The scene when the Black woman threw the ball was to note that the league was segregated. There were two women who played in the Negro League. I met one of them, Mamie "Peanut" Johnson, at the Negro League Shop in MD years ago.

I see so many people commenting on reactions to A League of Their Own saying that Dottie dropped the ball on purpose. I've always disagreed so I'm glad to see Geena feels the same! Dottie made a point of telling Ellen Sue to throw high, fast balls because Kit had a history of missing them. She was definitely trying to help the Peaches win. Kit just had something to prove and all that fire built up in her, so she massacred that ball and then tackled Dottie so hard that she dropped the ball. She wanted that win!

She clearly dropped the ball on purpose. They showed TWO scenes to support this. 1) She held on to the ball when a larger woman ran her down. 2) She witnessed how Kitt was falling apart in the dugout. That was the purpose for showing those scenes. It doesn't take from her character at all. My sister would come before my team any day, especially knowing she's always felt like nothing. They actually show THREE scenes.....when Dottie tells her grandson to give his little brother a chance sometimes. She dropped the ball on purpose.

I'm a makeup artist by profession, but I'm so glad they did not use old age makeup on Madonna and Gene Davis and everybody. I'm glad that they cast older actresses for the reunion scenes. Old age makeup is one of THE most difficult things to do really well and believably- and with that number of actresses who would need it, and the budget of this film, it would probably have not been as good as it could have been, and it would pull you right out of the movie- the feeling of actual time having passed, how much people change with age.. The actresses they did cast were SO spot-on perfect! The casting director should have won an award just for that. You could immediately tell who was who. Obviously, they gave us clues in the script as well, but everybody looked believable. Dottie standing next to her younger-self photograph: there is no doubt that that young woman grew into that older woman. They really did a tremendous job with that casting!!

The guy dancing wirh Madonna was Eddie Mekka. He played Carmine (aka the Big Ragoo) on Laverne and Shirley. He was an excellent Singer and Dancer. One of Baseball Stadium Announcers calling the game was David Lander who played Squiggy on Laverne and Shirley. The Baseball Scout was played by Jon Lovitz (from Saturday Night Live). Many of his insults and funny comments weren't in the script and were adlibs by Lovitz himself. Jimmy Duggan (Tom Hank's character) was based on the Real Manager of the Rockford Peaches former Star Player Jimmy Foxx. Kit (Lori Petty) has a Cult following as the title character in the movie Tank Girl. The horrible bruise on the player's leg was real and took over a year to heal.

Dotti dropped the ball on purpose. They made a point to show Dotti hold on to the ball during several run ins throughout the movie so we would know that when she finally did let the ball go it was on purpose. IMO anyway.

Dottie dropped that ball on purpose, babies. She was the best in the league. The film made a point to show her skill...that she could catch and hold nearly any pitch, like when she fell into the dugout and came up holding the ball. The hit she took from Kitt was nothing for Dottie, she simply just decided to let her sister win in the end. Great reaction to one of my favorite movies!

@@groujo1she wouldn't have dropped that ball on purpose. If she does then that just nullifies all that Kit did to win. Kit earned it by finally giving it all she had instead of whining.

While it’s obviously left for the viewer to decide, I’m in the Dottie-dropped-the-ball-on-purpose camp. They open the movie with her effectively telling her elder grandson to take it easy on his little brother. And they make a point of showing Dottie holding on after a collision at the plate. I think Dottie knew it meant far more to her sister than it did to her, so she let her win in a way that wouldn’t undermine her sister’s accomplishment.
@groujo1
@groujo1 10 ай бұрын
@@MotoNomad350 Agreed: it fits with the themes, and Dottie does seem to wish she had given Kit more room to flourish. But it doesn't fit with Dottie's , imho. She was a real ballplayer who respected the game and wanted to win. She drove hundreds of miles to return to the final game, and she told Betty to pitch Kit high. And you can see it on her face while Kit is running the bases: she's not rooting Kit on. So if she decided to drop the ball intentionally, it was at the very last second. And I'd say if that was the intention of the story to have that be the crucial choice, it's filmed strangely. They could have shown Dottie smiling while doing it or something. I think they chose not to do that because it would feel condescending, rather than loving. And that's exactly why I don't choose not to interpret it that way.
@zammmerjammer
@zammmerjammer 10 ай бұрын
The number of people who seem to think that being good at something means that no one can ever win against you forever is ridiculous. Do you *seriously* think the story being told is that Dottie betrays her teammates, lets Kit win out of pity, and that Kit is deluded and achieves nothing? *Seriously?* What a dreadful ending, and one wholly inconsistent with the ENTIRE rest of the story. People, come ON.

This is a great movie. It’s one you can watch repeatedly throughout the years. The only thing that gets to me about it is how Kit never really gets her comeuppance. It’s so unsatisfying! She basically gets rewarded in the end for being a spiteful, self absorbed, jealous, inconsiderate, tantrum throwing shrew. I hate it! There weren’t any consequences for her disgusting/hateful behavior. At no point did she ever show any love or compassion towards her own sister and the real problems she was going through. Kit didn’t deserve to win and it ruined the end of the movie for me.

OK just finished it. I really relate to it feeling nostalgic - it's a story that, despite not happening to us personally, is still deeply relevant to many of us. Some of that is in the power of the incredible storytelling of this movie, and some because it's telling the real stories of real people and we can't escape the ways in which history continues to impact us all in a variety of ways we struggle to describe, even as it feels vital that we find some way to communicate what we feel inside so that we feel less alone. Sigh, it's after midnight and I worry I'm rambling. I appreciate you sharing your time with us. I love this film and really enjoyed y'all's reaction to it. The father didn’t treat Dottie better. Kitt was just jealous because Dottie was great at everything and people recognized it and Dottie cast a long shadow, so Kitt was always in it. And Dottie loved her sister more than baseball, which is why she dropped that ball at home plate on purpose to make Kitt the hero and lift her up. The director of this movie made it a point to show Dottie being run into at home plate on two previous occasions by two women bigger and stronger than Kitt and not dropping the ball.
@zammmerjammer
@zammmerjammer 2 ай бұрын
So Dottie is a traitor who came al the way back to play the World Series JUST to betray her teammates and give Kit a false win that Kit is too dumb to realize is not real? *That's a terrible story.* Dottie never once showed that she is someone who would let somebody win just to make them feel better. Dottie wants to win just as much as Kit does. We see that over and over again. She tells Ellen Sue about Kit's weakness with high fastballs just to LIE AND THROW THE GAME in the final moment? WTF? The ending is KIT WINS FAIR AND SQUARE. THAT'S why Dottie is so happy for her and proud of her. The reason it was shown on previous occasions with Dottie being run into on home plate and holding onto the ball is because THIS TIME she didn't! Do you seriously think just because someone is good at a sport that means they are 100% good 100% of the time? I genuinely don't even know how this is debatable. "Dottie is a liar and Kit is deluded" is the happy ending in your mind???

Recently, I passed on a reaction to this film, thinking, "Next time I'm in the mood for a reaction to A League of Their Own, I can always search for that flickaroo and pick whichever channel's reacting to it." Then it showed up on your channel, and I said "HOORAY, I'm down!" (Along with You, Me, & the Movies and Andelain, your reaction channel ranks at the tippity top for me! Your reactions are always fantastic!) Also: "Why do you gotta' be so good?" is the wrong question. Kit, addlepated from living in her sister's shadow, is the embodiment of sport: striving her hardest, past reason, with a chip on her shoulder and everything to prove. Dottie, the Michael Jordan of her sport, has nothing to prove. She's amazingly talented and a class act all the way, a wonderful human being. To me, the question Kit needs to be asking *herself* is, "How good can *I* be -- and when am I ever going to just be happy for my sister and congratulate her on being such a badass?"

Baseball and softball are played by the same rules, but softball uses a larger ball that hurts less when you get hit with it. It's common for girls and casual players (for example, teams from churches or businesses just looking to play recreationally, not aspiring athletes) to play softball as opposed to baseball. Dottie and Kit were playing softball in the beginning for the for the team from the dairy their parents own.

We've already done it once, back then: surely today there would be a market for this! The success of women's basketball and soccer must surely prove that women's sports are every bit as entertaining as men's sports. People would pay for those tickets. But I'm no expert; I'm no rich mover and shaker in the world of sports leagues. What do I know? Here's hoping for a women's baseball league, sooner than later, amiright?

75 dollars a week is the equivalent of making about $1,400 a week these days. So, about 70k a year, give or take. Pretty good money all in all. For comparison, Lou Gehrig was the highest paid star in the late 30’s and he was pulling in about it 35k a year (or roughly 700k these days).

The huge bruise on the woman's thigh isn't make up at all it was a real injury. So painful. Tom Hanks said it was the most fun he ever had making a movie as he got to eat what he wanted, drink beer,watch, play baseball in small towns with a great cast of people and all their families.

All of the actresses in the movie really had to already have proven baseball/softball experience. Apparently a lot of actresses wanted to be in this movie and tried out for it but skill was also a necessity to be in this film.

During World War 2. While the men went off to War. Including the pro baseball players. Women went to work in the factories and played professional baseball in the women's league. Back then it was a different time . Women didn't go off to War and fight in combat. Today it's different. Back then Women were homemakers while men worked and was the primary source of income. This movie is based on a true story. I am a big fan of your reactions. Have a great day!

“I’m having nostalgia as if I use to be a baseball player. I’ve never played baseball in my whole life.” You just made me crack up laughing when you said that. Another great reaction. I seriously love you two. You are awesome and I hope you have all the success and happiness in the world. I truly enjoy watching you two reacting to some of my favorite movies and I find myself with a huge smile on my face without even realizing it. I’m so happy I came across your channel awhile back. The relationship between Tom Hanks and Geen Davis is so great because they didn't try to make it some kind of love triangle - it's strictly platonic and he has respect for her as a player and as a person.

That bruise on Alice’s thigh was real, she got it while filming and so they included in the movie. Just another reason why they shouldn’t have worn skirts as a baseball uniform 🙄

Good story, but the only things in there that actually happened were that the players did go to charm school, and that they wore those awful uniforms. But women's baseball was popular from the very first. They were never in danger of being shut down, and the league lasted through the 1953 season. There were more and more major-league games on television, and for awhile, small-town teams suffered. The bruise on a player's hip that looked so horrible wasn't makeup. That was real. The actress said it took a year to heal completely.

I don’t think Dottie would ever lose on purpose. Kit just clocked her. Also, Dottie also hurt herself catching the ball in the dugout so she wasn’t 100%

Dotty did drop the ball on purpose so Kit could get her moment to shine. My favorite part about this story is Marla's dad's love and support for her. It was sweet.
@zammmerjammer
@zammmerjammer 10 ай бұрын
OF COURSE she didn't drop the ball on purpose. NOTHING about Dottie's character throughout the entire movie supports that idea. She at no point is the type to let anyone win to make them feel better. ALSO, that is the WORST possible ending -- it means Dottie is a liar who betrays her teammates and Kit is a deluded phony. "Good thing your sister bailed you out, Kit" from the beginning is the SAME at the end? Makes no sense. Dottie is happy for Kit at the end because SHE WON fair and square. She couldn't hit the high fastballs and couldn't lay off them, but by the end SHE DID and SHE WON. I can't believe this is even a question.
