I like to think of these two rom hacks as a "progression", as if GameFreak actually made 'em. The actual Spaceworld 1997 Demo being "Stage 1". The early prototype beta. Finished just enough to be a playable teaser demo, but still highly unfinished and working off the Gen 1 engine. Super Gold 1997 being "Stage 2". GameFreak continued working off of the early teaser beta. Still clearly unfinished and still based on Gen 1, but now it's fully navigatable, and all the gyms and League work, along with NPCs and things working as intended. And Reforged being "Stage 3". The final stage that got released, where they finally turned Stage 2 into a full GBC game with updated graphics and updating the map here and there to look more interesting and 'finished'. Polishing up the sprites and tileset, polishing up the story and events, and making everything just more complete and ready for a retail release. Obviously the hacks aren't official, but I like thinking of 'em that way, in stages. Helps make them make sense if I add some sort of timeline to it. I'm kinda torn on which one I actually want to play and finish. Like, the idea of playing Super Gold, a version that resembles the demo a lot more, is interesting to me. But, Reforged is the version that WOULD have been had they actually finished the original version of the game instead of scrapping it and starting over. I can't make up my mind. Do I want a Gen 1-looking Demo-update, to get that original Demo feel? Or do I want a more complete and polished looking game that carries over a lot from the Demo, but updates it?

Thanks, that comment helped me a lot deciding in which order I want to play Super and Reforged. According to this video, they differ enough to be worth being played both individually rather than "just one of the two" but I couldn't decide for an order. Now I'd say: First "Super Gold", then "Gold Reforged" (according to your Stages 2 and 3). :)

I’ve always been a fan of Silver (the rival character) and seeing his personality so different here and him seeming to play a larger part in the story is really intriguing 😅 plus the little panda Pokémon is just adorable, and this version of Falkner is so cool. Can I use my old savefile for Super Gold and Reforged? Btw, I am too stupid to make Reforged to work. I gave up trying for 2 hours and completed my Pokedex.

Super Gold 97 runs on Gold Version instead of Crystal so the save files aren't compatible. The old Gold 97 saves might be compatible with Reforged since both run on Crystal Version, but you're probably better off starting a new save file.

Dang I've completely missed these. Excited to try them out. Found the 5.0 IPS patches but for the life of me can't figure out what game is supposed to be patched. Tried gold, silver, crystal. I feel like I'm overlooking somewhere on the forums where I'm sure it says what the base is. You mentioned gold 97 as the base to reforged, but I can't even find a ROM or IPS for that aside from the updated super gold 97. Any chance you know where I could look for the base to patch? You need Gold Version for Super Gold 97, and Crystal Version for Reforged. If you need the ROM files, search for "Roms Megathread" on Google and explore the first result, it's a massive repository of ROM files for various old systems.

The earliest you can find it is on Route 120, before the third badge. It's the route located to the left of Teknos City, where you can head to the Boulder Mine to rescue the lost girl and find Whitney.

Super Gold 97 uses the Spaceworld 1997 demo sprites, while Reforged uses the final game's sprites mixed together with brand new ones done in the same style.

First you need the ROM files for Pokemon Gold Version and Crystal Version. I can't tell you where to get those but it shouldn't be too hard to find on Google. Next you need the patch files , which come in IPS format. See the video's description for links. To patch them, I recommend LunarIPS. You can find it here: fusoya.eludevisibility.org/lips/ Extract LunarIPS somewhere, run it and click Apply IPS Patch. It will open a window where you first need to select the IPS file to use. Once you've done that, you need to select the ROM file to patch. For Super Gold 97, you need to select your Gold Version ROM. For GS97 Reforged, you need to select the Crystal Version ROM. Once finished, the program should give you a message saying the patching is complete. To play them, you need a GBC emulator such as Gambatte. sourceforge.net/projects/gambatte/files/gambatte/

Strength can be found in an item ball in the Boulder Mines, which is required to rescue the little girl. Rock Smash is acquired after a story event in the Radio Tower.

Good review explaining the differences, although I do feel like the spritework wasn't exactly appreciated for reforged in the video. We all worked hard to make the game look great, and I hope you change your mind about it in the future.

If that's how it came off, I'm sorry. That wasn't my intention. I quite like the spritework in Reforged, and it does a great job at matching the style used in Generation 2. My "criticism" isn't about the quality of the spritework, but rather the overall style not being as unique (err, exotic might be a better term?) in my opinion.

Yes you can, all Pokémon that had evolutions are present in both Super Gold 97 and Reforged. However, some Pokémon do have differences in how they evolve between the two ROM hacks. In Super Gold 97, Ditto evolves by using an item called Covenant Orb, while in Reforged you can simply use a Metal Coat on it. On both, Farfetch'd evolves by simply leveling up, but in Super Gold 97 it happens at level 25, while in Reforged it happens at level 33. I may Create a Gba Styled Remake of this on Pokemon Essentials, titled Nihon Recarnated, there will be new pokemon made for this Reimagining, some old pokemon will return but Kanto's going to get A massive Redesign, as it going to be a City titled Trayuki City, the Hub of Nihon, with the ultimate Remix of Every kanto city/town's theme fused into one. Also each town's getting a rename. Debyuu Town, Orienna City, Portill City, Ravelle Town, Chylled Town, Fiorden City, Rasamoto Island, Crimina City, Altimic Town, Vetalyn City. There's also a brand new Evil Team, who is the Rival to team Rocket, Team Wraith, who Mainly Use Ghost, Dark & Fighting Pokemon, the team Leader is a Female, and the Evil team is based on the yakuza, and their plan is to awaken the Acient beast who once destroyed Nihon a thousand years ago, And use it to take over Nihon.

They had limited space. That being said the variety sucks. 251 is a good amount of Pokemon but so much is wasted on filler and repeated types that have nothing distinguishable from better pokemon. Ie Dodrio/Fearow, Venusaur/Vileplume. There's next to no Ghost or Dragon types. Then others like the Dark types have terrible movepools for their stat distributions.
