It didn't take long, about 60 seconds. I just whittled a flat on a straight piece of all this downed Water Oak and my top board was ready to go. I scraped some rust off of my hobo stove, rolled it up in 6" of cotton, put that top board to use atop a log, and got an easy fire roll ignition. I continued with Water Oak punkwood for a coal extender, leaves for my tinder bundle, and fueled the fire with a punky branch. Come check it out. Please follow the LINK below and SUBSCRIBE. Hi David! Oh boy! I can see that poison growing up that downed tree clearly now! Just looking at it makes me want to itch.

I was very allergic to it growing up in Illinois, moved to Alaska and was free of the itch for 36 years. Then one day I caught it, none growing in Alaska so I must have caught it from a tourist walking by. It’s all around the upstate but I’ve yet to get the itch.

Nice video. You always make it look so easy, but its not. BTW, you got a nice shoutout from Blackie Thomas in his latest video, so he's obviously one of your viewers. ATB.

Solid work Dave, been looking at playlist and wondering if you ever did a fire plow technique, it looks like a good technique but editing can make a huge difference but i'm gonna give it a try one day

I attempted this last night for about 30 minutes.. Granted I was using the materials I had access to at 2:00 AM in the morning but it was a complete failure.. A medical cotton ball ( that probably wasn't pure) and cigarette ashes along with a smaller wood piece like you made in this video. Next time I go out to the store I will try to get more reagents to try again.

Tight fire roll and good downward pressure will yield you success.

David...I have watched you use cotton balls, t-shirts and paper towels to fire roll but is there any material such as a thin bark that you could use as the fire roll. I always wondered if small strips of cedar bark would work. Around in my woods, we ha e very big old cedar trees and sometimes the bark will peel off in thin sheets. I know moisture might be a problem but could it work if conditions were right? I am going deer hunting this weekend down on our property and will bring back some small strips of cedar and try it. Just trying to think of different materials that are available. By the way, I am getting really good at bow drilling. Very confident I can make fire with that method. I have learned a great deal from you and I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge with me.
