I had not done any laundry in a week. My husband and kids were "helping" but they do it differently and it was a mess. While watching this video I managed to bring it back to order. I put all the clean towels and blankets in the bathroom closet, took most of the clean laundry to the rooms, empty the dryer, sweep the floor and started a load. I need to do a load per day and put it away to keep it manageable.

I’ve changed my meal planning technique. I now just have a list, not even necessarily in order, of 4 meals I’d like to make that week to be sure I have my ingredients. I typically make double what my family needs and freeze left overs in serving size increments so that on the busy nights, we pull what we want for dinner out of the freezer
@cristinas4398
@cristinas4398 7 ай бұрын
Hi Joyful Homemaker! May I ask how you store the individual servings in the freezer? My Mom always froze this and that, but now I'm finding out it's not always as straightforward as I'm expecting! I followed instructions to chop up a celery and lay it flat in a gallon Freezer slider bag, but when I thawed it out to use it, it was limp and watery. I want to freeze leftovers like spaghetti or whatever, but I'm scared I'll ruin it and we barely scrape by so I can't afford to experiment right now. If I were to freeze individual servings in plastic containers, that would get expensive. Any suggestions?
@joyfulhomemaker8053
@joyfulhomemaker8053 7 ай бұрын
@@cristinas4398 I use quart size ziplock freezer bags and try to flatten out of the meal if possible. It’s easier to thaw and store as well. If I take it out at the last minute, I can peel the bag away from the food to heat it on a plate too

I have had to come to the fact that my home will probably never be as neat as yours, because while I am homemaking, I also run a 200-acre small scale farm with swine, sheep, vegetable crops, cattle, and poultry. I do feel that if I wasn't doing that, I would have plenty of time for the house! For now, as long as the floors are swept and the dishes are done, I'll have to be satisfied. Your videos do help me find the motivation to get some cleaning done after a day outside.

I found everything became easier and I had enough time when I stopped sitting down to watch tv. I haven’t had a tv for 18 years now. I use that time for a quick tidy before bed and for self care. Reading a book. One of my friends said she just doesn’t have enough time. I asked her how much tv she watched the previous night. She said three hours….🤷🏼‍♀️. Three hours of just sitting. The thing I found to really help me with 3 little ones was to get up before the family. That way I had time for some coffee, toss a load of laundry in, read, whatever, without someone underfoot. Also my kids were in bed by 7. Yes SEVEN. They didn't have to sleep but they went down. Those 2 habits plus naps saved my sanity. My 18 year old got upset that she was being told to take a nap (she's grown, you know), I told her to take a book in there and lie down. She was knocked out 10 min later. LOL. Naps for everyone - me included! Laundry was sorted using of each (blue/black/white) laundry baskets and as my children stripped down for baths, they learned to sort their clothes. Hang everything that is hangable. When get up, smooth the sheets and make the bed. Cooking was 2 crock pots on rotation. One cooking the other waiting in the fridge.

That is a part of it but it does change and then you feel differently. I have stumbled onto photos from the 70’s. Nothing in a home was perfect in those days. I watch these videos now, because I have the time! 10 years ago I wouldn’t I’d have had family meals to cook, housework or laundry to do. I had to plan, plan and plan some more. One of my daughter in law’s is always complaining about not having enough time to do this or that, but I also know she spends hours every day on social media. Not working doing videos etc just watching and making herself feel bad because she hasn’t done all the things that she sees others doing. One day she will realise that those hours she wastes on social media are the time she has to do all the things. I hope so any way. I use also a lot more social media then before I had my kid, and I think a lot comes from a feeling of overwhelm - and no real outlet to that. I used to read books, but I feel I don't have the consecutive, uninterrupted hours to immerse myself in a story, and not the mental capacity to deal with all my challenges at once. I think once those are sorted out, getting housework organised will be way easier. What I am trying to say is, maybe using social media (excessively) is a sign of someone struggling, and that needs to be addressed before the time can be used in a more productive way...

Great video! I so agree. I just can’t imagine not having enough time in the day to get the basics done. Yes my family is raised, but through those years we made it work. We never had a “disaster” home. We had a few rules, and it made everything go pretty smooth. We didn’t have social media to get ideas from. You walked into your girlfriend’s house and said, “so how do you keep the kids toys organized?” Or “can I look in your hall closet and see how you organized it?” That’s how we learned new things. We would have a school cookbook every few years, and only the best of the best gets out in there, so they were total winners. I still cook some of them today! But women need to know, if there isn’t enough time, especially for the SAHM, they might want to consider looking deeper into their habits and routines. There is always a way. Baby steps! They’ll get there.

You can’t work full time and keep the house clean unless you work like a mad woman. I used to really stress to keep things perfect but now that I am 79, I realize I wasted a lot of my life trying to make things perfect. I didn’t have a husband at home all day. I worked outside the home and spent 10 hours a day gone. Sunday was church twice a day and church Wednesday night. Ugh

The Flylady system of zone cleaning has really helped me let go of my perfectionism in housecleaning. I work in one zone, 15 minutes per day for a week, then I move onto the next zone the next week. I am able to focus on what I am doing that week and let go of the other dirt I see because I know I will be handling it another week during the month. My house is not picture perfect, but I feel like I am keeping up .

I’m loving your channel even though I’m no longer raising a family. Anyways, thanks for the video. People have no idea anymore what a difference a mom at home makes. Once my sister and I were grow we realized how much we wished our mom had been at home when we got home from school.

This is a great video. Mama to nine here. ❤️ Two things that also eat up a homemaker’s day (and they ARE blessings, but take TIME) are home educating and homesteading. It truly is a skill when you can balance well all three. It takes years to learn if it hasn’t been modeled for you when young. Even in survival mode, the basics of laundry, meals, etc. can be done. I will never forget Ruth Ann Zimmerman’s quote about making sure the emotional needs of her family are met FIRST. Before homesteading and doing anything extra (sourdough, sewing, etc.), making sure their emotional needs come first is essential. I love seeing Biblical Homemaking being brought back into the culture as a priority!! ❤️ Many blessings!

Yes!!!! I agree. I used to say all the time “I don’t have enough time” but really it was that I chose to spend my time on the wrong things. God gives us plenty of time to do the things that need to be done, time to spend time with him, time for our family, and time for ourself. We are not managing it well if we don’t have time. Social media and my phone is a HUGE time killer. A while back I challenged myself to spend 1 week using all the time I usually spend on social media on my home and family. It was absolutely mind blowing. My home was spotless. School lessons were complete early. I had extra time to spend with the kids and my hubby. I was happier and less stressed. I’ve considered deleting social media. It’s a time sucker. I don’t even like it. I do enjoy listening to you tube or audio books while I work though. ❤

Sock tip, don’t have so many different socks. Buy one type of sock that will fit several kids in bulk, so you don’t have to match! Girls and boys can wear the same socks, just pick a neutral color. My husband and I both wear the same black socks. And I always buy more of that same kind, so every sock matches every other sock.

Such good advice for people that are 'in the trenches'. I am in a season now where I can piddle around and spend more time on things but back in the day, just getting things done was 'perfect' enough. One thing I notice, even now, is that when I see something that needs to be done instead of putting it off I guess how long it will take to just do it. Sometimes it literally takes 2 minutes to just handle something and then its out of your mind. I also really like to write lists and cross things off, I can't stand having a running to do list in my head~ if it's on paper its less stressful for some reason. And yeah, bleach is a strong chemical but sometimes its necessary to get something really clean.

I wish it was just too much "stuff" to manage but I have minimized my home as much as I could. If all I had to do was care for my home and the people in it I would have no issue, but I also work close to full time hours from home and we just started homeschooling. I know I will get to the place where this newness and chaos will feel natural for me and under control but I still get overwhelmed here at times in the now. And I'm accepting that it's ok and a part of my current life I just take a moment and work though those feelings and move on.

I’ve never had problems keeping up with laundry and had hired a housekeeper that cleaned my house a couple of times. I thought I needed her bc I worked full time with 4 children. I didn’t want her to see my house dirty so I cleaned before she came. That’s when I realized I didn’t need her. With 6 people living in our home, I decided we could all do our part to keep the house clean. So we set some rules and never really had a problem afterwards. I’ve been decluttering and I feel so much better

A couple things I thought of, as I raised three children, not quite as many as you have: teach your kids to clean up after themselves, put their toys away, push in their chairs and maybe you need to buy a dishwasher? Not sure if your house has room for one? You should definitely not be hand washing dishes with that many kids. I also taught my kids how to do their own laundry with supervision when they were about 10, worked great! My kids were folding their own laundry when they were three, with supervision and putting away their own clothes. While it takes a while to teach kids how to do these things it really frees up your time and teaches them responsibility. I'd ditch the white chair covers and get a darker color. White and 8 kids not a good match. Preventing work is great!

I chose not to have a dishwasher. I didn't like my dishes being held hostage for hours in there & the noise of it running (even with insulation for sound deadening). It was an added expense, more water & more power etc because we still had to at least rinse the food off the dishes before putting them in. Also, with a small kitchen I didn't want to give up a 2 foot base cabinet of storage. With 4 kids I only had to do dishes a few times per week as everyone took turns. I do kinda miss being able to hide the dirty dishes (rather than having visual clutter of a drying rack). Now that we are close to empty nest I could see enjoying the luxury of a dishwasher in our next kitchen remodel, but I would want it raised up some for my back strain.:)

I was raised we did a deep clean on Saturdays then on Wednesday we called it a touch up. So I followed the same after I got married. Always cleaned my stovetop after we ate every night. I followed everything to a tee on how I was raised and at times it stressed me out too much. I’d get on my hands and knees after each meal and washed the floors. I never relaxed. Saturday was my deep clean day and wash all the sheets and towels then it felt good when the beds were all done for the week. I always felt like if I was deep cleaning on Saturday I didn’t want to shake towels and sheets due to more dust. Got on my hands and knees and cleaned under the beds, dressers and baseboards. I could go on but as you see I drove myself crazy keeping a perfectly clean house and that’s how I lived at home. I was definitely on a schedule most all my life raising the children. Ofcourse a homemade supper and baked pies or some dessert. I’m 69 and still having a hard time relaxing about a lot of things but ofcourse I can’t get on my knees anymore to do the floors. 😅 Those days did fly away.

Something you don’t talk about much in your videos (that I envy you for) is that you and your family (for the most part) eat REAL food. You don’t have all the antibiotics, hormones, pesticides and fake ingredients like most of the population. You can see it on your face…your skin is so healthy. I bet that your kids won’t have to deal with with ADHD and all of these other mental health problems out there due to the ingestion of harmful things in our food. People really should pay more attention to this. I bet if I were to spend a month on your farm, eating the food you do, I would feel like a totally different person. As it is, I feel awful after I eat a meal, which is my own fault. I have no energy and don’t feel like doing much. I am going to make changes by making my own sauerkraut and keeffer for starters. Kudos to you…I’m proud of you! ❤

I keep track of weather temps and events and also maybe something I might be thinking about, garden planting design, car wash, wipe cabinets etc. If it's written down then I don't feel the panic at night thinking of all the things I forgot.
