One of my favorite books is a historical fiction story that takes place in this time period. "The Lion of the North, a tale of the times of Gustavus Adophus," by G. A. Henty. The main character is a young Scott that joins the Green Brigade of Gustavus in the 30 Years War. Henty wrote many Historical fiction books in the late 19th century for the boys of England. I love to read or listen to them. If you want a book that gives you the history of the war and give you a good story at the same time, then I would recommend that you read it.

I think one of the issues with the language barriers here in the United States is unlike Europe we are not directly exposed to so many different languages being we are clear on the other side of the world bordered by countries that speak primarily English and Spanish. Where as in Europe you have a ton of different countries and languages packed together so tightly making the need or want to learn a second or third language a bigger deal. I personally, being someone who lives in America, love to hear songs in other languages. I listen to for example Rammstein and love their music and songs even if it is in German. Just makes me look up the lyrics so I can start to understand the songs and even learn some basic German in the process

One of my favorite anecdotes about him was an Italian mercenary working in his army. He was paid to kill him. This man having no allegiance to Gustavus and on multiple occasions leveling his pistol at the king said he could not bring himself to kill such a man. Such was Gustavus' charisma and self-confidence. Thomas Roe said of him "I hope more of the King of Sweeden's own person than of all his country ... he is all and worth all" He also said, "He thinks the ship cannot sink that carries him". Such a level of self-confidence is infectious. It is no wonder his death at the Battle of Lutzen hit the Swedish military so hard.
