@alicesenz63743 жыл бұрын
@@jacobmaribello1726 Well for this scene the demographic they were likely trying to pander to was liberal women. However when women say they want to see more strong female characters on screen, they usually don't mean that they want a female character to point out that the women in the show are better in an awkward way, but instead want to see dynamic, well developed female characters that contribute to the plot just as much as the male characters so that lines like the one here either aren't necessary or don't seem as out of place if they're told. The demographic can change though depending on the character and scene. There are many token characters shoved in to different types of media. Characters whose only character trait is being of the oppressed group that they're a part of. Hollywood knows that standards are low among some demographics and expect praise for shoving in "progressive rhetoric" and minority characters even if they do so extremely poorly. I'm not against movies having characters that comment on racism, sexism, etc. I think it can be done extremely well and work with the plot and characters. This scene just isn't an example of that, it's an example of directors putting in an awkward scene and hoping for clout. Also, can I ask why you put my name in quotes? I mean you're right that this isnt my real name but who cares it's a youtube comment section. Also even if Hollywood is full of liberals, conservatives will probably still complain because they want to see movies that adhere to their values. Hollywood doesn't have to make them, but people always bitch about media that's life. You might as well argue that Arabs and poor people can't complain about media either since they also aren't dominant in Hollywood. I didn't bring up conservatives in my comment though and honestly didn't give their complaints much thought.

@Thisis Gettinboring I don't know which characters you're talking about, but the point is the vast majority of female characters were only there to support the male characters and it's always been like this. Not doing anything wouldn't have change anything obviously so I'm not sure what you're suggesting. It's not feminism's fault if some old white men misunderstood what the movement is about, and are trying hard to make their movie appeal to a demographic of people they personally don't really care for.
@pusheenqueen5193 жыл бұрын
@Thisis Gettinboring Emphasis on "few". And this "cultural necessity" is hardly done with any input from women. We say we want representation, get ignored, have half assed feminist themes/characters written by dudes cheapening the issue for money, and then we get the blame for this surge of crappy films made by men who only want to exploit feminism to line their own pockets and look "woke". 🙄
@pusheenqueen5193 жыл бұрын
@Thisis Gettinboring Yes, that's what we want. We want to tell our stories or at the very least have our input listened to when projects that center around women and our experiences and perspectives are being dived into. The problem is that sexism and misogyny in Hollywood is very much still alive, as it is in many industries.
@pusheenqueen5193 жыл бұрын
@Thisis Gettinboring when people stop putting band aids and hold assed solutions on the problem or stop trying to make a profit from exploiting feminism, it would help a lot. Until then, we'll just have to keep fighting to get our voices and stories heard for further progress.

The Queen of Thorns from Game of Thrones is a great example of a strong female character. An old woman past the beauty of youth, no big sword or rippling muscles, yet completely dominating those around her. Granted, she was a noble and had that advantage. But you got the impression she would have been an alpha wherever she went.

Yeah, I don't think it would have been cringe on its own if it was actually true. Definitely the context that makes it... honestly just confusing. Characters can be wrong too, flaws are great, but you can't even be opinionated about something that's just flat false. Either the women ALWAYS save the men or they don't (in which case it's everyone saving everyone). The truth is definitely the latter sooo... either they meant for her to be delusional or the more likely answer... writer got lazy.
@kellywilliams13323 жыл бұрын
@@Bootsii exactly. so many of the plot points in that movie felt lazy to me. the fact that they blamed charles' deception to Jean as the catalyst for her going all explosive...maybe it amplified what would already be an emotional event for her, i.e. being deceived by her father figure...but it was the phoenix power that made her response uncontrollable. that part was not Charles' fault.

Yes! When you need to emphasize that they're women... You aren't empowering women. If it's actually **genuinely** relevant to the plot or an actually good joke (for once), then sure, but other than that, stop trying to force the fact that a character is a woman. It just winds up being harmful in the end because all people think when there's a female lead or some shit is that it's just another dumb, awfully written "woke" movie and, again, it just fucks women and feminism over.

While the intent for empowerment is there, shit writing is still shit writing. Miyazaki’s a feminist, the guy who made those banger Ghibli films, but the difference in representation of their views on feminism is astronomical because of their values of representing the relationship between men and women. In this scene it’s a fight, women vs. men, and in order to be respected, the women have to win. Every woman in these movies just seem scared of the thought of being looked down on, because the writers are. They’re afraid of making a female character who isn’t respected, so they make them too strong while pushing their values on the watcher with straightforward, messy dialogue. In Miyazaki’s films the men and the women work together. It shows the strength of a woman and the gentleness of a man, all while never mentioning it straight up, just showing it through their actions, dialogue, and interesting character arcs. Because that’s good writing. If you are frustrated, angry, and full of bitterness, it’ll show up in your writing. Sorry for the ramble, it just seems like we’re in a pretty shoddy era of writing. I’m sure it’ll end soon but you can’t help but be disappointed.

@@WelloBello actually it's not. What is really happening is that people are conflating their hate towards the sequel movies and applying it to other things unrealistically. It happens all the time and I'm willing to bet it's a natural thing. Not just with movies, but with any and every topic. They can hate something so much, and rightfully so, but then veer off the path and start hating on things that aren't actually bad. "Somehow... Palpatine returned" is a pretty basic and realistic quote to say. If the plot is about Palpatine returning and the characters do not know how he returned, they would say exactly that. Now I'm a person that doesn't like the sequels just as much as anybody else. The only thing that I do (personal growth) is I hate on things in good faith.
