, and rightfully so; stands out in the A. Lange & Söhne catalog. In terms of the straps, I feel like as that price point; esp considering the likes of AP - they often tend to include an extra strap. Hence, having both as a package would've been a delight. I like the sporty look of the rubber, however choice being as it is; I'd opt for the Leather strap. I think what's lacking is the focus on the "Quick Change" strap abilities that we're starting to see in other watch brands, specifically the Cartier Santos and the likes. The unique design of the links, does make after-market strap options rather limited. As someone who enjoys changing straps and playing around with different materials; I think that's a missed opportunity on the Odysseus. Kind Regards.

The Odysseus is ok, its a 100 times better than the Audemars Piglet Code 11:59... The bracelet is nice but it is too wide, so wide it makes the watch look like a bangle, its not a good look. The leather and rubber strap options are great, the watch is very nice, but the width of that bracelet at the lug end is a show stopper.

A. LANGE & SÖHNE just dropped some diamonds here. I love the updated Zeitwerk. The minute repeater is always a highlight. The blue tone edition looks excellent. I am even more impressed with the updated Odysseus. While it's name is still a pain I really love the gray color with that perfectly integrated straps. The prestine quality of the actual watch has never been questioned. Now with the updated straps it's a true contender for the Royal Oak and the Nautilus. The only thing I don't like about the new Odysseus is that the straps are not interchangable. What's wrong with getting the steel version with a strap? I think Lange should be a bit more open and get over themselves here.

Wilhelm gave a clear answer to your question in the video... For A. Lange & Söhne every case-material has its own codes. The steel version was conceived to be a watch with a steel bracelet and not one with a rubber our leather strap... For me that is a stringent product policy...

Hmmm... this is a bit troubling. I had hoped putting it on a leather strap would save the watch. But this Daytona-esque bracelet integration with faux links between the lugs really doesn't work for me. Maybe if they removed the lugs completely... idk. Controversy is good with watches that push boundaries, but almost unanimous uneasiness with a fairly conservative design might not be the kind of controversy you're looking for. It still looks unfinished to me.

I'm still waiting for a blue dial steel version with matching crocodile and rubber straps. And Vacheron plainly differ when it comes to offering their customers value with a choice of straps with the Overseas. But deliberately making the new straps incompatible with the bracelet seems like adding insult to injury. I'm sure many of those who bought or ordered the original Odysseus were tolerating the bracelet on the assumption they could soon replace it with a strap. Apparently not.

If Vacheron Constantine’s new Overseas QP release showed us anything, it’s that a blue dial looks awesome in rose gold.

@@fintanusa Journe has established a weird cult of personality and is slowly becoming the hottest commodity in collecting. Patek with their family company story and history has an impeccable reputation amongst collectors. Richemont, on the other hand, is known for parts bin sharing across brands and cheaping out. (Lange Odysseus bracelet and clasp powered by IWC, cough, cough - I have the same bracelet on my IWC Mark XVII, even if not that beautifully polished) and let's remind ourselves of cheap Vacheron watches of the Fiftysix line with non-Geneva seal Richemont of the shelf ValFleurier movements that are also found in Cartier, etc. I have dozens of other examples. Example: Lange Perpetual Calendars go for less than half retail (90000$ and on some auctions, Lange Perpetuals went for below 40000.) That's not healthy in the long term. Collectors need trust in certain value stability.

I assume I've correctly understood that if you initially buy the leather strapped version you can't buy a rubber strap to put on it when you fancy wearing it on your yacht? I can't get my head round the idea claimed by the CEO that people that buy this level of watch 'know what they want' and won't want to swap between the two strap materials/looks. You can change in-between the leather and rubber strap on the new white gold version, but you can not change these straps with the bracelet of the steel version...

I think the design of the watch is completely transformed by the rubber and leather strap. The gray dial is spectacular!! One question, why not offer these additional straps on the steel case in blue or gray. That would have been much appreciated by Lange lovers. Of which I am one.

The steel watch was conceived to be a watch with a steel bracelet. So changes to straps are not officially planed. I am sure tough that there will be possibilities to also wear the steel version with a strap. Maybe some non-OEM-manufacturers will offer solutions...

WatchAdvisor I made my comment before I watched the whole video. I understand more now the way he approaches the designs. He seemed to me to insinuate that he leaves people wanting for a little more. He made the comment, “we don’t offer a black dial with every model.” I found that interesting. Almost like he was saying, we knew that people would want these options on the steel model. But, we are offering the watch this way because we are confident that the demand will outstrip the supply. He didn’t say it as crass as that. But, in his understated way, I think that’s what he meant. Maybe that perspective is what distinguishes a true luxury brand from the rest of the pack?

I really wanted the steel Odysseus. But I was told by the boutique that I either have to spend 30K on another watch or have a track record of having spent 100K on other Lange models. Is this Lange’s global policy or just in my country. Irrespective, Lange is bordering on an illegal practice of bundling. That does not sound like Lange, one of the most respected watch brands in the world.

I could not believe when I heard it. I confirmed and reconfirmed. This shop is run by the boutique in my country. When I questioned the legality with the manager who works for Lange, he even said he confirmed with the company lawyer. Earlier in January, I was offered an SS Odysseus by an AD, which I immediately confirmed, but the offer was quickly withdrawn because of this new “policy” by Lange. Neither the AD nor I was happy. This practice is unlike Lange and must be stopped immediately. It destroys the brand value.

Why should they? You can interchange the leather and rubber strap, but you can not exchange the metal strap... Why? It is an own design, as Wilhelm clearly explains in the video.

I went to my preferred watch dealer, who is an authorised A. Lange & Söhne reseller, but was told they are not allowed to stock, or even order, this model in any version at all. So I called the official boutique, and was told you can come in and apply to buy one, but we have to date, not allowed any new potential client to buy one. Not one single person, they said. So basically, they are saying they don’t want my business. This is despite being a brand that loses significant value after purchase. It will be interesting to see how well they do this this rather arrogant and unpleasant approach. I was seriously unimpressed, to say the least.

This watch is better looking than the steel one. I hope that they change the dial of the steel one to look like this. I think that decision not to allow changing of bracelet/straps is fundamentally incorrect. Other brands are allowing this and some of them even give you extra straps when you purchase their watch in similar price range (Vacheron). I would wear this watch, but there is something missing that was hard for me to point my finger at. After some thinking, I think I found out what makes it most "problematic" for me. True, this watch is very "Lange" like, but I think there is one "Lange characteristic" that should have been ditched, because the watch is supposed to have a different "purpose". The bezel should not be so rounded. I realized (and someone may correct me) that I don't know of a single sport watch that would have rounded bezel like this. They all have at least some flat lines and flat surfaces. I really can't think of a single watch to break this rule.

I've yet to see the Odysseus in person, but have suspected what he says is true, that, in person would be a unique experience, and I bet the bracelet would look great. However, that leather strap with the two cut-outs just looks hideous to me and the rubber not much better. I think seeing those in person would make me like them even less! You're locked in to straps made by ALS and can't change them to your preference. It's disappointing that they're devoting so much of their limited time and resources to yield such uninspiring results.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the straps will eventually be available on the steel model, or at least available to by seperately. I’d wager the reason this new model isn’t being launched with a bracelet is simply because it’s in white gold, and a full gold bracelet would have a massive impact on the price. We saw a similar thing when VC introduced the current Overseas. The steel models came with a bracelet, leather strap and rubber, whereas the gold model was only available with the leather and rubber, because including a full 18K bracelet would have doubled the price. Even now the only Overseas available with a full gold bracelet is the Ultra-thin QP, largely because the watch is already expensive enough that adding the bracelet only adds about 20% (although even then, they still offer no-bracelet and bracelet models).

I might be in the minority here, but another failure from Lange. now not just the bracelet/ strap is ugly the dial follows. the only thing nice in this "family' is the movement. The decimal repeater is nice but at 44mm, way to big. Patek can stay on the podium without nobody being able to challenge them.Since Richemont took over this brands ( Lange, Vacheron, Panerai) they're all a disaster...

I understand the reason why the straps can not be switched...(which not means, that I think that it's a smart decision) So from my point of view, it's just very sad. The second link on the steel bracelet still look's like a last minute design solution to me. Just didn't fit the shape from the lugs very well. On the other hand, the new rubber strap is looking very nice and on the steel watch would be stunning. So unfortunately my money goes to: VC Overseas... Tut mir leid, A. Lange und Söhne 🙈
