I have absolutely come to hate watching other soapers that start with their recipes already mixed and weighed or rambling off percentages and not truly understanding what they are talking about or how they got to where they are at. So when you use unsaponifiables like Shea butter does that mean the lye cannot saponify completely and there will be free NaOH floating around looking for a partner but there are none for it. Therefore unreacted NaOH will stay in the finished cured soap? Or does the lye calculator or sap value account for that possibility and the NaOH is 100% saponified with extra oils in the finished soap bar or The lye can never utilize the Shea or what ever and all of it will always be a superfat. Thank you. Excellent video.

Do you have anything about essential oil’s in your book as far as how to blend a fragrance?
@iwannaapple71906 жыл бұрын
You have alot of good information there. Congratulations in putting all that together. I have a couple of observations and what I view as discrepancies and they just might be typos. Firstly, you say oils have a sap value and they are not interchangeable. I am sure many are not interchangeable but I would assume that some are when they have they same value. For instance, Grapeseed and Olive pomice have the same value of .133. That means it takes .133 (whatever measurement) of lye to saponify .133 ( of whatever oil with same value). Therefore they can be interchangeable I presume. You also say that lye needs the same weight in water to dissolve correctly. I imagine that could be considered a lye/water ratio. If it needs its same weight that would mean a 50/50 ratio and I imagine that is the absolute minimum value. It is like a flat tire. You can't go any lower then zero air pressure. I can add all the air I want to but I can't go any lower then zero. So zero for a tire is the absolute minimum and a 50/50 lye water ratio for soap is as low as you can go but you can add all the water you want to. So, the word "Discount" to me, is actually an anomaly when it actually means that you are adding water and not discounting. (This is not directed towards you but to the usage of the word by many soap makers) And speaking of water, I would imagine water is used to carry the lye. It is the highway of soaping. If water is crucial to lye then why not calculate the water amount from the lye amount. I could easily make a mistake when making a recipe and say I want %20 water times my oils which just might not be enough water to carry the lye. Wouldn't it be really easy to accidentally make a 40/60 water/lye ratio doing it that way? I don't know I have never thought about it that way. It seems to me if I want 1.5x more water then lye I would just multiply lye x 1.5 and that would undoubtedly give me a 60/40 water/lye ratio. To make that last point shorter, shouldn't water be related to the lye and not to the oils for mistake purposes? One more thing I'd like to address and I completely don't understand. But first some background observations. I have accidentally read my spreadsheet wrong before and have accidentally used much less lye then I was supposed to. I pretty much basically superfatted at 75% (I premix 50/50 and add water later). Soap is usable but is definitly not enjoyable, NOT creamy or bubbly. I actually just use it in the kitchen or to get grease off (maybe)! My point here is this. Superfatted soap, the part that is superfatted, is lame! Literally. No matter the amount it does not act like soap. You do not recognize it as that because their is 95% of actual soap surrounding that 5% lame soap! That lame soap does not moisturize or anything. It pretty much just gives me wishful thinking because that oil never changed its cell structure to soap. Its half in limbo. It is fear of a lower ratio that still persists from the time when scales were not as accurate as today and you feel that you will get dry or burned skin. I would have to say that that would only be the case if a high percentage of hard oils are used when fast saponification occurs. You do no get fast saponification when softer oils are used. You state that yourself when you say you SF at 20% for coconut. Well that is definitly sound advice but I bring it up because it concurs with harder oils saponifying quicker as the culprit and not as a result of using a higher amount of lye. This also ties in to the fact that the more water you add the less soap (oil) you have in your bar. So, if your scales are accurate and you are good with your measurements and watch your hard oil percentages then you could very well have a moisturizing bar of soap that is all or mostly soap and not evaporating water. And lastly, most importantly, all your advice is good. I just bring these things up because this was very frustrating for me when I started and I can tell that these same things are in people's questions. They just dont know what to ask yet. I'm on a role, I am very glad I have not seen you specifying superfatting with this and superfatting with that. Because different oils saponify at different rates. Shey, actually saponifies faster then Olive. So if you SF with shay, your actually most likely superfatting with Olive because Olive actually resists saponification and takes longer. Oh yeah, nice work. You make me want to make soap again. Thank you for the video and for the book.

I make soap mainly with coconut and olive oils and I add a special healing cream as well. the cream is made with aqueous cream plus essential oils and I'm not sure exactly what else. The problem is as soon as I add it to my oils it doesn't mix with the oils cause it's water based. Nowhere on the soap calc can I find aqueous cream to work out how much lye to add. Mostly the soap sets too fast. Do you know where i can find the saponification value of aqueous cream. Than you Regards deborah

How do you figure out the super fat percentage for the soap in the percentages of lye concentration...what is the lye discount .
@TinaMoenck6 жыл бұрын
You get to set your superfat, and generally a good superfat for cold and hot process soap is 5-8%. Milk soaps have extra fat so you can do a 3% superfat. A 100% coconut oil soap can tolerate a higher superfat of 20% without going rancid and it's necessary with that soap otherwise it's way too drying. Liquid soap on the other hand has to be done with a 0% superfat to get a clear soap.
@TinaMoenck6 жыл бұрын
I saw your other question about SAP values. Each oil has a different SAP number, and that means how much lye it needs to turn into soap. It's much easier to use a lye calculator, because they have all the SAP numbers built in. Those SAP numbers are not exact and can vary slightly from supplier to supplier and even at different times of the year, so this is another reason we use a superfat as a buffer. The superfat helps us to not have a lye heavy soap.

Thank you very kindly Tina for clarifying a couple of details I was needing to understand ) ♡ to move forward in my soaping hobby. I also think it would be a good idea to order your handbook book on soaping for extra details on oils...And other aspects of safely creating gently cleansing soaps that will enhance my hand made soaping adventure. I shall do that in a week. I guess I do have a question for you as yet on superfatting. I personally am not as keen on sents perhaps as the average person, and I used to have a lot of reactions to perfumes, or colognes. I guess that has left me gun shy? That said, I have used some scents in some of my soaps thst my daughters have generously given me to add to my recipes. Some soap videos have offered a fairly simple and fun looking recipe and say add your essential oil at trace, but they imply that this is their superfat? Can that be part, or all of the sf in a recipe or am I completely off the beaten track? Ive heard soap makers say add an ounce or so of organic extra virgin olive oil and organic virgin coconut oil at this point (trace for CP, AND when temperature has dropped down near to complete and pouring in the mould, in HP. Is that ok to add it seems so, if your oil, water and sodium hydroxide is calculated to zero? Bear in mind I am a grandmother of 4 delightful, bright minds who along with their parents want to use my bars....and who've seen me through convalescence, and this has helped give me a reason to tip toe out of my bed..? My husband has gone from mortified at me even thinking of soaping to he thinks my soaps are wholesome and attractive, (yeah! )♡ thank you for taking time to share your experience and in depth knowledge of this artful craft with me...and others on this path.l BTW if this is too long I do not mind if you dicard my comment! merci bouquet

+Patty Poehls I make a few different plain soaps with no essential oils or anything else added. I sometimes will do herbal infusions for those plain soaps too for sensitive skin. An essential oil is the volatile oil that is usually steam distilled from plants, it is a very concentrated form of all the great properties in the plant. A fragrance oil is synthetic and made in a lab to mimic scents. I calculate my recipe with my superfat, and then add my essential oils at trace for cp,and after the cook in hp. I don't consider my essential oils my superfat, since they are completely different compounds then oils like olive and coconut.

Tina, I understand superfat in CP and how it appears in soapcalc, but am confused about how to use soapcalc for an HP recipe. Since I use yogurt and butters after the cook, should my recipe in soapcalc reflect a 0% superfat? If not and I should include a percentage in the calculator, how do I determine the actual measurement of my supefat products to add?
@TinaMoenck5 жыл бұрын
There are several ways to do superfat. I prefer putting it into the calculator and just setting oils from the recipe aside to add as superfat. It's never going to be exact. But if you add a high fat yogurt you can drop the superfat to 3% in the calculator. You can also try a couple small batches with it done different ways and see what you prefer.

You add the lye to distilled water and stir to let it dissolve. After the temperatures are where you need them for the lye water and oils you slowly add the lye water to the oils. I have a whole beginner series that starts with lye safety and shows the whole soap making process step by step... If you click on my playlists it's there. Unless it's a laundry soap I recommend a Superfat. When you use a lye calculator just put in what Superfat you'd like such as 5%. This is a lye discount to create excess oil in the soap to act as a buffer and help the soap be more mild.

Margarita Henriquez You can still calculate your recipe with 5% Superfat and then just reserve some oil to add at trace. In cp though adding it at trace doesn't guarantee that will be the oil left unsaponified because the lye is still active.

I'd do about 5% of each butter. coconut oil can be around 20%, palm oil can be around 10-15%, castor oil no more than 5%, sweet almond oil can be 5-10%, olive oil can make up the rest. If you want more time to work with the soap use more liquid oil, and soap colder.

@iwannaapple71905 жыл бұрын
I don't know if you found your answer yet but this is how you get your concentration: waterAmt/(waterAmt + lyeAmt) = % lyeAmt/(waterAmt + lyeAmt) = % If that is not what you were asking and I can help you. And, most importantly, 76% is not necessarily how it is "supposed to be". It is how YOU want it to be. You can always add whatever amount of extra water that you want you just can never go below 50% water. Everything after 50% water is up to you. To get the correct water amount all you have to do is lyeAmt x 1= waterAmt, lyeAmt x 1.1= waterAmt, lyeAmt x 1.2= waterAmt, lyeAmt x 1.5= waterAmt, lyeAmt x 2= waterAmt. See where I am going here?

When I add essential oils at trace, does this affect the soaponification process? Will this mean that the soap can get soggy because of this addition? Thank you so much in advance for your help?
@angelawambo30748 жыл бұрын
Hi. When showing the sap values they look to be listed as like .90-.140 or the like per an oil. So how do you get so specific when you calculate byhand saying caster is a specific number times 2? Hope that makes sense. Lol. Thank.you!
@TinaMoenck8 жыл бұрын
The SAP chart has all the math done for us which is awesome. the second and third columns show the exact amount of NaOH and KOH needed to saponify each oz of each oil. So if you are making bar soaps make sure to look at the sodium hydroxide column.

My problem is figuring out how much lye and water to make a recipe. I am having a hard time figuring out how to even begin my own recipe. I have bought so many books and no help. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Lisa Lampros Have you tried just running through an online recipe through the Brambleberry lye calculator. There is a lot to creating recipes, I have an online course that goes over everything, but it's more advanced information. I also have a whole beginner soap making series that I'm working on. I have about half of the videos uploaded, and there will be 20 total.

WOW I AM HAPPY I FOUND YOUR CHANNEL I WAS CONFUSED ABOUT THIS SUPER FAT UNTIL I WATCHED YOUR VIDEO THANK YOU SO MUCH, MY QUESTION IS IF I ADDED THE 5% FROM BEGINNING OF MY SOAP CALC RECIPE SO I DON'T HAVE TO ADD ANY EXTRA OIL TO SUPERFAT AT END OF MY HOT PROCESS RIGHT?? AND ALSO WHERE CAN I GET YOUR EBOOK PLEASE.THANK YOU I REALLY APPRECIATE PLUS YOU REALLY NEED TO BE A TEACHER .I AM A NEW SUBBIE

FoletTV Health & Beauty Tips Hi Thank you! I'm also working on a beginner soap making series on my channel. 15 videos are up, and I have 5 more to finish and upload. Yes, if you calculate your recipe with a 5% superfat, you don't need to add any more oil. However, you can set that 5% aside from, and add it after the cook if you want. Any extra oil added will increase your superfat. Here is the link to my ebook. gum.co/EeAJQ Print Copy is available on demand at www.lulu.com/spotlight/tinamoenck

The Saponification values are all listed in the SAP chart. There's some crazy math to figure out the SAP numbers, so the chart has it all figured out.

Hi, in the calculations where you’re trying to find the super fat did you multiply 8.574 by 5% because that’s your desired amount for the soap, or did you come about this percentage a different way?
@iwannaapple71905 жыл бұрын
I actually didn't watch the video and in the 5 months since you asked this you might even have your answer. Dunno, but if 8.574 was the lye amount in the video then, yes, (1 - .05) * 8.574 = 8.1453

Hi Tina thank you for your awesome tutorial..I was wondering if 5% of superfast is 5grams for every 100grams of total weight, sorry i'm still a little confused?..Thanks again
@TinaMoenck8 жыл бұрын
pat bortolin it's a 5% lye discount. So whatever your total amount of lye is needed you are subtracting 5% of that to give you excess oil... which is your superfat. Does that help?

Yes Tina it does, thanks for getting back to me so fast, I was just trying to formulate my first ever batch of soap and sometimes start to overthink :)

Very clear but I am confused about the superfat when using shea butter and Palm oil, should I put the shea at trace? And very little amount? Are those ones the only with unsaponifiables? I am beginer and very confused after few lousy courses 😔 now just knew about unsaponifiables.... is there a digital versión of your book and how much? Thank you
@TinaMoenck5 жыл бұрын
There are many oils and butters with unsaponifiables. We use the superfat as a buffer. Fatty acids can differ slightly from source to source in the same oil or butter. We don't know exactly how much excess oil will end up in the final product. Unrefined Shea butter is higher in unsaponifiables than refined Shea butter. In cold process soap making it doesn't matter if you add oils at trace or not, it'll still come into contact with the lye. Does that help?

So I mix all my oils and then pour some off... and add after I bring to trace? I am so lost. I usually am fast at learning thing but this soap stuff is not a game.
@TinaMoenck5 жыл бұрын
It does take time to get a handle on making soap. With CP you don't have to add superfat at trace, it won't make a difference because the lye is still active. You can do it however you prefer.

What is good to use for a super fat and do you also super fat cold process soap
@TinaMoenck7 жыл бұрын
kim nguyen Superfat is a lye discount so you have excess oil in your soap. I normally use a 5% superfat in cold process and hot process soap. It helps condition the skin by helping it retain moisture.

hi there Please help: I am using 7.100 kg tallow in my recipe, Do i still work out my fat, 7.100 X .141 = lye 1.001 Is there is different formula for Lye and a different for Tallow or Sheep?. Can I use tallow and lard and sheep in the same batch?
@TinaMoenck5 жыл бұрын
I highly recommend using a lye calculator. There will be some differences in the fatty acid profiles, but there is no way to know exactly how much lye you need unless you test the oils. One reason why we superfat is to cover those slight differences.

Hi, Tina thanks for your information. It is very helpful video to me. I would like to prepare this liquid soap by using coconut oil( Which is cheaply available in our area). Could you please give the the details that how much KOH, water and Coconut oil required for 1 liter. With many thanks, Radha Krishna
@TinaMoenck9 жыл бұрын
Hi! Have you watched my liquid soap video? I use Brambleberry's lye calculator for my liquid soaps and use their KOH. The units are in grams or ounces. Coconut oil cooks a lot differently in liquid soap. It traces fast and gets hard, and is very hard to stir. But it's a great soap.
