1, 3 and 7 are my absolute favourites. I loved Wes Craven using Dario Argento's sense of fantasy and atmosphere. It's all there. The fantasy and alter egos sequences are so exciting in part 3 too. Heather was the best there ever was, the ultimate fastidious lead and losing her in 3 broke me. One of the saddest moments of all time. So great to see her in 7 and taking Freddy on again with a well thought out premise. Bringing her back will be the mother of all epic moments in horror. We love you Heather!

- 39:26 Jackie Earle Haley just reprised his role from _Little Children_ (2006), except this time, his character's actually guilty. - The "motive" wasn't new to the remake, it was first introduced way back in 1989 in a season-two episode of _Freddy's Nightmares,_ just after _Dream Child_ came out.

Well done for covering this series! It's sad this franchise is almost completely forgotten these days while all the other horror franchises are getting revivals. I also really like you have highlighted the positives of 4, it is my personal favourite in the series and I think it is criminally underrated, it is just a feel-good uplifting film (even though it is horror), and it really is the peak of the franchise. 4 and 5 are both criminally underrated entires that really enriched and closed the lore for the saga. In terms of consistency NOES series doesn't get enough credit for its quality, as Scream is often regarded as the one horror franchise that is good throughout and now everyone talks about it, but NOES is a good contender with not a single boring installment even though the quality may vary, and now it is basically forgotten.

Interesting ranking! Mine is: 1) A Nightmare on Elm Street 2) A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors 3) New Nightmare 4) A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) 5) A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master 6) A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Child 7) A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge 8) Freddy vs Jason 9) Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare However, I did watch most of them at the time in close succession, having only seen 1, 2 + the remake prior to that. I feel like if I rewatched them all, some of these would change, maybe 2 coming higher and the remake definitely going lower. I think I rate the remake further up because it really truly scared me, seeing it at the cinema. I used to be deathly scared of Freddy Krueger as a kid so I'm not surprised it got to me so much. But yeah, would be interesting to see it on a rewatch!

I think the remake was my favourite. I have always linked NOEM to LHOTL with the similarity to anatagonists name. The traps in the house etc. In regards to a sequel to the reboot. This is the idea of have thought about a lot. Chapter One: Unveiling the Haunting Shadows The town of Springwood is plagued by a spectral affliction, haunting children's dreams. Media sensationalism surrounds the tales of Freddy Krueger's return and the possessed girl at the center of the nightmare storm. Chapter Two: The Colliding Nightmares Freddy Krueger faces an existential crisis as he ventures into the possessed girl's dreamscape. He questions the purpose of his cinematic portrayal, blurring the lines between his on-screen terror and his tormented past. Chapter Three: Shadows in the Cave of Dreams Plato's Cave analogy unfurls within the dreamscape, a labyrinth of illusory shadows obscuring truth. Freddy grapples with deciphering the authenticity hidden within the spectral illusions. Chapter Four: The Haunting Dilemma The dilemma persists-a maze of trauma, distorted realities, and societal desensitization. Freddy's existential crisis echoes the possessed girl's anguish, reflecting society's obsession with sensationalized suffering. Chapter Five: The Claustrophobic Abyss The dreamscape tightens its grip, suffocating Freddy and the girl. Vulnerability emerges-an authentic display of fear, anger, grief, and shame-a raw exposure of their unhealed wounds. Chapter Six: The Confrontation of Tormented Souls Vulnerability becomes their shared reality-an intimate dance of raw emotions and unspoken trauma. Their gazes lock in a chilling exchange, blurring the lines between assailant and victim. Chapter Seven: The Vengeance Unleashed Tension peaks as suffocating vulnerability erupts into a tempest of vengeance. Freddy and the girl battle with ferocity, each strike resonating with echoes of their shared pain-a haunting symphony of emotions. Chapter Eight: The Resolution The aftermath reveals an allegory intertwined with Marxist ideologies and societal concepts. Their battle mirrors societal class struggle, representing a dysfunctional societal structure. The resolution calls for unity and collaboration, transcending the oppressor-oppressed paradigm towards societal harmony and evolution. This summary encapsulates the haunting narrative journey that navigates trauma, societal critiques, existential crises, and the allegorical reflection of societal structures, culminating in a call for transformative societal change.

I always thought these movies were smarter than other horror franchises and more than people give them credit for. Of course the quality of the films varied over time and it probably didn't help that Freddy became more of a joker as time went on, but the first few in particular did a really good job as metaphors for trauma, mental illness, and the realization as you grow up that your parents are flawed just like everyone else. I also really like the tone of the first three as it's much darker than most slashers,even to the point of being depressing,like their nightmares are merely a reflection of their sad realities.

First of all, great video and good job! Second, I think the reason the nightmare franchise has kind of stalled out is mostly because of the fans. They just refuse to see anyone besides Robert Englund as Krueger.
@valeriebreidenstein83625 ай бұрын
That's actually true. That's also why the Remake got so much hate (even more than NOES 5 & 6), just because JEH played Freddy instead of Robert Englund. It got so much review bombing just because of that one thing. JEH did a great performance with what he had to work with, it's not his fault that hardcore fans didn't like the movie, but those fans do as if it is partly his fault, just because he got the role of Freddy, because Robert Englund retired from the franchise because of his age

Epic video, Emma! I know how much work you put into this but it's really paid off and I found it very insightful in how you explored the themes, especially teen trauma. Totally agree with your ranking of the top 4 (the unequivocally good ones imo) and good to see Part 2 championed for it's quirky take on teen sexual awakenings; I've always had a soft spot for it. The author's intentions were unknown to me and loved how you dealt with that.

At the end of Dream Warriors Kristen promised to use her power to dream Nancy "into a beautiful dream, forever and ever" I always really liked the idea of Nancy existing as a good version of Freddy and teaching future kids to unlock their dream abilities to fight him. They did this a little bit in some of the Elm Street comics in 1991, though they never really fleshed it out that much, but I think there could be some nice imagery there by having the famous Elm Street house shown in the decrepit Freddy-fied version we see in the sequels from 3 onwards, to a beautiful, idealised version of it that is a sanctuary for a new generation of Dream Warriors, presided over by Nancy. That's how I would bring Heather Langenkamp back anyway! It might be a bit too convoluted and bamboozling for new/younger audiences though and I can see them probably just wanting to go with a simple back to basics approach instead like Scream 5 and Halloween 2018. Great ranking video, I love how in depth you got with each movie! My list would be almost the same as yours but I'd have Dream Warriors at number 2 and bump New Nightmare down to 3.
@honesto4696 Жыл бұрын
I genuinely love that idea. She would've been a great addition to part 4, where in death she could mentor Alice, as she becomes the Dream Master and provide some necessary exposition. Such as why there is a Dream Master, why wasn't there a Dream Master before Alice and maybe a better explanation as to how Krueger became a member of the undead, than what Freddy's Dead (ANOES 6) gave us?

Freddy’s Dead I watched the original films as a kid at my friends and this was few years before I saw my first Friday the 13th or Halloween, so Freddy was one of the first horror icons I remember next to Ghostface and Chucky

Very interesting! You put NOES 2010 higher than a New Nightmare, that's a take I haven't ever seen before!
@BrandontheBeldam29932 жыл бұрын
@@martinag3341 Yeah the reason being: New Nightmare for a concept is Very Original and the meta slasher has been done before the 90s. But this idea that Wes had for Freddy in the real world, its so different and yet so creative and it takes Freddy back to a Darker place after the emasculation of his terror in Freddy's Dead. Again, my opinion, Freddy was always his scariest in his first few films. New Nightmare. I think the last third of the film when the Entity is fully unleashed is the best part. The first hour or so isn't bad, just a bit slow, I said it feels like a Lifetime movie that Freddy Krueger invaded. Its not a bad movie, its just one of my least favorites, but I can watch it fine. As for Nightmare 2010, I understand most fans don't like the direction they went with Freddy's origin in this version, but it Is SO much darker and twisted and something we hadn't seen from Freddy in years. Jackie Haley said this film was more 'grounded' in reality with the nightmares and I can agree with that, it just sucks when they blatantly copy shots from the original that look TERRIBLE in comparison. I would never put the remake above the original, but there are elements about I do like. for instance the micronaps were a cool idea and Kyle Gallner and Katie Cassidy were both great as well. I hate how Jackie's makeup looked though, they were going for a serious 'burn victim' look, but thought it was too disturbing so he ended up looking like a burned Navi. As acting goes, he made a pretty solid Freddy.

It's always entertaining to see people's reactions and thoughts on horror films. But I can especially appreciate one where the host takes the time to learn and inform their audience. There are so many that I've seen that have watched horror films but do not know the history and inspiration behind them. That's one thing I've always been fascinated about and also took the time to learn more about the horror films I watched instead of just watching the films alone. And going even beyond that I've become a bit of a horror art collector having purchased several various replicas from my most favorite horror films growing up along with some new age horror films. And also visiting some of the filming locations as well. I've visited what's become known as the "Freddy house" and some of the A Nightmare on Elm St. locations just a few years ago. Anyone that has never been there I urge you to go and check it out if you can. Still about looks the same from the outside as it did in 1984!

I actually really love the 2010 remake. No idea why it gets so much hate. The original was great, but the sequels were cheesy and went so far into comedy it's hard for me to find any of them scary. The remake brought the horror back to Freddy and Jackie was truly terrifying as him. I'd probably rank it 2nd only behind the original.
@valeriebreidenstein83625 ай бұрын
Same here. Comedic Freddy just isn't scary at all and he began to look like someone dumped a cheese pizza onto his head😂. And the sequels after 3 were mostly just bad. I really like the Remake as well. Freddy was scary af (his more realistic look made him far more creepy than pizzaface Freddy), the Dreams and real world blending into each other so well that you never knew if it was real or if it was a dream until it was already too late for the one dreaming. Also the characters were far more likeable than in many of the movies (this includes Tina's bf in the OG) (except for Roony's Nancy of course) and the cast gave their best for a good and realistic performance (Dean's actor actually stayed awake for three days straight to get into character), they actually looked tired after tons of nights full of nightmares (Roony not trying for a good performance actually worked out to let Nancy look tired and bored af). Some things may have been bad or could have been done better, but overall it is a solid NOES movie and it's totally underrated, just because it is not the OG Freddy.

Thank you for inspiring me to rewatch the 2010 remake. I still didn't like it, but I haven't watched it since middle school when my critique of it was "not the original, so it's bad". I still think it is bad, I'm happy to have watched it to form more adult critiques and opinions. I have a lot I could say about it. Mostly I agree with your views of the remake, adding that I don't like how they write Freddie's dialogue. It seems the writers didn't consider the more serious subject matter they were writing for and tried to give Freddy the same comedic quips. There the times the actor says these lines that feel like they were written to be comedic but he delivers them with a serious tone, which doesn't feel right for the line, and the times he delivers them comedically which doesn't feel right for the subject. I am not a fan of the dialogue at all. And overall the writing feels like they had a half ass idea, but lacked the creativity to fully flesh it out. So they needed to rely on easter eggs and gimmicks of an already existing movie. It didn't do much besides change a core aspect of the main villain to fit a story they were unsuccessful in telling

Really great breakdown. New nightmare is number 1 for me. Watched that so many times when I was a teenager along with Freddy's dead lol

You can tell how much work you put into this video, Emma! Fantastic! 1 and New Nightmare are my favorite, but 2 is an iconic gay horror movie and holds a special place in my heart

Great job on the video, Emma. A wonderful deep dive into the Elm Street series and I think most fans will agree that the top three films are the ones featuring Nancy. I may have a slight debate on a couple of lower rankings, but those are simply personal choices. The only film I feel I need to mention is Nightmare On Elm Street 2. While I did not pick up on the gay themes within the film, I was a teenager when the film came out. I was that awkward kid with strict parents and no girlfriend. Of course, I got teased and bullied about "not liking girls" (which wasn't true) and you know how high school gossip spreads. In the end, I thought that Lisa's love for Jesse was the power of love over hate. I'm not saying that Part 2 cannot be interpreted in different ways. That's just how I remember the film affecting me at the time.

Great video! Lol and I love Freddy's dead even though I know it's bad. It was the first 3D movie I ever saw and I was only 12 when it came out so even more exciting and awesome. It will always hold a special place in my black heart.
