I got called that "morally abhorrent " a few times on my instagram over covid , just for being a trans woman into table top gaming , posting my crazy warhammer conversion models of orks/necrons and random stuff . :) Some of the hobby community is truly vile in how they get really nasty/aggressive/threatening at people , especially over games ultimately .. Hey Guy, jumping in on that last part, the "historicals controversy": as a historical wargamer, I think you addressed valid points. Goonhammer last year put out a far more scathing article on the topic (which was similarly received, I guess), and the reality remains: some people in the Historical community don't want to hear anything even slightly critical of some aspects of their hobby. I can give tons of examples about this, so many I feel confident in saying it's one of the community's blindspots (namely, reading a mild critique/analysis and automatically jumping to the conclusion you're calling them nazis). It worries me that you think you "messed up" just because you got 50% split on likes/dislikes. That's not a fair metric. Whenever you put your opinions on a controversial topic, you'll get dislikes. If it ruffles some feathers, you'll get many dislikes! That's the reality of life whenever saying something that isn't bland and uncontroversial. Finally, I'm appalled that you got death threats. I knew about the speculations on your personal life, and that's none of anybody's business. But death threats? People are deranged.

Your second paragraph hits the nail on the head. Sadly, the life of a KZbinr means making videos that are not just viewed but that have an excellent ‘like’ ratio. And as a consequence, KZbinrs are incentivised to avoid topics that generate actual conversation or put out videos containing nothing but the most milquetoast opinions. I’m not advocating for Guy to ignore this fact and stir debate with potentially polarising takes because I appreciate that this is his living. But it irks me that the bargain that one must make is ‘keep your head down or be buried by morons’. Such an ecosystem will naturally tend toward blandness. Regardless, MWM is such a good channel that I have faith that Guy has the talent to succeed in navigating this puzzle with engaging content nevertheless. as a generic wargamer i'm going to quickly jump on the historical wargame shenanigans, i play as the germans in a wargame called "flames of war" now i quite honestly don't feel comfortable playing as them usually, but im in love with the unique german combat doctrine and the looks of the models, but i don't think it's justified to harrass a innocent... guy, its honestly disguisting what people are capable of and i feel really sorry for anyone who has fallen victim to all these... mindless individuals who think their actions don't have an effect on the people they harrass in real life! i really hope everything is going okay now since you're my idol! my whole warhammer carreer is thanks to you and i know this might sound weird, or look weird but im really thankful for opening my eyes to warhammer and everything else!

Your battle reports are some of the very best on KZbin; I'm always excited when one comes out. The deathmatch was fun to watch and coincided with my introduction to the tabletop game. I'd be so stoked to see them again, even if far less frequent. I always cleaned house and got beverage/cleared my next half-hour whenever I saw one of those videos. The voice over, editing, narrating, and overall aesthetic quality is top notch.

On the historical wargaming, you were very clear in your video. Honestly this is not on you. You absolutely did not mess up! I saw the "discourse" from day one and people seem to deliberately twist what was said to make their "anti-woke" argument. Hey Guy, that's my 2 cts on that, just a thought. Your video about historicals was on the mark. Some armies are both popular and deeply problematic, and real war has scarred societies. Some people are still around from the conflicts we play, be that ww2, 6days or Vietnam. It is natural to be uncomfortable around the idea to play real bad guys, as opposed to fictional ones. That was your point iirc. Now the part to make you uncomfortable, not by intention, but I believe that your audience has a fringe. Not your fault, this hobby attracts all sorts of people. This fringe, the same crowd I wager to go mental about female custodes and the other culture war nonsense, has within it a small group that would send you threats, spread lies and act on that. And you triggered them by voicing your thoughts. That's all it took. What I suggest, is to drive these people away by once in a while taking a harmless, inoffensive, but progressive stance. Like painting different shades of human skin, experimenting with female heads on models that are not canonically, but practically male only, and voicing concerns when dealing with mature material, even when you enjoy it. I believe your community will benefit from this, the controversy will be kept very limited and ultimately it will be financially neutral or advantageous. You seem to be a thoughtful man, so take that as you like. You will do great!

As a historical wargamer - there was nothing harmful, hateful or offensive about your video on historical wargaming. I thought it was a good take, and a thoughtful take on the subject. People want to be offended. IDK if its a new or old problem, but I think some people have no personal identity so they wrap the thing consume around them (IE sports, star wars, 40k, etc...). So any criticism of the thing they like is an attack on them.

RE: "the problem with historical wargames" video response - I think it's okay to say you're not comfortable with playing a certain faction that is playable for less than 13 years of tens of thousands of years of human history, a lot of people are not comfortable with that time period for many reasons and I would never fault anyone for not being interested in that particular period of history. I think it was a pretty big stretch to claim thats the fundamental problem with *all* historical wargames, including ancient and medieval wargames, is due to one faction, and I think a lot of the negative comments were probably focused on the title, the content, and the sponsorship being "out of sync" with each other and with the fundamental premise (N*zi's = bad, therefore all historical wargames are bad). I think the reason why historical wargames isn't as popular is because there are a lot of history nerds in the communities, who take pride in their knowledge, but at the detriment of creative decisions (like paint schemes, decal usage, among other things). I wouldn't go so far to say it's intentional gatekeeping, but it's certainly a downer to be told that your hard-work and effort with an assembled and painted Roman army "isn't historically accurate" for whatever reason. If it wasn't about historical accuracy, there'd be comments about how certain battles were supposed to go, or which army had better strategy, etc. , which is hard for anyone new to a game to keep up with without being a history nerd too. It's hard to break into certain historical wargaming groups because of that mentality, which comes across as purist or almost elitist. In Warhammer, you can paint whatever you want and however you want, as long as you're respecting lore, but even then, MOST people aren't going to chew you out for the wrong decals or paint schemes.

my personal opinion re: the bolt action video is you had nothing to really apologize for there was nothing said in there that wasn't reasonable and people need to bloody get a grip and learn to deal with un-comfy feelings around historical wargaming. The fact that people are sending death threats over bloody toy soldiers is pretty abhorrent especially when it is over voicing the logical concerns some people might have considering you are representing real events where real people suffered and died. It is perfectly ok to be interested in the wars and want to play games around them, lord knows I have since I was a kid, but it should be done with a certain amount of mindfulness that this isn't fantasy and for many people of a generation dubbed the greatest, it was hell. If anything it is the historical wargaming community that should be apologizing to you not the other way around. Anyway sorry you were attacked like that, you do great content that helps me keep going in my hobby endeavours hope things continue to improve for you going forward.

@@MidwinterMinis One of the boxes I have is the Alpha strike box, comes with both fighting sides (clan and inner sphere) and have simplified rules, so if anybody is interested, they don't need to buy anything. In the second box I have there are hard cardboard cutouts of the same mechs are in the box, so if anyone wants to try it, no need to buy anything. But somehow noone is interested to try it. :(

I've loved Battletech for 30 years. I use the Alpha Strike rules as an intro. Easy to understand, quick to play and really the only way to do massive games without spending days on them. Alpha Strike is different than the 'classic' Battletech rules. Don't let someone gate that Alpha Strike is not Battletech. Alpha Strike rules, what terrain you already have, a couple mechs and get the dice rolling. Then you'll have played Battletech.

I don't agree with your conclusion on your historical war gaming video. I think it's important to discuss these topics. It's unfortunate that people had such a negative reaction. I agree that the video was poorly framed and sometime factually inaccurate. Defining German/Axis troops as Nazi's is a bit misinformed, for example. But overall I disagree with you. I game with people who actively avoid WW1/2 games. Why can't we have that conversation. There are reasons for this. I also think that discussing these important times in history is critically important. It's unfortunate that you feel that you can't talk about difficult topics, without this backlash. Quite frankly, I don't care about your sponsors. I think some people are a just stirring the cesspit. My suggestion, for it's worth, is to be a bit more informed before releasing this type of video. I think not producing this type of video, is not the correct decision. However, I understand why you came to this conclusion, given some peoples response. That way you will likely not walk into these traps. I find it constantly worrying, that some people are irresponsible and don't care about others. I categorically disagree with other videos, like that produced by Mordian Glory. We should be discussing these issues. Only because you mainly focus on gaming, and paining, doesn't mean you can't talk about other topics. Shutup and sit down did a review on John Company board game. I encourage everyone to watch this video. This painted the issues around this topic very well. The game itself highlights some problematic behavior in history. Its critically important not to put push history under the rug. A great deal of board games do this. It's unfortunate that people think that you shouldn't be able discuss these topics. I hope that you continue to do so. Otherwise we will just be looking at everything through rose tinted glasses and conveniently forgetting or ignoring what actually happened. We should challenge ourselves and each other, but we should be supportive at the same time. We all make mistakes from time to time. Lets not pretend to be perfect. We don't make progress from quitting. We make progress by trying. I didn't proof read this, so sorry if there is some bad grammer in here. I think its a real shame that people can't be more supportive and more positive.

As I said in that video's comments, I'll say again: I'm the grandchild of a Holocaust survivor and an avid miniature/scale model collector, and depicting/playing WW2 Germany is fine along with having an opinion on said depiction. There is a wide berth to dock your stances and depictions regarding this subject, if anyone has the right to wave off oncoming vessels, it is me. If you don't like playing as or depicting warmachines or armies associated with the funny moustache man, that is fine. If you do and go so far as applying even the controversial but still historical symbols, that is also fine. If you are in the middle (like me) and want to play with cool plastic, resin, or metal models/minis of the aforementioned regime but draw the line at applying demonetization wheels; that is again fine. What isn't fine is harassing people and making them fear for their and their associates' wellbeing over a silly youtube video. Peace from the US.

I think your bolt action video was well done. I just went and re-watched it before writing this comment and I don’t see anywhere where you accused anyone of being a Nazi. You only pointed out the truth that there are some questionable individuals that are a little too obsessed with the German army. We even encounter those people in 40K. They get a little too obsessed with the imperium and start to idolize it. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with mentioning those things. It was actually one of my favorite videos because it encouraged me to get into Bolt action. Personally, I think I like the Russians best because I find their armor the most fascinating. My girlfriend is interested in the Germans, for similar reasons. I’m sorry you were endangered and harassed for simply speaking the truth. The fact that people took such strong offense to it is more telling about them than anything. You pointed out a thing, that can create discomfort in the real world. It was very clear you didn't think that it was necessarily wrong to use that imagery in a historical war game. The catalyst people are so cool the first time I met them at adepticon, Randal Bill gave me a patch, Micheal Stockpole signed a book for me and played a game of Battletech with Russel Zimmerman. They were all wonderful.
