I've always thought he was a Wendigo that regained his self awareness. Can't explain the magical ability from him, the type I mean, but Elias' similarity to a Wendigo is almost striking. Plus, he has mentioned that he's certain he's eaten humans before, and that's what Wendigos do.

The only similarity would be shapeshifting ability (and that thing is far from uncommon among spirits worldwide)... And, I guess, manners (leshy does not like foul words), but this thing is not uncommon as well.
