It's interesting how different versions of Carbon handled the crew members winning the race very differently. On PC and home consoles, if your crewmate wins the race, you win the race. On GBA, your crewmate is basically considered traffic and it doesn't matter if it crosses the finish line or not. On DS and PSP, you lose the race if your crewmate finished before you.

This game is a blast, I would play it every night "real quick" (I stayed up till 3am everytime) during the the summer and it was great. The music whilst not exactly screaming "speed", still felt fitting and was a bop to listen to. I also really liked how the cutscenes were all drawn, I even made a whole drawing of Carter based on the concept art. I didn't have too many problems with the wingmen til the endgame, but I totally remember them just crashing into a guard and just staying there. I feel you could've talked more on the difficulty at the end, I am 100% convinced the last lap knockouts are IMPOSSIBLE. Im glad you made a little review on the game :)

There is another non-main line NFS which i recall being quite good when i was younger that was on PSP, called NFS Underground Rivals. The garage in the game was really cool, with different garage styles: cars being parked in garage sets, and on lifts or fancy parking spaces, pretty cool stuff ngl.

The biggest flaw in this version is the start of the game, IT'S REALLY SLOW. But when you reach the half of the game, it turns into a kinda fun side-game No, it's not the hardware's fault, the DS version (despite being limited in many areas) still has a better sense of speed compared to own the city on PSP

Probably the best story in NFS. If only the map was purely original. Either way, I loved this game to bits. Even went out of my way to get and upgrade every car. This is a game definitely worth a remake or remaster.

Prostreet DS was great, probably one if the most realiatic racing game on DS. Its got a better damage model than the regular Prostreet.

Carbon on Ds has great customization, good graphics, better sense of speed compared to the PSP and GBA versions and some need for speed Underground 1 maps. Pro Street is really impressive, it has more customization than the PSP version, has many maps from the original game, and it's shocking how faithful this version is.

A good retrospective on one of the best NFS games, you are right to say this feels like the lost Black Box NFS game. I played this on the DS in my childhood and it was, and still is, fantastic as a racing game on that console. If anyone's thinking of trying it, PPSSPP is very easy to set up and you'll have a great time of it.

I think I played the Nintendo DS version of this game when I was a kid. Because some or a lot of the story scenes you showed in the video looked very familiar. It was a long time ago so I can't remember the exact details and such. I had one of those * ahem * not so legal cards where you could put multiple games on it. So I also had some other NFS games on it.

EA Vancouver/Canada had both Black Box and Team Fusion (PSP NFS port teams) under their roofs at that time, maybe that's the reason of seeing a lost link to a Black Box game. (EA Canada was the ones which had developed the first four NFS BTW). What made this game memorable for me was the plot, YET at first after finishing ... i couldn't care less for the whole betrayal, Sara, Buddy, EX and the Player's deal, but later i got myself thinking how the plot was something unexpected for that time in a NFS, and man that was a difference, it's interesting how they decided to take this route at that time and still by nowadays a route which they didn't tried to "copy" to recent NFS unlike other plots/stories. It's insane how those NFS for PSP evolved, i did expected Carbon to be more crispier considering the system's limitation, and how U-Rivals and MW 510 performed, but i was surprised at that time how this game was actually good and i got the same feels to the Pro Street port. Those PSP's NFS are easily among the best PSP racing games: MC3 PSP, GTPSP and Burnout Legends are the only other games which are on the same level of Carbon: Own The City.

NFS 2 SE is a unicorn. Best NFS game and most unique. NFS 2 SE is completely different racing game in Blackbox franchise. Golden era. Mostly forgotten NFS game. Don't play PS and Xbox version! Please play on pc version because pc version is upgraded version. If you want best experience play on windows XP.

I would recommend try out NFS: High Stakes (Or "Road Challenge" in Europe version) and Porsche Unleashed, which has interesting game mechanics. You get a suspension damage from jumping. The gameplay in NFS Porsche Unleashed does feel like a simcade style game, where you can easily get spun out on higher performance cars. (same damage style as previous NFS High Stakes) Aside, that was nice vid btw.

If you’re looking for more NFS games, it doesn’t look like you’ve covered the pre-Blackbox era. Some really interesting stuff happened. The original, a sim driving game commissioned by Road and Track magazine in 94, was originally for the Panasonic 3DO. NFS 2 took criticism about not being arcadey enough way too literally (I’ve played the PlayStation version, it hasn’t aged well). NFS 3, the original Hot Pursuit was known for being a landmark of advancement in PC gaming, and somehow not only was there a PlayStation port, it was pretty damn good. NFS High Stakes, which on the PC was just Hot Pursuit with new content and new graphics engine, was completely overhauled on the PlayStation, and despite running at a kind of low framerate, played really way. You have Porsche Unleashed which was amazing on PC but had a kind of broken PS1 port. And I don’t know it was also branded this way in South America, but in North America the first two V-Rally games were published by electronic arts, as Need for Speed: V-Rally, except for the Dreamcast version of V-Rally 2 which was under the Test Drive brand. NFS hadn’t come into its own as a street racer yet, but was hyper focused on bleeding edge super cars, and honestly the aesthetic from 98-2000 is incredible. Might be worth doing a video on the original 5, and maybe the V-Rally franchise too
