I find it incredibly condescending that anyone thinks that a teen could be uninterested in history. I had liked history since I was a child, and my introduction to the Tudors came with the 1970 series The Six Wives of Henry VIII. I was 12 then, and found the entire series riveting. Sure it wasn't 100% accurate, but it was certainly far better than most of the dreck about the Tudors today. To presume that all teens need history to be so radically altered to be enjoyable is insulting to those who really do like somewhat-accurate portrayals.

I know. The only time that I have seen Mary portrayed with a French accent was in "Gunpowder, Treason and Plot" when she was played by French actress Clemence Poesy. Mary was half French and spent about 10 years at the French court from the time she was 5 years old. The same can be said when French Canadian actress, Genevieve Bujold, portrayed Anne Boleyn in "Anne of the Thousand Days". Hers was the only portrayal that I have seen that would have accurately portrayed her with a French accent from Anne's years at the French court. She went there as a very young child as well. I've seen good portrayals of Anne, but Genevieve nailed it. Back to Mary, Queen of Scots, I do think that physically, Vanessa Regrave probably resembled her the most. Mary was 6 feet tall and Vanessa is about 5'10" or 11", the red hair and she has a similar nose. I do think that Vanessa gave a good performance even tho' she was 34 playing a 16 year old in the beginning, but she came off as a naive young girl with not a clue of how politics peppers life.

The main problem with contemporary period dramas (with some notable exceptions such as Wolf Hall) is that they're not selling history, they're basically selling sex. People by and large just want to see people in exotic costumes acting all wicked and decadent (this they think of as "realism"). Yes, these dramas sell violence too, but that's all part of selling the sex. Also, as you point out, for the most part actors today basically act and talk like modern people in costumes, maybe talking a bit more "properly" for more of that "realism". They don't give the impression of being people from another time as in the dramas of old.

While I agree with you on most of your points, there's a reason most modern people don't really care for Shakespeare and it has to with the distance between the speech of his day and ours. If the movies used actual speech patterns and correct pronunciation we would have some difficulty following the dialogue. Contemporary usage with the "flavour" of the period doesn't bother me too much unless it's jarring and out of place. But I do agree with you and wish that historical movies actually used more of the real story and not "Hollywood-ize". The actual history is usually quite compelling and, presented intelligently, shows universal truths about human behaviour--why mess with it?

I agree with Starkey; historical accuracy isn't really necessary to make a good film/tv show, but if you're selling it as a history, show us some damn history. If you're inspired by a true event and want to make your own take on it, that's all good! But don't claim that it's what the real human beings involved really went through. I agree for the most part. I suggest you look up Dr Kat on YT called “Reading the Past”. She does a marvelous job in describing and taking you on an historical journey into Tudor and Renaissance history. It is not as “dry” as Dr Starkey’s videos. She has an AMAZING accent and she’s a pleasure to watch. I don’t watch, for example, Reign, for historical accuracy. The producers said from the beginning they added their own “flare for the dramatic” from the outset so you don’t watch it for accuracy as much as the actors themselves and the beautiful clothes. Some parts were historically accurate but they played to a CW audience made up of young people that are into Anime and fantasy rather than facts. (I do not include myself in that category). If the viewer believed EVERYTHING in an historical piece of TV or cinema, they’ll probably be bored as the way they spoke and dialogue would probably lose most viewers. TV and Cinema has ALWAYS been concerned with making money off of a film or TV show than just historical facts anyway.

There's a hidden agenda of these fictional depictions of historical characters. I grew up watching Sophia Coppola's "Marie Antoinette", later "Elizabeth" and "Elizabeth: Golden Age" with Cate Blanchett, "The Tudors", "Borgias", even "Reign" at some point, before binging on "Magnificent Century". If I haven't watched this shows and films, I wouldn't have been as keen on learning the real story behind them as I eventually became. I read historians' takes on Borgias and while I hated how the show makes it all about sex and violence, I still felt strongly about that period of time to do more research on it. Similarly with "The Tudors" and "Magnificent Century". "Reign" and the whole popularity of bad historical dramas actually made more girls of my age buying historian-written essays on the characters, rather than take another popular history biography full of "spicy" details, because they've been proven to be misleading. It's also channels of fashion historians, mostly female, who make more people from these shows fandoms realise, they've been lied to visually, which doesn't mean the wrong shows can still spark the interest of young people in their countries history. After awful show about late Piast period of Polish-Lithuanian history, I find that people do more than just google search to learn about the characters and given our poor public education of history, this might just pay off. And while I would like some better shows and films to be made, especially costume-wise, I hope the rise of internet discussion about historical accuracy needs to get more attention, in order for anything to change. The more people watch "Reign" and asks themselves "why is 16th century monarch wearing Alexander-McQueen-looking dress?", the closer we are to widely postulate historical accuracy. We need "internet mob", that cares about these shows, to make showrunners bend to our expectations. The fact there is now louder opposition is due to people feeling strongly about this media, and I'm not gonna lie, I care about Elizabeth I.'s portrayal, because I enjoyed Cate Blanchett film and only after watching it I read David Starkey and fell for his portrait of young Elizabeth - and I still hope film directors and producers will do her justice rather than whatever "Reign" wanted to do with her character. I hope things will be changing for the better, while Jodie Turner-Smith's Anne Boleyn or Tamzin Merchant's Katherine Howard will be rightfully called out for what's wrong with them.

The Golden Age of Keith Mitchel, Glenda Jackson, Dorothy Tutin, Paul Scofield, et al, is long gone, sadly. They don't even try anymore. Hearing your description of Reign (which I've never seen) I was reminded of an old mini series from 2005 about the life of a young Augustus Caesar called 'Empire'. In that series, following the assassination of Julius Caesar, the young Augustus is taken under the wing of a Gladiator who becomes his bodyguard. Their adventures take them across Italy where they're captured and enslaved at 'Arkham Dungeon' and are forced to participate in Fight Club style brawls created by the prison guards. Eventually they break free but are chased to Gaul by a mad Marc Antony who wants Augustus dead. Luckily they rally Caesar's disgraced lost legion (veterans of Caesar's war against Mithridates the Great in Spain?!?) and defeat Marc Antony in a forest battle which involves a titanic clash between about 30 people. Marc Antony surrenders and goes into exile on Augustus's order. Augustus returns to Rome in triumph and marries a Vestal Virgin (played by Emily Blunt before she got famous) before being crowned emperor. Just like Reign I can't fathom why they chose to make a series about a famous historical figure without even bothering to get anything right about the era of history they're covering. It's just utterly bizarre.

I'm an American and have read or seen documentaries about Tudor England, not to mention a ton of movies and series. I am in full agreement with you, Keith Michell was the best Henry VIII ever portrayed with Charles Laughton coming in second. The 1971, when I was 15, the series is how I became interested in Tudor history. I think that the actresses and actors were very well cast. Patrick Troughton, Bernard Hepton and Wolfe Morris actually looked like Norfolk, Cranmer and Cromwell according to their historical portraits. I have seen so many, many miscast actresses and actors portraying Henry, Richard Burton, Eric Bana and Jonathan Rhys Meyers come to mind first. I want to quickly add that Annette Crosbie was excellent as Katherine of Aragon because of her acting ability and the fact the Katherine was indeed fair skinned and haired like her mother, Queen Isabella. I could go on, but I would be writing an essay instead of commenting on your excellent channel. One more thing, The Tudors and Reign? Oy vey!

@@The_Laughing_Cavalier I’ve seen that movie with my mom, it was my first Tudor movie. I told her about some historical inaccuracies of that movie especially regarding the fact that movie omitted More’s other children and his belligerent relationship with Protestants. Overall, I enjoyed the movie. Robert Shaw was a great Henry, he was far better than both Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Eric Bana combined. Also the costumes and sets were far accurate and much better than that garbage show the tudors.

I loved The Tudors and have the boxed set and the entire award winning soundtrack. The best wife on it was Natalie Dormer as Ann Boleyn. She had more impact on history and the reformation than any other queen. She was bold and broke the rules. With the boxed set come amazing interviews with historians, deleted scenes, bloopers, interviews with the actors and the writer plus tours of Hampton Court and the Tower and all sorts of other snippets of information, viewing of original documents and letters, the kings armour etc.

In defense of the Charles Laughton Henry VIII, I think the production was very knowingly tongue-in-cheek, and was basically satirizing attitudes and showcasing the marvelous Laughton (who does a more serious Henry in "Young Elizabeth", with Jean Simmons as Elizabeth and Deborah Kerr as Catherine Parr. I put it on the same guilty pleasure list as "Tower of London", with Basil Rathbone as Richard III and Vincent Price totally enjoying himself as George (the malmsey scene alone is worth the price of admission, and I say this a loyal Ricardian).

Don't hate me but I really really love "The Tudors". Not because it's accurate but because it completely intrigued me in the Tudor time period. Since I've watched the series (and that's at least 7 years ago), I've informed myself quite a lot on the subject. I would never have done that if I had not watched the show and to be completely fair.. most of the other movies or tv shows about the tudors don't grab my attention as much so yeah I still prefer The Tudors but I do know fact from fiction :)
@jenniferschillig37683 жыл бұрын
I've only ever dabbled in The Tudors. (Some of the first season and one or two epsiodes of later seasons.) Normally, I can excuse inaccuracies within reason. But when they had -Mary- Margaret Tudor shag Charles Brandon on the voyage to marry the king of -France- Portugal, and had her MURDER him...jeez. I do understand that Natalie Dormer did a fine job as Anne, but I've heard nothing but bad stuff about the rest of it. What really got under my skin was the fact that Jonathan Rhys Myers refused to wear padding or makeup for the later part of the series. He claimed he didn't want to be the cliched fat Henry VIII, but I suspect that he just didn't want to appear fat or unattractive onscreen. And that's a mistake drama-wise, because Henry's deterioration had a lot to do with his mental state and his behavior in the last years of his life. I watched the episode where he met Anne of Cleves--and there's no disguise game, no rejection from Anne before she realizes who he is, no indication that Anne finds him unattractive, no reason for him to project her own dislike back at her...and yet he's ranting and raving that he can't stand her. And IIRC, there's a scene in that episode where someone's dressing his leg wound...and he's shirtless and looks as hot as ever. One of the most traumatic parts of Henry's life at the time, his leg injury which caused him constant physical and mental pain and hindered the athletic pursuits he loved, is treated as an excuse to show off how HAWT he is.

Like you said, there are SOME inaccuracies that are easy to forgive and understand: 1] Giving Mary Q.o.Ss.'s ladies different names in "Reign", because the real ones all shared her name. I do agree that they could've picked slightly-more period-appropriate ones, though, and my choices would've been things like Susan, Amy, Alice, or even Prudence. 2] Making Mary Boleyn older in "The Other Boleyn Girl" than she actually was for her marriage to William Carey. Let's face it -- modern movie audiences probably wouldn't have been able to stomach seeing a twelve-year-old, preparing for and then discussing her wedding night. 3] Because Jonathan Rhys Myers didn't want to wear a full-on fat-suit, the costume people for "The Tudors" compensated for this by giving him extra layers of clothing that were padded. Then, there are some we look at and think, "WTF?" Here just four of my own examples: 1] Tamzin Merchant's hair color in "The Tudors", which you also brought up. Natalie Dormer dyed her hair natural blond hair to play Anne Boleyn. Why couldn't Tamzin have done the same? Maybe, the powers that be in charge of the show were in such a rush to end it with the fourth season, that they just forgot the smaller details. *An even better example of that is how drastically they aged up Elizabeth and Edward, who were actually about six and two, respectively, by the section of time that the fourth season covers. If they'd stretched out the show just a tiny bit more, maybe another two seasons, it would've made more sense. 2] Mentioning only one of Henry's two sisters in "The Tudors", and giving her the name of the other, off-screen one. I get that they didn't want less-informed audiences to confuse her with her niece, but they could've added some dialogue to explain everything, and perhaps given her a nickname to further separate one Mary from the other. Then, as the cherry on that particular sundae, they married her into THE WRONG COUNTRY. 3] The costumes in "Reign"were what annoyed me the most. They looked like something off the Oscars or Met Gala red carpet. 4] Henry's ra***g of Anne Boleyn in "The Other Boleyn Girl". No. J-Just...NO. Anne was also the YOUNGER of the two sisters, but that change was carried over from the book. 5] Appearances in Tudor-based stories, as a whole. With a few exceptions, most of the dramas I've seen repeat the same mistakes... * Making Catherine of Aragon look old enough to be Henry's mother, when they were only six years apart. Also, giving her a stereotypical Spanish appearance, olive skin and black hair, when she was actually fair-skinned and a strawberry-blond (one semi-point for "The Spanish Princess", which gave her red hair). * Giving Henry dark brown or black hair, when he's widely-known to have been a red-head. Early movies, "Wolf Hall", and "The Spanish Princess" got that right, or close enough to it. So, why would hair dye or a wig have been a problem for the other portrayals? * Anne Boleyn's eye color. 99% of the accounts we know of describe her as having dark eyes, which we assume meant brown. And yet, most of the portrayals of Anne I've seen show her with light blue or light green eyes. It costs a lot of money to make a period drama, but colored contact lenses are cheap. So is hair-dye, which would've demonstrated the dark auburn hair most historians now agree Anne had. * The effect Anne Boleyn's upbringing in France would've had on her voice. Like Mary Q.o.Ss., Anne probably would've had a slight French accent. "Wolf Hall" did get right, but, so far, it seems to be the only portrayal that does. Deep breath. Lol. Whoever actually reads my entire ramble, I thank you very much. (2/26/2022)

I have loved history, especially Tudor history, since I was a young girl. I was old enough to understand that Henry was the King and he had six wives, but not old enough to understand that he wasn't married to all six at the same time, or that it wasn't him personally that had cut off two of their heads! The thought fascinated me, and I wanted to know more. Tudor history has become something I love to read and watch documentaries, series and movies about. I vaguely remember seeing the six wives series, and I have the movie too. So when I found out there was going to be a series called the Tudors, I was looking forward to seeing it. I put up with some of the inaccuracies to start with, but then they got rid of Mary, Henry's younger sister, called her Margaret, and had her marry Charles Brandon, who became the Duke of Suffolk, which is what Mary did. Big sister Margaret by this time had been packed off to Scotland to marry James IV, Of Scotland. Their apparent excuse for doing this was the didn't want the audience to get confused by Mary Tudor, Henry's daughter, and Mary Tudor, the Duchess of Suffolk, Henry's sister, the woman his daughter was named after. That's when I switched off. I haven't gotten round to watching it again. There are so many more Tudor, pre-Tudor films and series out there, many of them have no doubt, have a few mistakes in them. Others to look at maybe? Lady Jane - Helena Bonham-Carter, Henry VIII - Ray Winstone. ,

I'm a descendant of the Stewart's and Gordon's of Scotland. My distant ancestor was sent into exile for trying to kill Charles I. His uncle begged for him to be released from prison after having all of his holdings and nobility being stripped of him. Instead of being pardoned and restored his nobility he was exiled to the Netherlands and later shipped off to Barbados to work on the sugar plantations. It wasn't until a few years later one of his wealthy family members who owned a plantation gave him enough money to travel up into the American colonies where he settled a few towns in Connecticut and Maine and later fought in the battles leading up to the revolutionary war. I spent the last few years doing constant research on my family history and ancestry to find out the little information I have to connect my family with other branches of royalty, because it seems as though a lot was rewritten and covered up. I'm still annoyed at how they portrayed some of the characters. Especially "Margaret" Tudor. I mean, what?! It was MARY Tudor who married Brandon, not Margaret who was married and widowed to the King of Scotland, grandmother of Mary Queen of Scots. I'm not saying have every single person who actually lived in that time be there and have every single event portrayed, but at least get the main players right and condense, reference or just not bother with events (only if they're insignificant enough and don't have an impact). And then there's no Grey family who would be VERY important in season 4 in terms of Edward and setting up his protestant fanaticism just as an example.

We have seen it with so, so many shows, even ones that were airing during the GoT period, and after now that there’s a gap in the market to be filled. Its a big shame because now more than ever I see there to be a real thirst for historically accurate media, or at least an honest attempt at it, and there are few if any across ANY period that try.

Anne made the mistake of threatening him when she herself was politically weak after her miscarriage. He called her bluff and took her down before she could do the same. The basis of their rivalry was that Anne wanted to assist the poor with the funds raised from the dissolution of the monasteries, and Cromwell wanted it for the crown, himself, and to help buy the loyalty of the nobles. With that in mind, who was the better person? Anne wasn't even liked by her countrymen but she cared about them more than Cromwell did.

It’s strange & somewhat ironic that Miss Merchant said ‘it’s ‘easy’ to play to the period’ when this show’s direction, & **innumerable** other shows/ movies prove *the opposite* true - that they, in fact, cannot be bothered doing so, because it’s too hard or they think the audience is too stupid to understand or sympathise with a character of that time & eras’ mindset - Alec Guinness’ performance shows otherwise, especially when contrasted against the hammy paragon of Harris’ Cromwell. The rewriting & insertion of ‘certain things’ & attitudes that’s going on with historical dramas is beyond the joke; I watched the recently dropped trailer for S5 of Outlander, & it solidifies my opinion: when Brianna asks Claire if she’s not ‘playing God’ & she replies, “If I am to keep us safe here- then time, space, history- be damned.” Are you even kidding me with that BS?! I know time travel isn’t real, but that is the most breathtakingly *stupid* , not to mention unrealistic thing I’ve *ever* heard in a time travel story. And in the description it repeats the sentiment; ‘The Frasers will fight time, space & history to keep their family safe.’ Forgive me, but you *can* do those things, without being an idiot. I’ve been working on my own time travel story- set in the 17th c (I *hadn’t* heard of the books before the show, & started reading them after season 2- & by this point I’d long had my story plotted out), & I thank God my MC is not that stupid. I love me a good fantasy or historical drama, & hate to bring it back to this... they’re getting a bit like GoT- they have juggernaut-status, now & it seems to give them the feeling that they’re bulletproof, so they think they can get away with saying stupid sh*t like this. Edited for grammar

Once again loved your reviews of the Tudor dramas. You would think their actual lives would be interesting enough and not a boring documentary. Let's face it sex sells which is what they sold in the Tudors and Reign. I still can't get over Ann Boleyn with blue eyes and the short brunette Mary Queen of Scots. Although not accurate the costumes in Reign were rich and luxurious. And the plot lines in Reign were hysterically funny. Thanks again. Lookin forward to more reviews.

A blue eyed Anne is ridiculous, but Natalie Dormer had to beg to have her natural blonde hair dyed brunette... the series creator wanted her to stay a blonde... lol. But a blonde, blue eyed Anne (and a black-haired Katherine) is not even as stupid a casting choice as a hot, thin Wolsey (!) and a studly Thomas More. Um... no.

1) Jonathan Rhys-Meyers apparently didn't want to wear a fat suit for season 4, so that's why Henry is still very slender in season 4 and just has a bit of grey and talks like Christian Bale as Batman 2) The idea that Katherine Howard wouldn't fit in at court is... laughable at best since for all the drama that went down with Manox and Dereham at the Dowager Duchess's home, she was considered to be a model lady in manners and education and ambassadors noted at how gracious she was as Queen

The best portrayls of Elizabeth were Glenda Jackson, Helen Mirren and Anne Marie Duff to my memory. Cate Blanchett also did very well in the role despite several inaccuracies in Elizabeth and the golden age, they were still at least enjoyable. Margot Robbie was miscast in my opinion.That whole film is trash.

Ironically Tamzin Merchant’s hair in the opening credits and all promotions look reddish brown, so it’s as if they changed the hair colour last minute for the show or the lighting made it look different.

It's entertainment, Hollywood! The Tudors was full of errors of history. They are going to fill in the blanks and change facts. Yes, it was ridiculous when you consider all the fuck ups. In my opinion, English history did not need any of this added to it. However, I watched it and enjoyed it very much. And this led me to the real story.... I have been hooked on "real" Tudor history since I watched the Tudors, among other historical periods and facts. Enjoyed your rant anyway ;)

What are your feelings on Wolf Hall on the whole?
@The_Laughing_Cavalier6 жыл бұрын
Been a while since I have seen it, but from what I remember they at least made a bit more effort with casting, costumes and sets (I believe they went to a fair few Tudor style houses to film). I disagreed with some of the portrayals of people like Sir Thomas More and Anne Boleyn at times (although they were basing it off of the books so you have to allow for that) but it wasn't a bad effort. Might have to give it a proper review at some point.

@@The_Laughing_Cavalier That would be awesome! I also had some "Hmmm, this seems a little off" moments when watching it, but my history isn't exactly amazing, so it'd be nice to see what someone who puts in the research feels about it in depth lol

Absolutely concur. It’s a fantasy romp riffing off history. It’s departure from historical accuracy is so blatant and broad that I could accept it for what it is and go along for the ride. The Tudors on the other hand pretends to history while utterly mangling it - unwatchable.

I'm not as bothered by The Tudors changes to Katherine, mostly the hair (it's just hair color. I just can't be bothered to care about that) and I think it's pretty clear why they cast an actual adult that just looked young (it's HBO. I it's clear why they did this. To avoid breaking laws about lewd scenes involving children). And her acting modern is annoying, I agree, but it's kind of par for the course with that show lol However, what REALLY bothers me about it, is that they make her seem like she's a bad person, a floozy, just taking advantage of men and like she deserved what she got. It's sickening. So, I very much agree with you that the other portrayal was much more accurate, and sends a clear message about how the men in power used the women and girls in their lives as assets in their power plays. They weren't even treated as people. Poor girl had no choice and did the best she could in an impossible situation.
@trishareddy25704 жыл бұрын
Reign should have just gone through the effort of world building instead of using real history. It’s already inaccurate anyway

TO BE HONEST I quite like *SOME* aspects of the Tudors. I think everyone gets hung up on Jonathan Rhys Myers SO NOT looking like Henry VIII and miss a really fascinating portrayal of a very confusing and mercurial monarch. Certainly they zeroed in on his religious obsession and i think seasons one and two are almost redeemable, all things considered.
