That's a classic round now. There are little kids in villages all over Africa that know what "four-five-eight" means. It got a bad rap in the early days when game department cullers bought pallet loads of ammo and stored it in hot, humid warehouses for years. It's a great round. Load it with lead bullets and Trail Boss powder for very inexpensive and fun plinking. Thanks, Greg!

Be cautious when using the 400gr speer flat point. Years ago my mate wounded an Impala and finished it of with one of them out of his .458 win. Range was about 20-30 metres. The bullet completely disintegrated and failed to penetrate on a broadside shot. Not made for win mag velocities.

Glad I'm not the only person who knows the old fashioned bore sighting method. I did my brothers Savage 110 7mm Rem mag years ago for him. It came scoped from the factory w/ a cheap 3x9 that supposedly been bore sighted already. Needless to say, he could hardly hit the paper at 100 yards but I got it fairly close to centered with your method.

Very nice rifle. I’ve had models 70s In 375h&h, 416 rem mag and 458 win mag. All beautiful working rifles. Recently had a very nice Parker hale in 458 wm I sold to a fellow in the northwest territories. I like the Leupold vx3 2.5-8x36 scopes on most of my larger bore rifles. Friend of mine uses one for Elk. Tough animal! 3 shots in a 5” group and the bull walked like nothing was wrong! Then he fell over about 40yds from the last shot.

What a beautiful rifle, and you handle it well. Those "ornamental" bolts are more than ornamental - they actually reinforce the stock to prevent splitting from hard recoil. I had a Ruger M77 in 458 WinMag but sold it and replaced it with a Ruger Number One in 458 WinMag. Great fun to shoot. Just because I could, I loaded some Hornady 300 JHP to 3,000 fps. - just for fun. They seemed to have held together even though I'm sure they weren't designed for that MV. Kicked like a mule, but reasonably accurate. I also load a lot of cast bullets, which perform well. I find the 458 a very versatile cartridge - from target shooting, to plinking, and all the way to largest game in NA. And, Africa, for that matter.

I hear you about controlled direction of recoil, but I still felt that ... reminds me the first time I tried a fellow's 404 Jeffery. Off hand, stout. On the bench, ouchies. My largest is the 450 Marlin in a takedown BLR and it has gotten very little exercise as it joined the safe in the last 2 years...

If you set the rifle high up on the bench so that you are sitting straight up and taking the recoil on the entire shoulder it helps a lot!

I have a Leopold 1.75 - 6 on my 673. 350 rem mag and it works great and suits the rifle. It’s considerably heavier than a model 600 or 660 and is easy on the shoulder , even from the bench. I found it interesting that you are going to put that scope on a 350 rem mag. Interesting and well done video, North 61.

It's an interesting scope...I like the rangefinding feature and the reticle design. The power range is right in the sweet spot as well. I love 1-2 power on the low end for brush use and bear defense.

I ditched the .458 because I could load the 350 gr's into my 1885 .45-70 and be within 250fps of the 458. Once I got a .416 rem mag - then everything changed. Solid 350yrd gun with 350gr X bullets. With the 400gr X it completely flipped a moose over backwards from a shot in the chest. Stuck his antlers in the dirt upside down - had a hell of a time getting him unstuck!! Recovered the bullet against the hide on the back of the ham.

The 458 is a beast of a caliber! I've been wanting one of those LabRadar units. So much better than a chrono (except on the pocket book). I have a Leupold 2-7x with QD rings on my 350RM. I'm no expert on BC but from what I recall, there is a couple ways to measure BC.

Very informative video. I recently acquired a 1979 model 70 458wm supergrade. I'll never go on a Safari hunt. It's more for collecting reasons. Can you give me an idea what recoil is comparable to? I own a 10ga single shot, 300wm and a Mossberg 500 that I've run several slugs through it. People say it's a hard shove

With 500 grain bullets from the bench it's obnoxious. Both fast and heavy recoil. With 300 grain bullets it's not too bad...maybe more like a light 300 Win Mag with heavy bullets. 400 grain bullets shade the difference though still not to bad.

Nice rifle I use the speer 400 in my 45/70 and the 350 grainers cant get it low enough to use in the marlin. Both are 458 dia.

Cool stuff. I've got one of the winchester classic in a lefty stainless 338win. Nice rifles. I've been divesting myself of things I don't need like excessive rifles. I got the leverguns and lefty bolt rifles I need and have sold off most everything else. Feels good not having as much "stuff". That Lab radar chrono is a super tool to have.

My only complaint with the Model 70 (and all bolt guns for that matter) is that the drop at the comb is designed for use with a scope, and it really isn't enough to permit good use of the iron sights. With the comb nearly in line with the barrel, one has to cant his head over at a steep angle to line up with the sights, causing him to look downrange at almost a 45 degree angle. I DO wish that they offered stocks designed for use with the sights, say, with a 3 1/2" drop or so. I had a CZ550 in 375 H&H that was designed with so little drop (like the Model 70) that it gave me a headache on a long range session, so I had to sell it. Nearly broke my heart.

You might want to try those Barnes originals with the magazine loaded. You will likely find the rounds in the mag get more than a little Pre-expanded. I really like the all copper Barnes or the Woodleigh protected point in a hard kicker. I have always liked your vid's from here in SE Alaska.

What a fantastic rifle and caliber combination. I'm big fans of both but, oddly enough, do not have that particular combination. Oh, I have Model 70's - one made in 1953 (.30-'06 caliber) and one "pre-64" made in 1995 (.375 H&H caliber). I will say, as collectable as the older ones are, the newer one is, in fact, a better rifle. More precisely made, more accurate, smoother bolt operation, better trigger. Oh, and I do own one .458, in the form of a Ruger #1 Tropical (one of my favorite all time rifles). Maybe one day I'll combine the two and get that Model 70 in .458. As far as bullets, Levergun50 is correct - that 400 grain Speer is very soft. It is meant for "standard" velocity .45-70 loads, suitable for Trapdoors and the like. It will expand reliably at those low velocities (1,100-1,400 fps), but will come apart like a big varmint bullet when pushed to the limit by a .458. Speer intend their 350 grain bullet for that use, it's of far tougher construction.

Thanks for doing a bison oriented video. All I have for centre fire cartridges right now is 308 win and 303 British. As far as larger cartridges go I have really only looked at online ballistics charts and I don't know anyone who has taken I bison themselves. I was considering either a model 70 in 375 H and H considering it's popularity as an African big game cartridge or a Remington 700 sender in 300 RUM because of the success my uncle has enjoyed with it (taking bull elk at 600 plus yards comfortably). At the end of the day, a good cartridge won't make up for a lack of proficiency, but these things are expensive and I can only buy so many guns. So ideally I want to get it right the first time.

@@north61 as for bison, I always hear from people who have gone on hunts, but it's always somebody else who did the shooting (most of them are shooting 30-30 Win and 303 British and other cartridges under the threshold). I constantly hear about it taking multiple shots to put one down. My big question is how much of that is lack of mass/energy and how much is shot placement?

@@RB01138 I have shot a pile of moose but still haven't taken a Bison...shot placement is critical but I would say Bison are really muscular and large boned...and are one animal where the maximum horse power that a person can handle is warranted. I know of a native hunter in the NWT who was stomped to pieces after shooting a Bison with a 30-30. I agree with the 30-06-180 grain minimum in the Yukon and I believe a bit more is even better. Personally I think the mid-bores with more bullet weight are better than faster 30's.

I would think the 458 Winchester would make a great back-up gun sans scope. I would think it's a little clumsy as a hunting rifle in North America. Then I don't know much.

@@frankgulla8782 love my 358 Winchester! I actually picked up a Ruger American Predator a few years ago.. Ruger made a special run of 400 of them. For the price of $399 it was a no brainer :) I also had to head down the rabbit hole and get a 350 Legend. Picked up a Savage Axis ii stainless almost two years ago. I got to see first hand how it lays the smack down on big bodied pennsylvania bucks. I harvested a big bodied eight point and my brother's nephew downed a huge 10 point with his. Both complete pass through and both bucks didn't travel far after the shot. Mine went thirty yards and his went twenty. That rifle is perfect for hunting the mountains of PA.. where most shots are within 100 yards. I use the 358 for black bear.. haven't seen one in season yet. I'm sure it will do the job though :) Love the 35 Whelen! It's the ballistic twin of the 350 Remington Mag! You definitely have two fine 35's

@@frankgulla8782 there isn't anything in North America that it wouldn't lay the the smack down on. The 358 Winchester is a great cartridge. Zero to 150 it'd knock any bear down! I think a lot of hunters don't buy into anything past 30 caliber.. my opinion is their missing out on the fun 35's. Good luck this season Frank

That's a Rem 660 with a 20 inch barrel. The original 600 variant has an 18.5. Both super handy and accuate as heck.

Before getting a different scope try a 10moa or 20moa base plate, that will raise your scope up giving you extra elevation.

Too late it now wears a fixed 4X that has loads of adjustment. That 350 has the 1.75-6X. It's all good.

I know an old Alaskan native seal hunter that clams 800yard consistent hits with his .458wm I guess with time a practice. I luv the Hornady 350gn round nose with medium to hot loads with H335 powder. For and moose smashing load try 350 round nose with 69gns imr 4198 but be warned the scope will bite. The older reloading books have hotter loads. LOL!! I am just looking at a Hornady third edition 1982 book vs newer 2016 tenth edition for the 350 rn they list max @62.7 gains @2400fps with IMR4198 in 1982 they list IMR4198 maxload @70.8 @2500fps just wow i grew up shooting 70gn imr4198. WHO DO I TRUST? PS NICE GUNS

People exaggerate sometimes. You do want to have some experience but It is pretty manageable as long as you keep the round count at a reasonable level. Upper end of fun though. The stock really manages the recoil well.

Just my experience; most recently confirmed with a Nosler 21 in 6.5 PRC that pops rounds into the air, rather than feeding them into the chamber. Don't know why but I report what I see.

@@normreno6994 Antler Arms in Quebec... made the Fury for Fierce when Fierce started...very well made copy of a Sako, and PWG from Winnipeg... very high quality but expensive firearms made for military sniping mostly. Also a bunch of small makers. I have some Awesome American made firearms but some of the newer models seem like proto-types sent out the door without proper testing. They usually don't last long but I have had Kimber Mountain Ascents, Nosler model 22 in 6.5PRC, Forbes model 20 and Weatherby back-country Ti's that don't feed like they should. All very expensive and hard to stomach. They eventually make it right but the ride back across the border is a hassle and shouldn't have to happen. Don't know why? My best feeding rifles are also American.... ?

Understandable but you would be hunting Bison illegally as there is a minimum caliber and the great 7-08 doesn't make it. 30 caliber, 180 grains and 2800 ft pounds here, so the 30-06 would make it. If you see a grizzly 15 yards away in the alders you might also wish for a bit more. I'd personally be ok with a 7-08 but I do find more horse power a lot of fun. Sometimes a dumb guy is born who thinks managing recoil is a type of fun. That's me.

The magnificent .375 H&H was a no brainer after that.
