I was a policeman in Daytona at the time and watched a lot of the filming on the streets and at the track. The glory days of NASCAR. I did enjoy the movie and it was cool to see the scenes that I was at when they were filming. I did give one of the directors a speeding ticket, but I can't remember which one it was. That was so long ago.

I went to the clash and qualifying races at Daytona in 1990. Greg Sacks actually raced the City Chevrolet in the clash. Between qualifying races they brought the camera cars out for filming. After the qualifying races they filmed the helicopter scene.

Okay, a few things here... 1. They didn't just film at Daytona, they also filmed race scenes at Bristol and Phoenix in 1989, and Daytona was the last set of scenes to be filmed in 1990... 2. Hut Strictlin was one of the legitimate drivers as well as Bobby Hamilton Sr., and Greg Sachs, who would actually enter into the Winston Cup Series under the Newman-Hendrick Motorsports banner in 1989-1991 with Al Unser Jr as a replacement in the 1993 Daytona 500 (as a one-off) 3. Stanton Barrett was the stunt driver for the big Daytona wreck scene, which is what got him wanting to drive in NASCAR (which he did for parts of seasons for different teams, including Roush Racing)

Also Charlotte. The helicopter loading scene (up close with acting) might have been filmed at the actual Daytona race but the biggest part of that scene was filmed at Charlotte. I was laying carpet in the vip suites for a few days during filming. We watched them film post crash, loading and flying off of the helicopter. They did it like 5 times. The wrecked cars were there smoking, crowds from all over the infield running over to watch and then the loading and take-offs. Also the wall was painted "Daytona"

It's a JD Motorsports in Gaffney. Johnny Davis bought several of the cars used in the movies, including some of the camera cars to be repurposed for his race teams in the 90s. The solid black and Mellow Yellow camera car sat out from on his race shop and Twister Kart Manufacturing for the better part of the 90s and early 2000's.

There was a great Days of Thunder ride at Kings Dominion theme park during the early to mid 90s in central Va. I vividly remember there being several cars on site but no idea if they were replicas or not. Good memories of riding it every year. It was basically a short film clip while sitting in seats that moved.

In 1989, when the movie was made, Ford switched to a new Thunderbird body. With the heavy Chevy involvement in the movie, Ford refused to allow the 89 T-bird to appear, so if you notice, only 88 T-birds are in the movie, most notably the 21 Wood Brothers Citgo car. By my count, there are are over 30 continuity mistakes in the movie's first hour alone, including the infamous "hi Tom" in the lake scene with Cole and Rowdy and their significant others.
@matteven
@matteven Жыл бұрын
The continuity mistakes in my opinion are what make it great. The fact that Nascar said “as long as the camera cars qualify they can race.” Made it even better and ushered in a whole new generation of fans.

We can't do that now because people's feelings would get hurt... and I'm being serious there that's literally why a lot of the rules exist it's because people bought their way into the sport and couldn't compete with real professionals and had to cry and whine about unfair practices until NASCAR got sick of hearing it and said f*** it I'm done listening to your crying everybody gets one list of parts that's it here's your car let's go race

You mean fuel injected engines rather then carborated ones. The Larry mcreynolds type Well.....if they are actual stock cars they have to mimic the fuel injection that became the standard with all the manufacturers. Getting the fuel/air ratio right was how the teams got the advantage. Just like today. The biggest teams engines are made damn near the same. Smaller teams get used ones

Great video, I appreciate your efforts in digging into the history and details of the film and the process of its making. It’s one of those films you think about when you hear the phrase “they don’t make ‘em like that anymore”. I wish I could have seen this in theaters but I was too young at the time. I truly appreciate those who create films that try and make it as authentic as possible without the use of CGI. I’ll admit I have a lot of films I enjoy that are full of CGI but there’s nothing’s quite like the golden days before this technologically advanced period we’re in.

I can't BELIEVE you missed THIS one.... The scene where Rowdy and Cole refuse to let the other drive and end up in rentals, and basically destroying them on the beach, is based on an ACTUAL event between Dale Earnhardt and Geoff Bodine. Who, during the mid 80's were pretty much "at" each other's throats. Bodine (at the time) drove for Hendrick. Their fued got SO bad (as Cole and Rowdy's) that a dinner meeting was called by Bill France Sr. and the incident occurred on the way TO this meeting. Dale Jr. has even talked about this on his own podcast. Other than that, I really enjoyed the vid.👍🏻

I think there is one aspect that I picked up on and nobody has ever mentioned it so it could just be me, but I always held the theory that they had given the 51 Exxon car and the 46 Superflo car those specific color schemes so they could use more footage of the 1990 Daytona 500 in the movie. I think this because when you look at some of the Daytona racing footage, the 3 car of Dale Earnhardt and the 10 car of Derrike Cope look nearly identical with the sunset orange overlay and far away shots.

@@michaelbloom5342 Same. I was an absolute die-hard fan all my life, watched NASCAR with my dad since before I can remember, been to several races, got memorabilia and autographs. Late 80s to late 90s NASCAR gave me some of the best memories of my life. But it's just not the same anymore. I do still watch it, but that's more out of tradition and nostalgia, plus the love of speed and horsepower in general, than anything else. I still have a few favorite drivers. But no one I'm die-hard for. I still think it's one of the most welcoming, family friendly sports, and sports communities, that there is. I just don't have the same interest I once did. And I think that's true for a lot of fans. They took away so much of what made it so fun to watch. And it just doesn't seem as competitive anymore, with all the new points rules and whatnot. Yes, they made it safer, and that's great. But there's just not much of that adrenaline pumping thrill anymore. They didn't have to sacrifice one for the other. Plus they had to throw politics into the mix. It's just not the same. And I hate that. I miss what it used to be. I miss REAL NASCAR.

Great video! My feelings about Days of Thunder have always been that it is a great movie about my favorite sport but you have to have a good deal of what's called "suspension of disbelief" to really enjoy it. It's about NASCAR, but it isn't NASCAR reality. It's a made-up story told in a way that is meant to be entertainment first and factuality taking a distant second place (at leadt a lap down). If that was their intention, they hit that one way out of the park! On a side note, I was absolutely THRILLED to see that gorgeous blue Beretta GT in a couple of the scenes. May I assume that it's your personal car, in that you said something about slipping a Beretta/Corsica reference into the bideo? My first (nearly) new car was a blue, 5-speed 1989 Beretta GT, bought in November of 1990 with just 12,xxx miles on the odometer. It was a great car, reasonably quick, responsive, and with decent handling, especially for a front-wheel-drive car of the era. Oh, and it also was big enough for my family to use as a second car (3 kids ages 10, 7, and 5 at the time) and gas mileage in the mid-20's, which was pretty good at the time (my current Cobalt SS gets around 40 mpg, but it's a couple of generations newer). I really miss my Beretta and hope to some day replace it. Maybe after we hit the Powerball lottery for a billion or two. Then it can share my new "Garage Mahal" with the couple of dozen Corvairs that I'll be getting around the same time! 😀

Drove it til the wheels fell off, lol, which was in 2009. Was so sad to see it go. Loved both of those cars. Oh, and I learned to drive in a 1992 Chevy Lumina, as well as a Chevy Astro Van. A couple of years ago my fiancé and I went the Hollywood Star Cars Museum in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Among their vast collection of "star cars" was the #51 Mello Yellow car from the movie. Whether the car on display is actually from the movie or not is up for debate, even though the museum claims that all cars are the actual ones from the movie or TV show they were featured in. It was clear to me, however, that this car had been on a racetrack at one point in it's life, as there were tire rubber "marbles" on the floor between the seat and the door panel. As my father used to race circle track, I'm pretty familiar with what these look like, and can tell that they are genuine. The other part that caught my eye, was the silver plate riveted to the top of the drivers side dash just below the windshield that had "Mello-Yellow-01" stamped into it. I'm sure that this is just a replica of one of the movie cars, but I must say, they did a great job trying to pass if off as legit!

I hate it that Zimmer doesn't like this score, because the reality is that he NAILED IT for a NASCAR movie. It's perfect in every scene. And, Mr. Hans Zimmer, if you're reading this, I'd put it in my Top 10 favorites (and I am an admittedly nerdy soundtrack nut).

Great movie, but one thing I will say, Hendrix only provided the mellow, yellow car and rowdy’s car. All of the other cars in the back shot were stunt vehicles with small block Chevy‘s on a NASCAR chassis with junkyard components. But the mellow, yellow and rowdy’s car were legitimate Hendrick racing NASCAR’s.

I might have misremember moment, but I think I remember a scene when Nicole says "Hey Tom" instead of "Hey Cole". It's on the track when he's walking it before the last race. It's like a sun set or orange sky as they're both walking. Again, it could be that I was 11 when I was watching. But I remember my Mom rewinding the VHS because she heard it and wanted to verify to see if all six (my brothers and my dad) heard it

Merch; there was also plastic model kits, but for some reason they chose to release those in 1/24 scale instead of the more popular 1/25 scale. So, if a kid wanted to display them with other NASCAR models, they were slightly bigger.

Revell/Monogram produced NASCAR kits in 1/24, AMT produced them in 1/25. I would guess it all came down to licensing. RM was willing to pay more for the license than AMT was, so, 1/24 it is. I don't imagine NASCAR or Days of Thunder or Chev or whoever, really gives a sh*t about scale. They're more concerned with dollar signs.

My dad was a fabricator for Hendrick R&D when the movie was made. I was 15 at the time and was hired as part time help . The 4 cars that were the real race cars were all built in the r&d shop. They actually went on the become the slim fast #18 driven by Greg Sacks (Who was also 1 of the drivers in the movie)and raced in the 1990 cup season. Actually ran upfront at both Talladega & Daytona that year. The r&d shop was lead by Gary Dehart who was the crew chief for the slim fast #18 & which went on to become the Kellogg’s #5 driven to a cup championship by Terry Labonte with Gary Dehart as crew chief. So that is where the 4 real Days of Thunder racecars ended up. All others were show cars or junk cars with new bodys.

The Toy cars that were sold at Exxon gas stations were not made by Tyco or matchbox. They were some nockoff diecast car manufactured in China and I had all 5 Exxon, superflo, hardies, Mello yellow and City Chevy cars. When I convinced my grandfather to take me to the Exxon gas station all the City Chevy cars were sold out so the attendant sold me the display car it had hard plastic wheels like a hot wheels not like the others that had rubber tires.
