Over 44 million borrowers in the U.S. struggle to navigate the overwhelming waters of student loan debt while also trying to maintain their mental and emotional health. Jaz Burgess shares how Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) helped her take back her life and reframe her perspective on student loan repayment. Jaz hopes her story will remind viewers of their worth and value beyond their student loan balance. Jaz Burgess is the Founder and Executive Director of Hustle Meets Grace, an online Wellness Consulting Company specializing in integrating yoga, meditation and mindfulness-based practices. After attaining her professional counseling license, Jaz is looking forward to expanding the offerings at Hustle Meets Grace to include a counseling private practice and yoga studio to help clients find healing through mindful movement and relaxation. In addition, Jaz is a life coach for first generation college students UTSA, where she facilitates leadership experiences focusing on personal development, financial literacy and emotional intelligence. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Alright, I'll confess I expected a "forgive my student" loan speech. I was wrong. Yes, I agree parents and high school advisors fail to explain reality. After all in what other situation would a bank give an 18-year-old a $50,000 to $100,000 loan? It really is a two sided sword. One, the failure to teach financial responsibility. Second, I offer the example of a friend of mine who quit his job as an educator because he saw from the inside that most four year college programs are a scam to take advantage of young, inexperienced people. I forgot that there are some young folks like this presenter and my granddaughter who are smarter than to get themselves into fiscal traps. Good message.

It really is a double-edged sword. Financial literacy should definitely be at the top of our list! Thank you for watching Mike!

I'm certainly in Group 3. Growing up in Central Appalachia, I thought it was college or bust. I'm not proud of my poor financial decisions or lack of financial literacy, but there is a role of acceptance I don't think we as a society talks about enough. This talk was so unexpected. Very good!

1. Was that 100k for a degree in engineering , biotechnology , accounting, medicine? A discipline with a good ROI? 2. Did you pay back your debt? Group 1- think carefully about your degree program; go to a state school, don't drown in debt to start with, save your bday/Christmas gifts of money. Group 2. Look for scholarships , bursaries, from both the school and other avenues. Work hard, you are there to study not party. Co-op programs. Group 3. Lots of sacrifices to pay off high debt, BUT if you did the right thing when in group 1 & 2, you may be in a favourable position. All the Best

You've got it! You're absolutely right! In my case, majored in journalism... not a huge return on investment unfortunately. Thank you so much for watching!
