How can Israelis and Palestinians achieve peace? Palestinian peacemaker Aziz Abu Sarah and Israeli peacemaker Maoz Inon discuss the immeasurable tragedies they've experienced growing up in the region - and how they choose reconciliation over revenge, again and again. With a fierce belief in a better future, they talk about conflict, safety, finding shared values and how they're building a coalition of Israeli and Palestinian citizens who are intent on creating a path to hope and peace.

This may sound semantic but it is a incredibly necessary distinction. Compromise will get us nowhere because there is a vastly negative zone of potential agreement, the two sides are way to far apart. However i believe collaboration is possible if started from the Palestinian side and by starting with agreed upon structures that punish competing behaviour from either side.

You do need both sides to want peace, forcing it is impossible... when you have terrorists like Hamas, and when 70% of Palestinians support Hamas (so polls tell), how can you make it peace? Its nothing but a wet dream unfortunately, they will never change, they live in an extremely toxic society, where if you talk about peace it endangers your family (arabs who condemned Hamas acts on 7th of October told while interviewed, that their family gets death threats from other arabs). Where if you are a girl and you come home "too late" your brothers will literally hit you to death (they really killed her). This is the sad truth about most arabs in Israel...

As a Palestinian and Lebanese woman, I pray for peace everyday. We are brothers and sisters in the Middle East, we should not be killing each other. I have cousins still in the Middle East, some Jewish, some Muslim, and some of us are Orthodox Christians. There is such beauty in all three religions. There is such beauty in both Israel and Palestine. In all middle eastern countries. The world already looks at us as terrorists or other derogatory terms, why should we treat each other the same?

@@dpboy8315 There is a difference between a palestinian state and the Ottoman empire. You are mixing things up and is not a good start for talking peace. Yes, they use to get along and yes, the Ottoman empire was good for jews if you compared to other situations, like the inquisition in Spain. The Ottoman empire does not exist for more than 100 years. Jews also ruled there for a long time, and I am not talking religion here, although it played a very important role in the 3 religions. So, where do you draw the line? 100 years? 900 years? 2000 years. Jews always sang about the return to Jerusalem. Not for 1 year, not for 100 years but for 3000 years. If the conflict was easy to solve, it would be solved by now. I do respect this two gentelmen for there effort and I hope their wishes come thrue. Is not gonna be easy and I believe that religion should left aside. No chosen people, no muhamad's teachings on the table in this case. Just to think with love and respect, searching for real peace. Not easy though.

This conversation is extremely dangerous. Palestinian people deserve the right to self-determination, the right for refugees to return, the end to the seize of Palestinian land and settlements, the end of the horrible siege and blockade on Gaza and the intentional starvation, the end to the constant mowing the lawn campaigns, the intentional targeting of civilians including my, at the time, 12 year old friend in Jerusalem. The only sympathy the Palestinian people ever get is that of them being the "perfect victims". Do you only have solidarity with Palestinians if they allow themselves to be brutalized by the occupation without ever being able to resist or fight back? Are you in solidarity with the Palestinian people and their struggle, or merely a sympathetic witness to their brutalization and slaughter? People can dilly dally and try to spread fake sympathies but that will never move us forward. Real justice is a requirement. We must reject conditional solidarity. We reject those who want us to make our rhetoric and suffering more palatable to feel better about themselves.

@@dpboy8315 That's just completely detached from actual history. Muslims colonized the land, destroyed synagogues and Jewish temples, and many Muslim and Ottomans rulers oppressed them. Under the rule of Islam Jews had no rights and had to pay the Jizya. Jews and Arabs did not live in peace in Israel in many occasions throughout history - For instance: The looting of Safed, the Hebron Massacre, the Palestine riots, etc... In addition, Jews were persecuted and ethnically cleansed in a series of pogroms and government sanctions in most Muslim countries in the 20th century, especially in Iraq following the Farhud Pogrom in the 40s. Unfortunately, history does not change according to different narratives. From the Dawn of Islam, Jews were massacred by Muslims, which are not even native to the land.

That their anger can be directed for to a common cause and not at eachother? And if that is the goal of the conversation the why would it be more Important to have these men risk their lives to have a hard conversation that may possibly never be heard by the masses and the people who need to hear it if had in a hot zone for conflict? Peace has to start somewhere and while it would be a huge step to be able to have this conversation in other places maybe the huge step isn't always the right beginning, but rather doing what can be done safely is more important to achieving the goal of peace.

End the occupation and oppression, then you won't have "extremism". Extremism is the result of extreme unjust settler policies. It is a natural response of a dignified people. To reduce it to "ideology" is to dehumanise these people and their legitimate demands. When words like "Extremism" and "Terrorism" are used in the west, it is never used to describe Jews or white people. Only brown people. Why? Understand that this is racism and unlearn it.

I love that they’re seeking peace. They seem like genuinely good and well spoken people. The only thing I will say, just on behalf of the majority of the world who can’t even fathom how gruesome the Holocaust was- do NOT compare that to Nakba. However you view the Holocaust, I guarantee you it was at least fifty times worse then you imagined it.
@stigersh
@stigersh 13 күн бұрын
The point is not comparing suffering (and I definitely know the scale of the holocaust..). The point is acknowledging all suffering, empathy for all suffering and looking forward to a free future with a vision for peace and not revenge. A future without violence. For that hostages should get back to their homes, bombs should stop falling on both sides, education should be non-violent. Currently these problems are attempted to be solved with fear and violence, can there be an alternative? I hope so. But currently every passing day the hostages are still there, people are still getting killed and educated for hatred.
4 күн бұрын
@@stigersh You’re right, I agree. I pointed that out because so many people are comparing this Gaza war to the genocide of the Holocaust, and that really angers me, having met people who have thank G-d survived it. It’s like saying “England had less people killed during WWII, so we need to all pity and support the Germans”. Honestly? I feel like this is a problem where people have to understand that violence is the key to peace- until Hamas is gone, people are going to be affected from both sides. The only way to defeat them is violence- they literally harm their OWN people! And I don’t think Palestinian protestors realize how much they are promoting what they are protesting against. The money sent to Gaza usually goes to Sinwar’s luxurious estates. Anyone who wants peace- and this includes all the people who are standing up for black lives, for LGBTQ+ as well, all of them who are supporting it all- Hamas would gladly kill them if they had the opportunity. This is how those people raise their kids. I moved to Israel from the US because of anti semitism, and people here have grown so accustomed to air raid sirens and terrorists attacks. A few months ago, five minutes before my friend arrived at the bus stop she takes to go home, a 13 year old kid had started a terrorist attack. She saw shooting, dead bodies, etc. Sorry, but sometimes, when all they see is red, peace won’t solve anything, they’ll just start up again. Hamas, and certain Gazan people ,don’t define Islam- Hamas are a different category altogether. People don’t act like that. It’s sick. They’re animals- and you can’t calm animals by discussing peaceful treaties.

Civil rights are almost non existent in Palestinian territories, the education system promotes martyrdom and Jews can't safely live as a minority in Palestinian territories, unless it's in protected enclaves. Meanwhile, millions of Palestinian Arabs live in Israel as equal citizens and civil rights are respected. Until West Bank/Gaza become de-radicalized, this talk will stay just that - a talk.

Just for the record, there are hardly any Samaritans (only 800 in the world) and with the next 3 they have always lived in this area. Only from 4th place downwards (not really, you will even see Yemenis and Saudis in the gene table before you see anything about Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews) are mentioned as the real Israelis in Israel, with Ashkenazi Jews being preferred of course, but as I said these are even further down... Aziz, Maoz- I pray, hope, and beg anyone who listens to you to believe in this message. This is what the world needs, and it is NOT exclusive to Israel/Palestine. This is human nature. Hatred is a strong emotion, and stronger yet when we are see and feeling ourselves and our families oppressed and hurt. But we can overcome this part of human nature. We can belive in a better tomorrow. We can believe in peace through discussion, learning, analysis, understanding. From the bottom of my heart, continue forward, and Godspeed.

Two really lovely, wonderful souls in dialogue, and it would be my prayer that they and people like them take leadership roles among their peoples. However, with that said, it is my experience hearing from Israelis and Palestinians first-hand that these wise and reasonable people are outliers in their communities. This might have been a more impactful conversation to me with representatives who acknowledged not just anger and hurt - but their own reluctance to engage and distrust of the other - and how they were working to get over those hurdles. These two professing love for each other is wonderful, but I think it somewhat whitewashes the problem.

Totally agree, Pal, but this is just a start - thin edge of a wedge towards peace. In serious conflict resolution you have to get together the people who are NOT motivated towards peace, and see if they can be transformed through dialogue, engagement, etc. There is an awesome story about a black guy in the American south who listened to Ku Klux Klan members, and one by one managed to transform about 100 of them from their extreme racism.

@@worldwithoutwar8622 I know this KKK story, yes. I hope these guys and their movement works. I'm a fan of Combatants for Peace as well. There are a bunch of these dialogue groups. They are a force for good absolutely. I just think this particular video tends to discount the real challenges that I have seen first-hand in getting these groups to talk with each other. It's now worse than it was, not getting better. I support this kind of work, but I think this video, while certainly well-intended, may give the impression to the uninitiated/general public that the problem is simpler than it actually is. So I agree with you, but there are issues here beyond just respect and 'getting along.'

@@craigweisz Thanks Craig. I know!!! The challenges are higher than the highest mountain, and especially now. This is all just a small molecule of hope . . . but it has to be represented, shown, as a possibility.

No talking over each other, arguing or any interruption between the two people, these are the kind of adult conversations needed around these issues, regardless of how angry people are, both sides need to LISTEN to each other

Fascinating. If only people could see the bravery of these two advocates for peace. What a different world it would be if enough people saw these two as heroes, as incredibly strong and brave.

All of this is beautiful and hopeful, but as long as the USA want chaos in the Middle East for economic purposes (mainly oil), peace won't happen in Israel-Palestine. These 2 societies have been broken so hard they need to be rebuilt from scratch, which won't happen without the USA's approval and true intent.

This is so beautiful and what our “leaders” SHOULD be doing. If they did engage with one another in a compassionate and caring way, these conversations would not be necessary because the conflict would not exist. The true issue is the desire for power and greed at the expense of human lives. It’s time to stop resorting to war and replace blind hatred with compassion, empathy, and love. I remain hopeful and optimistic that this will be reality in my lifetime ❤

Now this is beautiful. To forgive and find peace with in yourself. Israel and Palestine need to find that peace. So all can live happily.

Laying down hatred and anger, aiming for coexistence. There would be no peace with either party wanting to get rid of each other's existence on the land. Coexistence is the way to go. To coexist, Both parties need to lay down anger and hatred. They have got jobs to do.
