I was fortunate enough to meet Meat Loaf at a convention in Sept 2021 a few months before he passed. He did a panel discussion where he explained: "I'm not a singer. I can't sing. I'm an actor and some of the characters I play can sing."

This is a great song and I loved your analysis. I've been listening to this for years and I just realized, thanks to your help, that the echoes they fade out with are two people looking back on that night in vastly different ways; he's looking back with resigned sadness (it was long ago and it was far away and it's so much better than it is today), while she's desperately trying to hold onto the idea that she did the right thing (it never felt so good, it never felt so right). As for an inspirational quote: I'm a combat vet in my 50's and the two that seem most relevant are a recent one from a video game - "That which cannot be avoided must be endured," and one I've used for years - "the only things I HAVE to do is breath and die; everything else is an option." The second is particularly poignant because I have adult onset asthma.

I refer to "Bat Out of Hell" as the perfect album. Not only is there not a bad song on the album but any of the songs would be my favorite on a different record. When I consider "For Crying Out Loud" to be the weakest song on an album, that is really saying something. Note that "Bat Out of Hell" should not be confused with "Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell" which is still jam packed with fantastic material.

Jim Steinman, man. We can't have a discussion about Meatloaf with including Jim Steinman. Just like you can't hear any line from a BB King song without knowing it's BB King, or a guitar lick from Santana, Jim Steinman as a writer, composer and arranger had such an identifiable style that it only takes a line or two to recognize his work. Meatloaf was an incredible singer and performer and paired with Jim Steinman, they made iconic music together.

You are absolutely correct about Jim Steinman. If you want the Steinman effect without Meatloaf listen to Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart." As far as sayings go, I have one. When my 6-month-old son died suddenly, for several months, I was in a dark place. I felt like the heartbreak and the broken relationships were too heavy to lift, and I wanted to run away from it all and leave the pain behind. As I considered this, the movie The Shawshank Redemption was on TV, and when they got to the phrase, "Get busy living or get busy dying," it shook me. I realized that I needed to get busy living. I still had so much, and so many people relied on me. I needed to push through for them and for me. I got serious about therapy and put in some really hard work. I'm a way better man today than I was before my son died, and I feel like that movie at that time was the kick I needed.

From his classic debut album Bat out of Hell, written and produced by Jim Steinman. Meat Loaf and Steinman had met in the 70's stage musical scene. The title song is awesome. Steinman also wrote and produced Ellen Foley's We belong to the Night, Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart and Holding out for a Hero, and It's All Coming back to me now, which was covered by Celine Dion. He also co- wrote the musical Whistle Down the Wind with Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and wrote the musical Dance of the Vampires. And most of Meat Loaf's other albums. Check out I would do Anything for Love.

Whistle Down the Wind is such an odd thing - it sounds like it's 110% Steinman in places, I would have sworn that all Lloyd Webber contributed was the ballads - but Steinman liked to recycle melodies almost as much as Lloyd Webber does, and there are no pre-existing Steinman melodies in there(though of course he did get the lyric "we'll never be as young as we are right now" in there). It's probably Lloyd Webber's best pastiche of another musician. It's also a conflicted show, starting out equal parts teenage sexual awakening, gritty unflinching portrayal of racism and mob mentality, and cute kiddies being cute. Subsequent productions only really focus on the cute kiddies being cute, which is a massive shame.

Yes and no. In 1977 there was also a pretty significant 1950s nostalgia thing going on for the last 3-4 years. This song (and several others on the album) takes a lot of rhythmic and stylistic quotes from 1959s music. This was also heard in music coming out of the Jersey Shore, Springsteen, etc, and the Rocky Horror Picture show you mention.

My late wife and I would act this song out at every wedding we went to (though not our own). We got good enough at it that people would come up to us afterwards and ask if everything was OK between us. 38 years together (35 married) never a doubt in our minds.

The thing I always find interesting about paradise, is that at the beginning of the song, meatloaf says "I remember every little thing as if it happened only yesterday" - so the entire song is basically the story of the couple reflecting on how they met , better times and how they went wrong.

"Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can." -- Arthur Ashe In our world, there are so many hurts that seem too deep to heal. As just one person, I often feel insignificant, and powerless to help others. This quote always reminds me that if everyone made even the tiniest effort to make the world a better place, then together we would make a huge difference. You don't have to have a lot of power, money, or influence; you don't even need to be seen or to make a sound. Doing something is better than doing nothing. I return to the Arthur Ashe quote again and again. It guides me and helps me find a way to do SOMETHING.

Meat Loaf brought 19 rampacked nights of happiness to the people of Ireland 1989 - 1990 where he played in places he thought no one would come to, one night I was lucky to attend in January, when I was (barely) 17. Meat was very pleased to see how many attended each gig and the rumbunctious crowd restored Meat's love for performing, leading to his reuniting with Jim Steinman & Bat Out Of Hell 2 was released a couple of years later. The movie 'Meat Loaf To Hell & Back' is worth a look. The cast is stellar!

Freshman year of college, during finals it was quiet week in the dorms. But for one hour each evening, we could make as much noise as we wanted. It started with someone playing this at max volume. By the end of the week, we had a full routine running up and down the hallway of the dorm, with two people in each role and background singers. It was *amazing*. I just find all the changes and the way they sing totally different parts overlapping each other so impressive. It's a brilliant performance of a fantastic song.

I saw Bowie in concert four times starting with his Sound and Vission tour in ‘90. His stage presence was truly awesome - I saw him for the first time in a packed Dodgers Stadium. Imagine thousands and thousands of fans utterly silent as Bowie, with his acoustic guitar, sang “Space Oddity” by himself on a dark stage. It was just awesome.

Several points here: 1. The is Karla DeVito you see lip-syncing in the video. Although Karla did perform backup vocals on several tracks on the "Bat Out of Hell" album, it was Ellen Foley who sang the LEAD Female vocals on the album. However, as Foley was a Broadway star, actress, and singer - she already had commitments lined up, thus was unable to tour with Meat Loaf, or even record the video. Here's is Ellen Foley on The Old Grey Whistle Test (kzbin.info/www/bejne/ponUnalsi8Z2ercsi=vDlx16I9eS0L7Pyy) Ellen Foley's "Night Out" album is an absolute classic!!! 2. Meat Loaf - By 1977, when this track was released, Meat Loaf already had a long, accomplished career. He starred in the original American theatre cast of "Rocky Horry Picture Show", and later starred in the movie version. He had 10+ years of stage experience. He sang backup for many artists, including LEAD singing most of Ted Nugent's "Free For All" tracks. So his "theatrical" movements in this video were just natural considering his extensive background in theatre. Meat Loaf will be a DEEP dive. Not many singles, but phenomenal album, stage, and screen performances!!

Speaking of his vocal technique, when Meat Loaf auditioned for the theatrical version of "Rockie Horror Picture Show", he sand "Hot Patootie - Bless My Soul". Actor, song-writer, and writer of the screenplay, Richard O'Brien told Meat Loaf not to worry about singing each of the words... Meat Loaf responded that he could do it. O'Brien responded that NO ONE can do it, that he made a mistake in writing the song. Needless to say, Meat Loaf ABSOLUTELY nailed the song, articulating every single syllable, on pitch, and was immediately hired. Here's that song (kzbin.info/www/bejne/pn61nWhripWYetksi=s2qLnOdWpFCVuUaF)

The vision & writing of Jim Steinman, the presence & theatrics of Meatloaf - & the absolute genius that is Todd Rungren (who never gets the love he deserves in my humble opinion) turning it into something useable in the studio. Oh, & has probably already been mentioned, that's Ellen Foley singing. Karla Devito took it out on tour. "Never stand up if you sit down, never sit down if you can lie down" - Sir Winston Churchill.
