Yep. Myth posing as fact. But I think we now have a generation of gamers who prefer the myths. That's sad. In fact the M4, and M3 Medium before it, were no more likely to catch fire than any other petrol-driven AFV when penetrated by an APHE round. There was certainly an issue with ALL British tanks during the early war years, and especially in the Western Desert campaign. Early on, British tank crews tended to be a bit sloppy when it came to leaving oily rags lying around places like engine bays, which was a fire risk. Better training and crew discipline helped mitigate that risk. Italian tank crews were also notorious for this. But the main issue, certainly in the Western Desert, was the British habit of what was sometimes called "bombing up". This was the practice of loading up more main gun ammunition than would normally be carried in the vehicle's internal racks. Now there was an excuse for this, as re-supply could often be problematic in the middle of an intense battle. But the downside was that packing in more main gun rounds outside of the protective storage racks meant that a penetrating APHE hit would almost certainly result in an ammunition fire. And one only has to look at the rapidity and intensity of such a fire on modern Russian AFVs in Ukraine, to see that it gives crews very little chance to escape.
