1:47 The word defenestration comes from the Latin fenestra. (Where the German Fenster comes from.) Gotta keep our etymology in order. ;)
@augustin56115 жыл бұрын
Yep, and the english use comes directly from french where window is write fenêtre, and "fenestre" in old french.
@AMetalPotato4 жыл бұрын
well, and the Latin word comes from the Greek "phainein" (or mabye it's an Etruscan loan word), and then from Indo-European and so on. The point is that the word was made for that event using a German word, not a Latin word.
@Warpwaffel4 жыл бұрын
@@AMetalPotato Or rather the Latin fenestra was used for the international/fancy version and the German Fenster was used for the German version which is Fenstersturz. It was the 17th century, nobody was using German for fancy talk if they could help it. On the other hand, the word defenestration seems a bit improvised by someone not quite so well versed in Latin. Hmmm.

@@AMetalPotato then it would be defensteration not defenestration... :)
@AMetalPotato4 жыл бұрын
@@steefant that's not how neologisms work, usually the derived work "recovers" a previous pronunciation and/or spelling, (usually from what was perceived as "the original" -back then-, or from an "elevated" or "classic" language or dialect -latin, greek, old germanic, etc-).

First of all, hope you guys feel better, wish you quick recovery. Second, I really like how Indy always finds time to speak about wars on a very personal level. About how much death and terror is behind political decisions, tactics and glory. It's easier in the case of WW1 and WW2 because we have more first hand sources, but I really appreciate it wasn't forgotten even regarding a war 400 years ago. About the songs of Carolus Rex album, I've always felt some of them sounds better in English and others in Swedish. In which language was the album written first? It's a pity I can't understand Swedish lyrics, it would be surely interesting to compare them with the English ones. And guy with the footage out there, bring it back!

When I heard the song was about Catholics vs Protestants, it kind struck me. I am Catholic and my best friend is Protestant. We have done research on each other’s beliefs and even attended each other’s church services. We have some differing beliefs but we respect each other. It isn’t even a tense point. Our friendship is too strong to let petty differences get between us. We have been there for each and helped each other through difficult times. I just get a weird feeling when I think that history has been full of bloodshed in part due to the differences between Catholics and Protestants. It makes me sad that the potential friendship and alliance between the two groups was squandered trying to kill each other over disagreements that ultimately don’t really matter. However, our friendship makes me hopeful for a future day where we can all get over our differences, not just Catholics and Protestants but everyone, and be united in peace and compassion for each other

The 30 years war in my opinion was one of the seminal struggles of the early modern era. It's one of the biggest and last religious wars in Europe and ended by consecrating the nation- state above princely politics. It was the bitter twilight of one age and the bright beginning of the modern age. The last knights marched into this war but from the rear end of it came out true modern military tactics, new framework of religious tolerance and nation-states. And most horrifically, it was one of the worst age of atrocity in recent history, perhaps matched only by WW2 in Europe.

This Song as I have posted and several versions online maybe the single best retort to any who say sabaton Worships Violence and War. as it and more so the Swedish version is a sombre lament of the true first great war of europe. I have often read posts stating that it brings many to tears without any historical context as we all know the hell 4 or 6 years of war can be but three decades at the end of the medieval period everyone who would even listen to Sabaton knows that such a thing is almost beyond comprehension. The Song with historical background just from this video should never be taken as glorification but as a warning "It is good that War is so terrible, otherwise, we should grow too fond of it"- Robert E Lee

Notification squad reporting as ordered to... actually I haven't received the notification for this video. I'm here because someone posted the link to a fan group. Is this due to the car accident? Guys, i hope you recover soon. I can't wait to see you live in Budapest in January

Hey Indy, the picture of 2:12 is from the 1st defenestration 200 years earlier.

10:23 Wait that part of Bruno's backstory in We The Revolution has a historical precedent? I thought it was just something the devs made up to facilitate the story and use the dice game mechanics. Sure it happened to Bruno in what I think was the Austrian War of Succession, but it was still Prussian soldiers that made him gamble for if he got his arms cut off. It makes more sense that those specific soldiers remembered what their ancestors had done than coming up with it from thin air.

I have now watched this for the 4 time this. The 1st was on Patron Tuesday. I review little but here it is, Good introduction into the story, the show defines and follows, very well, a consistent theme, Fantastic Music, Beautiful story for an awful period told in the romantic style,, Indie's humor carries slow parts, the show has great artwork, the band story of losing the video is hilarious and sad in of itself. My vote is that this is your best History show to date.. In full disclosure, I love this song think this the best so far

Another great one! Only 2 things I'll say: 1) I think "defenestration" actually comes from "fenestra", which is latin for "window" and 2) That's a really nice sabre in the background!! Keep up the great work, folks! PS: For those unfamiliar with the 2nd Defestration Of Prague, go check the story out. It's amazing...
