The winged wheel is from the national railway co. of Belgium. That design was used from 1835 to 1870. The little lion was also from Belgium. The mystery wallet medal is a Beggars Badge originally created in 1566 by Protestant Dutch who wore it as a patriotic medal. King Phillip of Spain was on one side and two hands clasped inside the opening of a begger's bag on the other. The inscription was " In all fidelity to the King, even to carrying a beggar's sack"

As Nicola mentions, many different entities have used, and indeed many still do use, the winged wheel and crown as their identity. The national Danish railways DSB is one, and some of their old designs resemble this one as well.
@VenusDeMilitant

@@dorric123 Very true but the angle of the wings and details of the crown (also looking at the amount of french wordage on the beach they appear to be on the Belgiun coast) make them each a bit different.

Hi Nicola. I've actually sailed on the Uganda. Before the Falklands War she had been used for many years as an educational cruise ship. It gave a lot of school children the chance to see a little bit of the world by cruising aboard her. I went with my school, in 1981 I think, on a cruise around the mediterranean visiting the sites, I saw many Roman and Greek ruins and cities, visited the holy land and Jerusalem plus many more stop offs. I also think it was mid cruise when the Falklands War was declared and the kids who were aboard her at the time had to be flown home early. She was a lovely old ship

Hi Nicola! The interesting pendant is from the Liberaal Vlaams StudentenVerbond (Liberal Flemish Students Association), an organization for Dutch speaking students in Belgium. The Liberal Archive in Ghent has an identical one in their collections. The "IVSQVES A PORTER LA BESACE" design goes much further back in history to the Dutch Revolt during the Eighty Years' War where it appeared in identical form on Geuzen or Sea Beggars' medals in 16th century. The winged wheel button resembles the logo of the the Danish state railway (DSB), but several other railways in Europe have also used very similar logos. Thanks as always for your wonderful videos.

That cobalt blue bottle looks like the bottles that held *_Evening in Paris Parfume_* that my mother wore around 1953. It had a delightful scent and when my mother and my dad were going out on a date, she would splash a bit around her neck and her earlobes. Now, being a logical little child, I assumed that anything that smelled that heavenly...that good, *_MUST_* also taste good. Like I said...logical One day, when my mother was busy and otherwise occupied, I crawled into the bathroom. Putting my vast amount of knowledge that I had amassed over 18 months, I saw a way up that great pinnacle of the bathroom counter. *THERE* ahead, was the treasure that beckoned me on. My quest was now at hand! My first swallow from that gorgeous blue bottle was a disappointment and burned my throat as I swallowed it. I just needed to drink a bit more...maybe? After downing a complete bottle of "Evening in Paris", I guess the scent wafted through our little home to the nostrils of my mother. Panicked calls to my doctor with assurances that I may be quite drunk for a bit (about 190 proof parfume) there shouldn't be any long-term effects. Short term effects...? Well, that's another matter, altogether. For about 7 days after my gastronomic expedition, my nappies had the smell of "Evening in Paris", along with semi-digested strained peas, and carrots and milk. I guess my mother had her reasons...but, she never replaced that bottle of parfume, and would become nauseous whenever she smelled it. Logical? Yes. Smart? Not really...

Hi Nicola. I have been following you for about 18 months. This particular post is particularly poignant for me. In 1982 I was serving with the Royal Navy in the south Atlantic. The ship I was on was hit and sunk on May 25th. I was wounded and spent some time on the SS Uganda as a patient before going to Montevideo and then home. I am still in touch with nurses and crew from then. Many thanks. Nick

Aloha Nicola! What great footage of your "Common Egret!" At our recycling center, the worker had trained an Egret. Each time a bug; (like in our case a🪳), crawled out of a can or bottle, he tapped on the building and the Common Egret would run over & eagerly eat the 🪳or 🦎! (it was SO cute)!! Great finds!😊

Hey Nicola ✨️ I always like the inclusion of wildlife in your videos, especially those that visit your home. Many years ago I had just finished the school run and upon getting home we duscovered a fox and her 6 cubs sun bathing on our back lawn. I had discovered freshly dug soil behind my shed and knew it wasn't a tunnel from the 'great escape'....we went into the garden and the cubs ran down the fox hole....the mum got up stretched and went to the hole, called to them and walked towards us (about 5 feet away), layed back down and the cubs followed.....I said to my very young children that they now trust us, so always remember that, but respect them and keep a safe distance if they come out. During their stay and until they left, they never messed in the garden. I still have the pics I took. I now live in a rural village and I cannot get the wild birds to feed from my feeder 🤦, neighbours have same problem...pour the seed on the lawn and down they come. Finds like the miniature heron are meant for you. Stay Safe Always 🦋🌻🕊☯️☮️🧡🫶

Great finds Nicola - thanks for sharing. I was very surprised to see the parakeet at the end of your video - I didn't know there were any in the UK. But I see from a quick Google search that there is quite a population of non-native parakeets in London, originating from zoos and private collections. This beach is amazing! While you were picking things out, I kept looking around the screen and wondering what's that? That's typical, but today it was what's that, and that and that and that? So many little bits! Also, on the memory game: I worked with kids for more than 30 years and we would often play a variation: we'd gather in a circle around a group of disparate little objects and take some time to try to remember them. Than a volunteer would leave the room and the rest of us would choose one thing to remove. Then we would call the child back in to see if they could pick out what was missing. It always amazed me who the kids were who were either terrible at it, or those who would know what was gone as soon as they came to the circle. We'd even make the game harder -- add more objects, re-arrange them once the whiz kid left the room -- and some would still just glance and know. Others who were good would need to take some time and then figure it out. I think these kids would make fantastic mudlarkers. And I feel like you and Si would probably do well at our game! (by the way, I was one of the terrible players; the kids would get such a kick out of me struggling while they all knew the answer.) And, Mrs. Fox! One of my other favorite KZbin channels is Wildlife Aid. They just posted a video yesterday about a fox getting its head stuck in a bottle. I haven't watched it yet, but my first thought on seeing the thumbnail was, 'Is that fox a mudlarker?' Finally, Nic, your videos do so much to make my week better, especially when the week has been emotionally challenging. This week was an especially grueling one, but letting myself sink into the gentle, generous flow of your kindness was so sweet and calming. Thanks so much!

If you open the blade there is probably more information on it. I kept hoping you would open it. Good episode!

Was the big piece of turquoise class you picked up an ashtray and did you keep it just for the gorgeous colors? I always have such a wonderful time with you on your day outdoors I love them so much I call them adventures because you never know what you are going to find or where it is going to lead you! Stay happy healthy and safe Nicola

Hello Nicola! Okay, that cobalt blue bottle/vase is to die for! Blessings and good tidings from NorCal. Thanks for another wonderful video full of treasures. My visual memory is terrible, but the idea for your game is sweet! ❣️❤️

Nick, you could turn some of your beach close ups into jigsaw puzzles! Would be a fun seller esp. for your viewers! Looks like an Evening In Paris perfume bottle. Nice.

I fully support your idea of a video in french, because it's a pleasure to listen to you, but also... I'm french. 😅😊

Well, you had an for the key, and you got an eye for the key, that worked out nicely! What a muddy, messy, magical place the Thames must be, if only there was a place like that, nearby to me, Id be hunting all day as much as I could, if I lived near the Thames I definitely would!... Australia, 235 years of colonization doesn't make for ancient historical finds, just on rare occasions, but not by me!... Im a bit worried about your squirrel, do you think mother fox might be the reason?... Thank you Nicola, for a wonderful outing! Cheers!
