Nathan’s biggest strength is always holding people accountable. If someone says something, as little as it may be, he goes the extra length to push them on it. Always gets them to reveal what they really mean - whether they knew that’s what they meant or not. Feigning ignorance has never been done so respectfully.

I’ve watched a lot of other video essays about The Rehearsal, and I was surprised no one went deeper into the anxiety reading of it. To me, it’s a perfect portrayal of anxiety. The replaying and replaying of an interaction in your head, or how the lead up to the interaction is sometimes the hardest, most stressful part. Was it too obvious and that’s why no one else addressed it? Idk, but I’m glad you did lol

The biggest thing I personally took away from this is how careful he was to not mentally disturb any of the children. Yet, because we got an honest up-close look at how things work... even after following everything absolutely 100% legally to a T... it still felt really ugly. This show really made me reconsider the ethics of children as actors. Brilliant show, Nathan! xoxo

Excellent analysis. One thing I was hoping you’d touched on is on neurodiversity. As an autistic person, “other nathan” is someone I profoundly relate to. Having grown up always feeling like the “other”. Like everyone was given a script and I had to figure out or write my own by looking at other people and reverse engineering what the script is.

Is Nathan on the Spectrum?
@ane3sha
@ane3sha 2 жыл бұрын
i can't stress enough how much i feel that so much of the appeal of nathan fielder is an autistic experience, but i can't tell if its all a bit or only partially a bit (which is part of the bit). its almost painful to watch people talk about his work without pointing out how overt it is in both the rehearsal and nathan for you. that being said, its up to individual people to learn the language of neurodiversity, and it'll likely be up to people who acutely understand the autistic experience to point those things out- especially since they're so deeply enmeshed with absurdist comedy in both of his shows.
@dimetrodonz
@dimetrodonz 2 жыл бұрын
@@zebraylonwoodruff6773 he's never said anything about being autistic himself, but the character he portrays has a lot of similarities to people on the spectrum. Missing seemingly obvious social cues, "chronic nervousness" as he says in Nathan For You, telling jokes that never land, feeling isolated from other people, etc.
@FLdancer00
@FLdancer00 2 жыл бұрын
@@ane3sha Why is it up to other people to learn the language of neurodiversity? I worked with an autistic guy who told us day one and listed some things he might do differently. It was super helpful. “We can never know what someone else really thinks of us…” This reminded me of something I learned in a childhood development class about how it’s not so important to your child what you actually think of them, as what THEY think you think of them… because all other things being equal, that’s what they’re going to remember and carry with them their entire lives (ie: what’s gonna potentially “fuck them up” or cause your relationship with them to be “distant” or “strained”)

I think not addressing the autistic experience on top of the discussion of anxiety was a missed opportunity. The "oh, ok" of accepting things without questioning them because so much "normal" is really flippin' weird that it can be difficult to tell what's "normal" weird and what's "weird" weird. The social anxiety from literally not working from the same script as others due to neurodiversity.

I'm really surprised that autism/neurodivergence didn't come up. The entire "Other" vs "Real" Nathan is literally a description of the tool we have to use, "masking." Most people on the spectrum don't even know they are, because we'd been raised to understand that if you don't mask, you will be ostracized by others. The monotone voice, history of isolation, needing to rehearse social situations to an absurd degree, put on layers and creating a persona, then another persona to hide that one, everything, just from clips, let alone other signs he may display. I had no idea I was on the spectrum until a few months ago (age 24), because I had been diagnosed with ADHD, and had started noticing the overlap between the two. It's honestly so interesting to see someone describe Nathan's mannerisms this way, because it's just like the toothbrush, but instead it's autism. (Another person to look at who has all the signs of autism, but has ADHD hiding it well, is Jerma985, in my opinion!)
@McSwagan

Yes! I've seen like 3 other The Rehearsal video essays that completely miss the neurodivergence aspect. They call out all the signs of autism without calling it out. They just end up saying he's a weird guy and there's no way anyone could actually act like that. I am right there with you on highly masked adult autism this show was a spiritual experience for me.

Like others have said, I think it would have been great to connect this to neurodiversity, specifically autism. I understand though how that may not come to mind though if it's not something you personally deal with. Plus it would take away your focus from the point of the video which is anxiety. I really appreciate this video still cause with all the other commentary largely just criticising this show; your video is the first to make me notice the autism connection which makes me want to investigate this more for myself! TLDR I get not bringing up neuro diversity though I wish you did, but either way really great video and perspective on The Rehersal!

It's funny how Waterworld's infamy regarding its production problems and resulting budget blowout, caused it to gain a reputation as a flop even though it technically wasn't. In the end the film made a profit but that initial bad press hurt it's box office and caused an exaggerated idea of its poor quality to spread. Many people actually like the film and I would guess that a lot of the people who didn't love it, didnt actually hate it either (yes, I'm sure some people hate it. You wont prove anything by declaring how much you hate it)
