Damn when I was a grom in the 80's it used to take 6 months of saving just to buy a board, if you weren't sponsored you had one board and you cherished it more than anything in the world, you rode it in all conditions big or small, you looked after it like it was a Fabergé egg, even the sponsored guys only had a couple of boards, now I see so many surfers that have 20 plus boards, that's just insane to me..

The kids coming up today & this “modern era” of surfing is/are off the charts sick with it. Watching these cats makes me so proud. I’m a product of the 70’s & 80’s & whatever talent & skills we thought we had learned/possessed after two decades of surfing, these kids surpassed before they got out of jr. high. It’s f’ing unbelievable. I have 2 young daughters that have taken up the sport & through them, I’m quasi connected to the current surf generation & consider myself lucky for it. For a few years there, I wasn’t so sure where surfing was “going” but now that my kids are living the lifestyle & im lucky enough to see these kids on the regular, I’m convinced there’s way more growth ahead & the sport is in more than capable hands. There is no ceiling & their potential is limitless. Hopefully, pro surfing will grow at the same rapid rate & become much more lucrative for the participants!!!

But also, if you just go by surfers on tour, San Clemente has more than any other single town with Kolohe, Kanoa (I think), and Conner. I don't know where Lau, Florence and Moniz are from exactly but I doubt it's the same town. Italo and Felipe live in San Clemente too, don't they? Trestles and waves in San Clemente are Point Breaks... waves are usually small and super soft but probably consistent... Im just theorizing but maybe this helps to build stronger surfers and there are a lot of places to surf in SoCal altogether beach breaks and few reef breaks... additionally the climate is milder warmer so its easier to go out practice more often (than for example NorCal... Im from NorCal its more rugged up there plus size waves more big wave surfing up there... ) Plus it's Southern California and there's a positive surf culture here... I think today Vans Opening starts at Huntington Beach (super fun to watch... sit on the sand and watch amazing surfers on tiny waves... once it was big and pumping few years ago but usually surf seem to get tiny by the time contest starts... too funny :)
