Don't worry, Robert and Andy, EVERYONE wants an electric camper van. Surprised no-one's really gone for it yet. Actually, what I really want is an electric camper van but which, like the Sono motors car you looked at, has solar panels on the roof. Because, you know, looking at a camper van online, as I was thinking about this, the roof of a camper van could easily be 8 metres squared or more (about 2 metres abreast and 4 or more in length). That's a lot of roof space for solar. But, no, as always, there's no expectation that the solar would actually run the camper van. It's more that you'd have solar and a battery for using the camper van (or an RV, if you want to go a bit larger on the concept) for, say, powering a mini fridge for your beers or a small microwave or electric rings for cooking stuff. And it's just a bonus that, if you're leaving it parked up in a sunny field for a few days, then it'll fill that battery right up, while it's not otherwise going anywhere. So, you know, if you went to a camping spot, parked up for a week of "fun, fun, fun, in the Sun, Sun, Sun" (nod to the Red Dwarf theme song there) then it probably would top the battery back up for the return journey. It's such an obvious want, it's really surprising that there aren't that many electric & solar camper vans / RVs / caravans out there. Basically, a mobile home that generates its own electricity. And the other thing about camper vans / RVs is that they're already got the right shape for the "sled" design. A big flat floor in which to stuff a massive battery. The torque of an EV for that little bit of "off-roading" you might do to drive your camper van into a field. (Here's another idea to throw into the ring. An EV towing a caravan - the caravan can have its own solar and battery too, for the purposes, as I say, of powering refrigeration / cooking appliances on your camping holiday. But you could have it that when you tow the caravan, you also have an electrical connection between the EV and the caravan, so the caravan's battery can help charge up the EV for a longer trip. You see, you can't do that with an ICE, but with electricity, you could have the tow connection carry power and then your EV now has a second battery to draw power from too.) If I had the expertise and cash to kick up a startup, then I'd already be doing this. It seems like a big obvious customer want - we'd all love an electric camper van (or RV, if you're really into actually going on a genuine camping holiday). When I saw Sono Motors with their EV that had solar on it, I immediately thought they'd missed a trick. In that solar on a camper van or RV or caravan would make tons more sense - as you can plug appliances in, and your vehicle actually passively generate power, as it's parked there on a sunny day - and it's already the perfect form factor for it, in that you've got a big flat roof for solar and a big flat floor, under which you store the battery. These delivery vans would also make sense in this department. Look at the roof space on that thing. Cover it in solar and then it could actually passively generate power on a sunny day - and this could power, for example, refrigeration for perishable foods in the back. Or, if it's a pizza delivery, say, then it could power a "keep the pizza warm" heater, so it's still lovely and hot by the time the delivery guy gets to your door. For a "mobile burger van" sort of deal, the solar and battery can be powering the cooker and fridge - and perhaps a sound system, to play music, to attract customer's attention. Solar on a car? Well, it could dribble a bit more into the range, maybe. But solar on a van - delivery van, camper van, mobile burger van - would make an abundance of sense to power other things, like refrigeration, cooking, entertainments, lights at night, etc. and the power's all free.

Not to mention frequent oil changes are also an added cost. Electric vehicles are uber simple in comparison. They are nowhere near the mechanical complexity of a combustion powered vehicle. There drastically less required maintenance, and there is a lot less to wear out or fail over time. It is yet another reason why electric vehicles are so environmentally friendly and an economically better option, and why they will soon take over. I love that these are starting to be a thing. As someone that by and large has never owned a new vehicle in their life, my transition to electric is likely going to be dictated by the second-hand market. On that level I'm currently in the planning stages of a coach to mobile home conversion. Now, leaving aside generally not driving new vehicles, who has the money for a $350,000 coach? Not me. But... If it's old enough, they can get into even the $10,000 to $20,000 range, and then it becomes a lot more viable... What has that got to do with these vans? Well, should be obvious. To be able to do similar things with electric vehicles in future, said vehicles have to exist first. XD And I'm happy to see we're moving away from just cars...

Way to go, Rivian! You are truly doing the world a good deed by producing vehicles that will replace petrol vans and buses. UPS and FEDEX typically keeps their vehicles for a long, long time because they can maintain them and because they are quite simple vehicles, really. The thing about electric vehicles is that UPS will be able to have a much longer serviceable life with these vehicles. I can see a 30-40 year lifespan but obviously, the batteries and other components will need to be replaced. I challenge Rivian to make it possible for UPS to have these electric vans in service for that long!

@@thomasfrederiksendk Given the lack of engine / drive-train considerations (and e.g. having to work around the exhaust headers when switching the wheel to the other side, etc), it should be fairly easy to convert. @danielwhyatt32784 жыл бұрын
That's definitely one of the big incentives for this vehicle. With EVs going about, cyclists will have to be more aware of their surrounding than previously have, so this kind of viewing ability for the drivers is a great help for both parties. They will have to of course make sure that the size and curvature they're using for the screen doesn't increase the conduction of heat in the driver area on sunny days. That's what one of their trials coming up with the 20 test models will be about I guess.

@@gooble69 looking at the parking for the Maui campers in christchurch, there's parking for about 400 campers. They have 10 depots. So that's 4000. If they plan on 80% occupancy, that's 20 000 campers. However Māui is one of 3 main brands held by THL. They use their campers for 1 year under the Maui premium brand. 4 years under Britz, and another 5 years as Mighty. So the Maui branded campers would be about 10% of their fleet.
