What first made me fall in love with the Omega Speedmaster?
My recent review of the 2021 Speedmaster explained my dwindling obsession with collecting these watches, but today’s video delves into my original honeymoon phase with the Speedy, and why it initially caught my eye.
Join me for a unique look at watchmaking and watch collecting through the lens of intelligent design, men’s style, and fantastic filmmaking, featuring the underrated 2010 thriller The American, Hollywood superstar George Clooney, and a few nods to the forever iconic James Bond.

I watch the Urban Gentry channel since about 4 years now. You taught me a lot about watches and horology. I started my journey with Vostok Amphibia watches, both vintage and new. I bought a Speedmaster last year and wore it everyday for a year. I think of the Speedmaster as this space tool with a rich history. While the brand new Yema Pearldiver (a new model, a new watch) has no history yet and has not been associated with anything. So that, I can feel the giants of the past with the Speedy, like the shadow of James Bond with the Seamaster, but a blank page with the Pearldiver. The Vostok watches remind me of the Soviet Union, the Cold War and the 20th Century. The watches I love to wear live with me, on my daily normal life as well as when I go hiking, camping, swimming. Every mountain I climbed, the Speedy was on, by -20 Celsius on a frozen lake, in the wind on a mountaintop, in the blizzard on the hill I walk on many times a week, year round. The Speedy times the hike, tells the time and always keeps running wherever I venture and explore. To which, the Pearldiver will take on for all water related activities, canoeing a river downstream, or tanning by the lake. Watches are a refinement deeply interconnected with movies, mechanically speaking they are very close to the camera that puts images on film, or the beautiful cars riding sinuous roads. Keep on doing videos like this one TGV.

I consider it to be a 'companion piece' of sorts to John Frankenheimers 'Ronin'. They could very well exist in the same time and place and both tell us a similar story in a similar manner. If you haven't seen either, do yourself a favour, as they say. If you've seen both, this comment will likely make more sense!

Chronograph watches never been a favorite of mine. This is the brief story of how I got my first one. At the beginning of April, I visited an Omega boutique to see what they had on display, with no thoughts of buying anything, just "'window shopping". As soon as I entered, I asked for the new 2021 Speedmaster (3861). The sales lady told me, " we only have one left, the one with the Sapphire glass." My response was: Ok, let me try it on. After she brought it out and showed it to me, I went into a state of awe. The design, the details of the dial, the looks of the movement on the back, how comfortable it was on my wrist, the iconic status, the heritage and what impressed me the most, the specifications of the time piece. I caved in. After the adrenalin rush worn off, I thought I was going to regret the purchase. Still waiting for that thought. No regrets on my new adquisition.

I became obsessed with the Speedy after watching that movie years ago!!! I had no idea of it’s long history before that time, but man did I go down the rabbit hole after that. How did I wind up with my fave chrono? The old fashioned way - it stopped me in my tracks as I was walking past a store's display case! This was before on-line buying was even a thing and it's still ticking away nicely. : ) In this age of super-convenient and high information on-line buying (which I do enjoy to be sure), I hope we don't ever completely lose that thrill of love at first in-person site watch encounters.

The first time I saw a speedmaster, it was on a colleague's wrist and back then I didn't know anything about watches. But I knew the watch my colleague was wearing was a killer watch. I was immediately attracted by the contrast and the busy dial. I remember peeking regularly at his wrist to spot the brand. I was in love and I still am.

Oh my God. It feels like I’ve found a long lost soul mate! The American marks among my all time favourite films. Every now and then I pull out the blueray disc and give it another watch. There is something about the scenery, the Italian landscape and the brooding atmosphere that is very appealing to me. I have also read the book by Martin Booth several times - his writing style is pure class. And of course how can we forget about the speedy. I can’t count the number of times that I’ve paused the movie at that specific moment only so that I can admire Jack’s watch. The same watch that I’m proud to own. Thank you TGV for mentioning this wonderful film.

I believe the omega speedmaster is somewhat subdued and although busy, has now become part of the back drop of every day norm. That's part of the charm of this piece, it's a chameleon that keeps on changing its presence in various situations. I have yet to own one due to budget, however look forward to the day i can open the box and admire all of its characteristics. Thanks for Sharing!

The Speedmaster is certainly the most iconic chronograph, and IMHO, the most iconic watch of all time. A watch that represents mankind's most inspiring achievement to date. For my personal collection I went with the Speedmaster Apollo 8. It's a somewhat large watch, but thankfully I have large wrists, allowing me to experience one of the most well thought through special editions of the Speedmaster, with it's breathtaking movement and beautiful color scheme.

Anyone who grew up in Europe in the 70's, 80's who loves Formula One and other motor racing will know why I am a Tag Heuer fan. That Classic icon on TV showing the lap times of the drivers, the split second markers and qualifying times. Tag Heuer was inseparable from F1. One of the reasons I got into watches was the desire to someday own a genuine Tag Heuer Monaco or Monza. Monza has always been my favorite, the old track, the banked curves, the 60’s movie Grand Prix, and races from the 50's through to modern F1 races. The best racing cars ever built screaming through the Variante Ascari and flying around the Parabolica at 200 mph. I like watches that have a great history behind them, and its usually history of things that I'm particularly interested in. I like the original 1976 Monza Calibre 15 (Lauda Ferrari tribute), but also like the later releases. The Calibre 36 and then the rereleases in 2000 are beautiful. But in 2016 when Tag Heuer released the most recent (and final?) version of the Monza I knew it would not be long until it was in my collection. Today it is my favorite watch within a modest collection.

Oh TGV, I feel like you made this video for me. My parents immigrated to the U.S. in the mid-1950's from Introdaqua Italy, just outside of Sulmona, where "The much of "The American" was filmed. Obviously, my family LOVES that movie. My father bought a mechanical Omega with a 611 movement shortly after he came to America and he told me that watch made made him feel like a millionaire. It was the only watch he ever wore, and now I have it. I have been collecting watches for quite sometime but I recently decided sell watches I don't wear and buy a Speedy. So now I have an Aqua Terra, Railmaster, Speedmaster, and Junghans Max Bill. I am going to watch "The American" now an plan my next trip back to Italy to visit my cousins. Have a great day TGV!

July 20, 1969 I was a 15 year old kid watching the moon landing on TV. Naturally, I became interested in anything related to Apollo 11. I didn't know anything about Omega Speedmaster back then but when I found out about the watch I wanted one. Fast forward and I'm watching your video wearing my Speedy Pro 1861 hesalite. Great video and have been a long follower of this channel since the first one I watched - which was probably the Roosevelt Island outing video back in the days. I have a Speedmaster Moonwatch 3570.50 from 2010, coincidently the year this movie was made (I think?). This replaced the 3520.50 Speedmaster Auto Triple date which I wore for 15 years as a one watch guy before I traded it. Still think that was kind of a mistake when I think about it now, but letting that watch go for funds to get another, opened up my journey down this rabbit hole of the watch world. Always missing it after that, I became obsessed with finding my next Speedie. I’m glad I have my Speedie now, and watching this video made me want to rewatch the movie to relive those moments seeing the Speedy on Clooney’s wrist. Cheers.

I purchased the latest model the day it arrived in Australia, it's actually the first watch over $20 I've ever owned (my other being a well-worn 20 year old Timex from Target)... So a big jump. But I'd spent all of lockdown 2020 just poring over watches, knowing I wanted to start collecting. Even with a relatively small female wrist, this watch is a dream and I smile every time I look at it... it has been my daily wear since January, it's extremely comfortable. For me it was just the look of it initially, the styling is very much my taste... but I now love my little ritual of winding it up over my first morning coffee and just watching the movement through the case back.

Having served as a Soldier for over 30 years a watch becomes an essential and foundational piece of equipment for any military operation/activity. Almost immediately after joining the US Army I became fascinated by watches in general, particularly their uses in the field and on deployments. The more I studied and expanded my interest the more I was drawn to Omegas and the Speedmaster in general. Its simple elegance, quality, and historical significance is impossible to ignore. Tragically, no one joins the military to get rich so it was always a distant dream but I finally purchased one this year and I'm simply overwhelmed by how it makes me feel and the sense of satisfaction of owning something of such sheer elegance.

In that time, I spent most of the day being sucked into the rabbit hole which is the Speedmaster (and even the Moonswatch). What makes me colkect the Speedmaster? Growing up with Space as the Final Frontier, where no one has gone before, the Apollo missions inspired me for most of my time growing up. I respected the engineers and strategic planners who made contingency plans in case of system failures and disasters. The intentional choice for a mechanical winding watch was to me a forward thinking decision. With the unknown in front of them, from power failures to EMP bursts, the decision to have a tool that overcomes those issues was, to me, very admirable. Even for the coming Mars mission, a battery powered watch would not be advisable (carry spare batteries just in case? Do a battery maintenance in zero gravity?) To me Apollo 11 & 13 was the defining moment for my love for the Speedmaster. Not the moonwalk, but the fact Neil’s Speedy was used as the replacement timer for the mission, defining Speedmaster as the reliable backup & lifesaving tool for space travel.

I love watching your content! Have been for a long time. I have a general rule of buying watches. The moment I see it, it has to make me smile. Particularly the first time I see it. When I first saw the speedy in person it did just that. However it was the crystal one that for some unexplained reason made me smile. I wanted to buy the hesalite to be part of the pure club, but couldn’t pull the trigger. So I waited. It just didn’t make me smile the same way. I spent a couple of years thinking about the moon watch, and then finally I went to see it again in person and the crystal version made me smile again. So I bought it. The more I wear it, the more I like it. It’s hard to understand why. But the watch has a personality. It grows on you as you share special or even mundane moments together. It’s as if it has a heartbeat, and every time you power it, you give it life.

@@zman8340 John Wick can do it with the Bucherer Manero Autodate with 3atm water resistance. 😂😂😂Just kidding, of course the Seamaster makes perfect sense for a former commander in the Royal Navy and MI6 agent, but as far as I get it in beginning of No Time To Die Bond is retired, so I was hoping for a little twist regarding his choice of wristwatch.😉 Like when we had the Aqua Terra on screen.

The Speedmaster‘s second hand just… made me fall in love with it. It just has that kinda something to it. I don’t know if i make sense, but it just plays with my heart in a good way. And also because i am a space and history enthusiast, i really would love to own it. Great as always, TGV!

Beautiful intro! (Yet again) I love the Speedmaster. Didn’t buy it as my first luxury watch because of the manual wind (and I know myself I will forget) but now I’m seriously considering one as the next buy. Will need to save up first. Fantastic link to “The American”. For me it was “Apollo 13 “ where I first saw the Speedmaster to be honest. Thanks for this relaxing video.

Another great video TGV. Your edits are getting better and better as well! I think the speedmaster is an essential part of any collection, big or small. It's a timeless part of history and space exploration. (Btw I think you should buy one of the two speedies the AD lent you LOL)

Hi T, Firstly, great show! I think that I'll have to re-watch "The American". I do not own a Speedmaster. I do own a Marloe Chronoscope Lomond. What attracted me to that watch, was firstly the design and the name Lomond, named after Loch Lomond in Scotland. It just so happens that my Mum and Dad had their Honeymoon there, and eventually where I laid my Mothers ashes to rest within the Loch. So this Chronograph watch means a whole lot more to me, than simply being a timepiece, and has since been submerged in the waters of Loch Lomond, in the actual area that her ashes were scattered. Every time I wear it, I have part of my Mum with me. Be well friend. Kind Regards Stuart

I was playing with amateur sports car racing in the 1980s and got to share some of the space near the big guys like Newman-Haas. The racing chronos were everywhere and I fell in love with all of them. Being an aerospace guy now, the Speedy is a natural attraction.

When I bought my 1969 Speedmaster (straight writing) in Rome back in 1972, I didn't have a watch. I was working as an auditor there and one of my colleagues was about to get married and was selling off some of his possessions to raise some cash. One of these was a the Speedmaster, which he had bought new. I knew next to nothing about watches in 1972 and had never seen a Speedie until then. I just took one look at the watch and the writing on the back, and I knew I had to have it. The price was right and a deal was made. I wore it continuously in those days and had it serviced for the first time in 1982 in Bahrain.. I have been living in Switzerland since 1987 and have had the watch serviced by Omega twice so far. Very attached to it and I still wear it regularly. It's grown old with me.

High quality video TGV - not just the editing, but a lot other KZbinrs could learn about the importance of a well-written script. My own chronograph crush is the Heuer Carrera. I liked the look of it first - an elegant, understanded and easy to read timepiece but came to appreciate the sporting connections and the story of how Jack Heuer created it, later on. The case is unique and beautiful (those lugs). It doesn't seem to get much of a look-in compared to the Speedy and seems to be overshadowed by the Monaco also.

Wicked intro TGV. You never fail. Stranger Things esque music? That was a spot on review of The American. I happened to see that in the theater - having watched 60s/70s French films and other classic cinema - yes, that's the style. Really, it was amazing they were still making movies like that with actors like Clooney to star in them. All is not lost.

Here's my story. I got inspired by your videos and become a watch lover. Mechanical watch is expensive, so I got my hands on a 1984 Seiko Quartz that I saw in used market. Fell in love with its Genta inspired case and washi paper dial, my taste lean towards vintage. Of course, my hunger for mechanical watch is growing stronger day by day. I like field watch and was thinking to get Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical version, obvious choice as my first mechanical watch. But then I stumbled across a beauty, love at first sight. Was it an IG ads, or youtube reviews? I forgot how I found it, just like your good friend that you can't remember how you met him in the first place. I am a student, so I save up my hard earned part time wages for it. Although it is a lot more expensive than Kahki Field, I just couldn't get it out of my mind. Preordered it and still hesitates that should I pay so much for a watch, ended up patiently waiting for 3 months. The watch came, I love it even more after seeing it in person! No regrets there, it could be my one watch collection. It is unique and refined design and proportion, charming and warm dial, tough with a touch of elegance. It is a Serica 4512 WMB. My love at first sight, my first mechanical watch. It is fate, because I luckily got my watch with serial number in 3, matches that I am the third born in my family!

Fantastic video combining film and watch culture. I loved The American for all of those reasons you have mentioned and having been to Abruzzo myself, can testify to its beautiful, unspoilt landscape, very much untouched by popular tourism, unlike Roma and the west coastline. Grazie mille!

I loved "The American" and would pause the DVD player during the wrist shots of the Speedmaster. It was then that I set a goal to own one. It took a very long time and given the cost, always a reason NOT to buy one. In the end, I bought an 1861 Speedy last year. It only took 10 years. Sheesh. I must say that I absolutely love it. It cost more than my very small collection many, many times over. After six months on wrist, I can confidently say if I could only have one watch, the Speedy would be it. Bravo TGV, on bringing together a very fine film and a brilliant watch.

Definitely good points. The speedy and sub very much share a similar reason for lasting interest. They fill a role where it’s not just pleasing aesthetically but rather an extension of a person and with historical meaning. I own one and remember wanting one after I saw a 1980s reference on someone’s wrist and then subsequently began reading up on the model and its history. At one point Costco even had one for sale and I knew I had to have it. Bought one after a promotion at work, wore it on my wedding day, and I’ll never sell it. I have other watches now but still wear it a couple times a week and switch up straps as I desire.

In an almost unbelievable coincidence, the first mention of the "Speedy" in this episode occurred at the exact moment I was reading about the Douglas A-26 and it's use of "Speedee" bombs that could skip on the water like Barnes Wallace's creations. You said Speedy and I read the word Speedee at the same time. Crazy! (ref:WarbirdTECH Volume 22 p.85)

put my speedy on a strapcode angus jubilee with ratchet and engraved the clasp. its...perfect. I lobe the crisp white indices against the black backdrop and the distortion of the crystal. Love the fact it is my only manual wind and it is very satisfying to wind up. And for those of you wondering about water resistance...I have swam with it many times, shower with it and it is just perfectly fine.
