Just keep talking while you're creating. Why? For myself, your conversations, for one, gives us an insight into your creative proses. Why this color or that, what does a painting need and why. Most importantly, you show that we should not be afraid to paint! As you say, "let's just do it and see what happens".

Hi Stuart. You reawoke my love of oils. It has been many years since I painted in oils. This is the 3rd or 4th video I have watched of yours and I'm thoroughly enjoying watching you and learning how your mind works and putting it into your art. You make it look so effortless. It won't be for me. 😅 You encouraged me to go spend $150 on oil supplies. So I gave them to put them to good use now. Thank you so much for sharing your amazing skills. ❤

I vote for silence over music. I am transfixed by the visuals and don't even notice if you happen to go silent for a few moments. The whole thing is an organic experience and the audio meshes energetically with the visuals in a natural way that makes me feel like I am there in your studio. Film making is another talent you have.

Thank you! I had to break this video into 2 days--so all day long today I was thinking how wonderful it was that I had your second-part to look forward to! The change of the painting was like reading a novel that has a sudden surprise turn of subject in it: disconcerting and exciting! I would vote for no music, the silent parts are fine with me. The discussions I find the most engaging are when you are just thinking aloud about what you are going to do and why you are making the decisions to paint what you are doing. Those may seem obvious to you, but to someone who is not used to painting landscapes hearing how you are thinking about the painting is really valuable information. Again, thank you so much for these videos!

Stuart you paint at your pace. Time is of the essence when making videos, I believe. As for the old adage, it goes like this: "Red Sky, at night, Shepherds delight. Red Sky, in the morning, Shepherds Warning!!" As a reader of the skies, I thought you would remember that. Generally though, it is a note observanle by country folk, Like myself. Incidentally Stuart. I find it quite soothing. In the United States, there’s a wide variety of accents, ranging from the Southern drawl to the distinct Boston accent. By contrast, the English accent tends to be more consistent. However, I think what makes it stand out most is simply that it’s different than anything here in the U.S.

I've had some problems also drying. One dry, another not. It could be, if I remember right, under the paint, was previous dryed paint. Some canvasses would stay sticky for months. ( not good with pussycat fluff) I couldn't figure it. Some I'd glaze, & the glaze would bead up. Spirits with a drop of dishwasher detergent seemed to solve that. I'm adding what was called Japan dryer years ago. A purplish brown liquid. Cobalt?Just a drop or two mixed in. Black, white & crimson are the colors that stayed wet for some reason. *I watch you paint, music not necessary for me. * I mentioned a material called tyvex. I got a piece. Put oil on it, it worked great i.m.o. but it was plastic backed. Original has no plastic back. It takes paint just fine. It'll last maybe longer than canvas. It was once affordable. Now the price is comparable to canvas! It comes very wide though. I've seen around 4 meters wide by roll length?

In my own work, I am trying to learn to see when "it is convincing" and to stop there. You see it so quickly, but it is taking me a while to be able to see that. I think trying to expose myself to many photos of landscape paintings has helped me to begin to see the landscape in my paint marks, and not ruin something that looked "convincing".

Stuart, I’m an old retired printer. Lithographic and letterpress inks are virtually the same as artists oil paint. To ensure and speed up drying, we used two driers. One was liquid cobalt drier and the other one was paste drier. The cobalt was a surface drier, while the paste drier tended to dry evenly throughout the ink film. Inks and paints use several mechanisms to dry. Evaporation, oxidation and absorption. Ink printed on newsprint for example virtually dries by absorption. Solvent based liquid inks used on plastic film virtually dry through evaporation. Lithographic oil based inks often employ all the drying mechanisms that I mentioned. You could probably buy some paste driers from a printing ink supplier. I believe that many years ago boiled linseed oil also assisted drying. Hope this ramble helps. PS. Only use a very small quantity of drier.

Be sure you're using a linseed oil based Titanium. Safflower and Sunflower Titanium whites take forever to dry, and evidence is mounting among conservators regarding the weakness of the paint film with those latter drying oils. A big fuss is made about linseed oil yellowing, but as long as your painting isn't kept in darkness for years, the yellowing can be reversed by allowing sunlight to bleach it back to the original color through a sun facing window.

Great cliff! Don't think you need to speed up, slow down or add music when your not talking. Quiet time is fine. I'd also love to see a video, could be a short, on varnishing one of your paintings. High gloss? Satin? How do you keep the brush strokes from showing or competing with the existing in the painting? Thanks!

I always use high gloss varnish. The trick to avoid brush marks is to work fast and try not to go over the same spot more than twice, and don't fiddle with it.

Strange about the paint not drying. I wonder if it is certain tubes. I just bought some Lefranc titanium white but I have only used a little of it and have not noticed any problems. I have been using Winton titanium white with no problem. I bought a tube of Lefranc Naples yellow hue that seemed to also not dry and also had problems sticking to the canvas for some reason, so it might just be certain tubes.
