Man, I can almost smell that fire! Been watching your channels since you started them and they take me back to my childhood! (born in 1955) We live way out in the sticks of northeast Louisiana. I remember fires in the fireplace (no luxury of a stove) for cooking and heat in the winter, mosquito netting over iron beds with cotton and feather bed mattresses (netting was stretched between saplings tied to the head and legs of each bedstead). We washed our clothes in a big cast iron pot to the side of the house where the metal forge was placed. We bathed in a #8 washtub in front of the fireplace in winter and outside in the summer. My grandpa farmed 80 acres with 2 mules and a plow! Your place is real nice and looks fancy compared to what we worked so hard for. Makes you feel fortunate compared with how hard it was for the original settlers of this continent to build their way across those many miles dosen't it!

I live out in the Chihuahua desert alone. No elec poles for miles and I have to buy and haul water. This guy has got it set up real nice. I'm actually living the pioneer life. Brother I'd take your old stove in a heartbeat. I don't even have insulation. I know how to do the things I need but no funds for it. Fixed income, I'm 62. Love the solitude and yes it's harsh life for old lady but the desert here in terlingua is like heaven. No TV no bs. It's a beautiful life. But not easy.

I have a cream/white colored cast iron stove in my rural home in Northern California and I have to agree that it looks nicer than most flat steel units but if your old one is reaching "retirement age" and the body is showing rusty cracks I would be concerned about carbon monoxide leaking into the home. As small as your place is, that is nothing to mess with!! Replacing yours with a new unit was a smart move... and we all want to be watching you and Cali and the rest of your family for a long time to come!

I was using fuel-oil for my heat. With the new prices, it was costing us $500-$1200 per month to heat our 1100 sq.ft. space. Just installed a new wood burning stove. Now it cost me nothing to heat my home. I have lots of free firewood on our property. The stove was cheap enough at about $700, but all the piping and everything else to meet code was about $3000. We installed it ourselves because to hire somebody, they wanted to charge $5000 not including materials. Thank God for KZbin showing us how to do that. We are in our 60’s and have a 30 foot high roof with an 11% grade on it. We rented a lift and got it done. Not easy when you haven’t done anything like this before, but with Gods grace we did it!

Congratulations on your new Jotul. We bought the exact same stove this past winter and absolutely love it. It will take some getting used too, in managing the burn cycle and dealing with the efficiency of the cook top. The heat transfer to the top is very rapid, so I bought cast iron trivets because everything was scorching. As far as the efficiency of the stove for heating, there are probably more efficient stoves out there, but for us moving from a 50 year old stove to our Jotul was an amazing experience. We heat with electric and our heating cost went to zero, cooking on gas went down dramatically, and we used significantly less wood. You will find the amount of viewable fire will very pleasant. Everyone in my family started falling asleep in the room watching it. I predict you will love your Jotul!

I like efficiency and the wider window to see inside and ability to reflect more fire light out. It also looks to have a bigger cooking surface, which I really like. As I watch you bring in the new stove and take out the old, I realize how much time and effort you have put into the cabin and all the other buildings and projects. When I first started watching as you started building the cabin, which entailed a lot of work, from building from the ground up, then burning the boards for the roof, to chic-king the walls to building the floor, etc. I never imagined how far you would be going as far as the projects you have done and the ones you plan to do. You have really done an amazing job and you should be very proud of yourself and the work you have done. I think it is incredible and I look forward to my notifications that you have posted a new video. I have learned a lot watching you doing everything and I suppose I live vicariously through you. You can clean that upper part of the chimney from the inside. Just take that brush handle apart, put the brush inside a trash bag, make a small hole in the bottom of the bag, tape the bag with the brush to the open bottom of the chimney, add the needed brush handle components and brush away. Creosote also stays IN THE BAG! Also, I saw this hint years ago and it works. When You have a good hot fire going, several time a year, throw an aluminum can in the stove. This will take care of a lot of creosote. Causes some kind of mystery (to me) reaction. As far as I know, chimney must be stainless

My family still has the Sierra Nevada cabin my grandfather built in 1947, and it has an ancient Jotul wood stove. Seeing this video inspired me to take it apart, which was when I discovered it was a Jotul! I found that the original ceramic chimney really should be replaced due to cracks and a dangerous amount of buildup. I'm now obsessed with getting a new replacement Jotul, maybe an F500, but I'm not optimistic about getting my cousins to pay up for their part of it. Love the channel, and eagerly awaiting your return from Alaska.

I get so excited on Friday morning because I know you are going to post a new video. Thanks for that, Shawn. I enjoy your videos many, many times. I just love the sleek look of the new stove. What pleasant people to work with who helped you get it in place. Merry Ann from Minnesota
