That's what I've been thinking. I realized the majority of the emcees, producers, and deejays I listened to in my teens were usually in their mid-late twenties or thirties, and I didn't even realize it. Young emcees tend to be extremely boring with a few exceptions, and most of the young faces I see these days are actually a decade older than they look. I'm not going to lie, it was a little strange at first seeing my favorite artists rapping (or deejaying) in videos with gray in their beards, but I got over it quickly. They're dope, speak on interesting topics, and many have even improved with age. Now there's this entire wave of newcomers mostly in their 30s and 40s making some of the dopest songs I've ever heard. It's incredible! Rap in my opinion is not a young man's game; it's a GROWN man's game that rewards men that actually have something interesting to say. They say that Hip Hop (in the mainstream) is dying. So be it. It will live on in cities like NY, LA, or Chicago. Most "fans" don't even like the genre anyways. Throw on a drumless beat - all bars, no chorus, and 90% of them will leave the room. What they actually like is catchy beats, high energy, and implied social status through association to music. It's finally time the actual fans and "old heads" retake control of the genre; all in natural order. Like zoomers that genuinely love to listen to oldies, 70s, 80s, classical, folk, and so on, people born in 2030 will still fall in love with the genre the same way "old heads" did.

@@michaelewell5529 I've noticed that with myself. I barely listen to music anymore unless it's in a TV/movie/videogame score. And I don't really try finding anything new in Hip Hop these days because it's tough and I just don't feel like it anymore 😩. I just started exploring different genres and older forms of music.

Bc the rock bands don’t stand for 360s or getting stuff up front. They wanna own their stuff. Also!!! They don’t need to portray an image of popularity. Basically they don’t need to bow down to music execs and sign any contract where your rights are shot. Grow up and stop blaming it on race.

Rapping used to be a young man's sport, but that was because a 10 year gap was very different culturally a few decades ago. A 80s rapper and a 90s rapper sounded VERY different from each other. But rappers now have been rapping about the same topics since like 2009. The only difference is 10 bpm and more distortion. Not to mention that hip-hop itself is a relatively young genre, the people us 30+ year olds came up on are still rapping and making relevant music. Back when hip hop started there was a generation of old heads that weren't raised under hip-hop, for THEM it would be considered out of place/rare, because they had already grown and matured under different music/culture. A 35 year old today had rap since birth.

Fast forward to 15 minutes ago. I open my KZbin app not knowing that the first video suggesting will give me the energy to continue. You did it again man. Huge fan of the stance that age shouldn't define what you do unless it defines how you get better. Age is only skin deep when you're a skilled and passionate creator. My theory on why Hip hop specifically love to enforce ageism in the culture is because most people who listen to hip hop hate to grow up and be mature. So they want to hear young music to make them “feel” young. I totally disagree with hip hop being a young man sport. It’s 50 yrs old we are blessed to be able to hear voices from all generations.

Curtiss you're spot on... 20 years ago, this guys statement may have been true because hip hop itself was young, most said it was a trend and wouldn't survive as a whole. Now hip hop influences the world as it hits 50, it dominates every genre and dictates where the economy goes next. IT HAS EVOLVED ..There are 50 year olds that grew up with it now so there will always be a target audience at any age. Those opinionated guidelines about age were made for record companies to take advantage of young artists and rid of them by the time they finished their bad deals to start with the next new batch of green unexperienced talent hungry for a bad deal.. A&R's are also not the same, they used to be required to develop artists when labels actually did artist development. Nowadays most these new a&r's are there because of a relationship, not their knowledge of the music business.

True, it's a evil strategy to perpetually take advantage of the artist as well as keep skilled lyricists from exposing the system and corrupt government. Young rappers will only focus on the script they're given; drugs, sex, money. All things leading to prison and making the label owners, who own shares in prison, very wealthy.

As a 25yr old getting into music, this topic is one that has discouraged me from the whole music scene. “Am I too old?” A harsh question that nobody wants circling in their head. The answer is no. You’re not too old to chase something you’re passionate about. There’s no age bracket on talent and there damn sure isnt an age limit on passion. Someone will listen. Someone will love it. And if anything, I find it more impressive when older artists/songwriters/etc. can still perform at the same level, if not better, than a lot of younger people. Just my opinion though 😁

Hip hop has a problem where we isolate ourselves from the other genres. Why should hip hop have a problem with age when we still have rock bands, country, and pop artists still performing like Metallica, Bob Dylan, Dolly Parton and Dionne Warwick. Hearing this inspires me as a content creator and musician to be another voice for us “Old Heads”

Only in hip hop are we told that you're over the hill at 30. Meanwhile, U2, Metallic and Rolling Stone are still thriving in their 60s and 70s. Or culture is so weird and short sighted, that longevity and wisdom are frowned upon.

Literally had this conversation with my wife yesterday. I don't get the young mans sport argument. Rappers that start 19 aren't even the same person after 25. You've grown, you've got experiences, your more mature more refined. If raps for young men tell that to Jay-Z, Jay Electronica, Westside Gunn, Killer Mike, Black Thought. It's a dumb argument. There needs to be more older mature rappers out there

I think what it is, is that hip hop USED to be a young man's sport, because the music genre itself was young. The first generation of hip hop artists and fans were all young back in the 1980s, 70s, etc. But now, we have multiple generations of hip hop fans and artists. It is no longer the young man's sport, because the pioneers of hip hop, including the fans have an age demographic that hits all age groups. Because of that, anyone at any age now can drop an album, and should if they feel the passion for the music.

As a musician, writer, and artist...it's no surprise that an artist/ repertoire agent thinks that society shapes art.....while any real talent will tell you that its the opposite and that art shapes society and that the differences society goes through only helps artists see different ways to express what they have to say/show/give.

This mentality is why so many young men are going very far astray in their music. How will all the wisdom of an older man just fade away with him? And then we'll have the audacity to wonder why the music is so shallow.

Man, that A&R dude’s perspective sounds a whole lot like it comes from the philosophy behind the plot of “Logan’s Run” to me! So we should kill off all the artists who are 30+ in age?!?!? NO!! New, younger artists should be birthed continually into the industry, but also their relevance should be cultivated for greater measures of longevity unto multiple generations of listeners. Anyway, thanks 😊 so much for sharing this VERY informative and insightful content!

Great topic I agree 100 percent. Hip hop is a art form a CULTURE. What so crazy is you don’t see a age limit in Country or Rock n Roll…. Even pop stars are still doing their thing. The problem is these higher ups are trying to wash down the genre of Hip Hop and these so call professionals don’t even see it. We need older artists so the young artist have someone to look to for advise and guidance which what is missing today.

Besides Hov... Pusha T is 46. Kendrick 36. Future 39. Drake 36. Ye 36. All of them heavily streamed. As an A&R, what he means is he doesn't want older rappers. Young artists are more useful to him because he can turn them into whatever he wants and get them to sign contracts more easily. Older MCs will have a stronger sense of who they are and they can defend themselves better against bad deals.

Great video. Rap has only been considered a "young man's sport" because rap itself is a relatively young genre. If you look at which music act has been grossing the most from concerts and tours over the past two years, it's the Rolling Stones, and those guys are a million years old. If you have your talent and your market, you can go for as long as you need to.

This was my response on to that @juju_mclean see but you saying this is putting limits on something we created as a people let people be people and stop supporting that past 30 crap out there you don't hear them saying if you're trying to start singing country music past 30 give it up it doesn't make sense to support that idea studies been shown that the brain isn't fully developed until 26 4 years shy from 30 and the best in the game right now be around and past that age so if you're looking for people to understand you it won't happen business is business and no matter the age of it's good business it'll work we gotta get out of that mentality and support what is good

Kids can’t by tickets, that’s why these younger generation rappers can’t sell out arena’s. This guy sounds like he’s scared to grow up. How long can you rap about money , women, and cars? Rapping is poetry, rapping is writing. The money, connections, respect, opportunity is in rapping about deeper things. Even when I was 18 and in my 20’s I couldn’t relate to younger rappers. The “ old “ guys just keep getting better and better. Rap is art not pop. And I think it’s time we take the art back and stop selling it to kids who can’t afford it.

You’re never too old to achieve your goals and your dreams whether you’re a rapper or a producer these ANR’s say that it’s a young man sport because it’s easier to manipulate younger artist that don’t know any better for themselves and their music but if your older artist with more knowledge they know better and they are not easy to manipulate. I love music is what I enjoy doing and I’m 31 years old I don’t let anything stand in my way I don’t care what anyone else thinks about me or what I do that doesn’t matter to me. I’m in this for the long term gain not the short term gain.

You've got people with gray hair and gray beards STILL putting out fire. There's no expiration date on a gift! You have your Smashing Pumpkins, Metallicas, etc still making music and still being openly received by their audiences, young and old. Why is that so hard for hip-hop audiences? It's short-sighted to think that it's only for young people, and that trend is being widely reversed.

Hip hop/ Rap ain't no young man's sports, anyone at any age can be great in the business, what they looking at by getting the younger artists is to exploit them like how they keep doing all the ones before them with lots of 360 deals & big promises, the younger people can bring out the younger crowds but is their creativity music wise or beat wise on a different level that those before them that were considered the greats..
