Arriving at Kings Cross just before 15:00, I found that LNER services were severely disrupted due to an earlier incident near Newark. A service from Leeds had come to a stand due to power supply issues leading to delays and cancellations on the southbound ECML. Eventually Kings Cross ran out of trains so the down service was then affected. I stayed for an hour to observe the valiant efforts of staff to get services away to as many destinations as possible.

I encountered similar problems at Doncaster on October 9th. A train fire at Darlington caused major disruption to southbound trains while someone deciding to end it all at Newark did likewise northbound. The ECML has had more than it's share of bad luck recently.

Unfortunately, I had the pleasure of trainspotting at Leeds at this very time, and could never figure out why there was literally no LNER for the 1.5 hours that I was there?!!... I was hoping to see some 43s or 91s...!

I appreciate the high resolution of your videos. They are easy to watch. 💯 on the captions! Old Yankee ears have trouble with background “noise” and tend to listen with an accent, but I read really well.

Nice to see the new LNER Azuma Class 800 and Class 801. As well the Class 91 Mk4 and Class 43 Mk3 HST which are soon to be replaced. Great Northern Class 700, Class 365 and Class 387 Electrostar, Hull Trains and Grand Central Class 180 Adelantes. Sad that the Class 313 are no longer in service as Class 717 have replaced them.

Is it sad, though? I'm very happy that crappy old trains are being taken off the rails.

Dear Friend: I am going to travel to England next year and since I am a railroad fan, I want to know that station near London allows me to observe trains at high speed. Sincerely, Fausto Brindisi from Argentina

I know that there's website with all the timetables and what locomotive is forming which train etc, but how tf do you get information like "The expected stock for this service didn't get past Peterborough. Luckily there was a unit available at Bounds Green"???????????
@BoogiesTrains
@BoogiesTrains 4 жыл бұрын
By looking at Realtime Trains for the same day of the following week I can see what the expected allocation of platforms for arriving and departing trains is. This allows me to make an educated guess at the planned allocation of stock on the day. I can then compare this to what actually happened to see the difference. In one of my videos of the DC lines there is an empty unwell Pendolino on the down slow. By working back I could work out which service it had arrived on and then see how other units had been shuffled around to fill the gap caused by its non availability for its next scheduled working. I think I did something similar in another of my ECML videos, possibly Harringay.

Sure 182 minutes sounds less painful than three hours!!!🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪 Hey I can understand the cancelling of departures but the cancelling of arrivals leaves me puzzled… does that mean that some trains departed and will never arrive-- or maybe in the fifth dimension?
@BoogiesTrains
@BoogiesTrains 4 жыл бұрын
Departures couldn't run as there was no stock available, due to the arrivals all being stuck behind the failed train at Newark. Once things were running some inbound trains had to be terminated short at, for example, Peterborough so that the stock and crew could get to where they were needed next. It is very rare these days for an arrival at any of the London terminii to go to the depot out of service. Most go out very soon after arrival as another service. It is like a multi-dimensional jigsaw with trains, crew and track/platform capacity all having to be in sync. When there is a problem with an incoming train there is very little in the way of spare stock to make up for it.

A bit scary, I´ll be flying in from Sweden Nov 29th, to immediately travel on from King´s Cross to York and the NRM and Railcam gathering

We have had a lot of rain over the past ten days which has caused widespread problems. It is all to do with the usual cooling of the northern part of the North Atlantic and the warm air coming up from further south. It has been a bit extreme this year. Hopefully we will be a bit more settled by the end of the month. Your train to York my be an HST or a 225 or an Azuma, depending on the final destination. The journey to York is very interesting and usually comfortable. The city is also worth exploring.

@@BoogiesTrains thanks! Yes, I look forward to York. Railcam 10th anniversary gathering and one or two visits to the NRM is at hand. Travel will be a GC (class 180 I hope) on the way north and an Azuma on the way south.. Maybe also a short ride with an hst, to try it before they are being taken off duty.

Why dont the staff just say "All Aboard?" Very strange they dont do that in the UK
@BoogiesTrains
@BoogiesTrains 4 жыл бұрын
That would need enough staff on each platform or train to make the call heard. We don't have that level of staffing. Guards have always used whistles as the sound can be clearly heard above the general noise and other chatter on the platform. I remember being surprised on a commuter train out of Penn Central in New York to find that every carriage seemed to have its own conductor. Many of our commuter services only have a driver on board.

Hi. The Hitachi IETs are the new stock. They are classes 800, 802, and 802. The LNER units are branded as Azuma, which is Japanese for East, because they operate on the East Coast Main Line. All the classes come in 5 & 9 car variations. 800 and 802 are bi-mode 25 Kv electric or diesel. The different class numbers originally distinguished between available diesel power but they are all the same now. Class 801 is electric power only although they do have a small emergency generator set so that they can escape a power failure at low speed.

Also new on the southern end of the ECML are the Siemens class 717 inner suburban units. They take a different route south of Finsbury Park so are not routinely seen at Kings Cross. They have featured in a couple of my previous videos and will appear again in one I am working on.

Boogies Trains Thanks for talking back. I am a countryside guy- not a train guy- yet, but I do like to know what’s new. It would be really hard for a newbie Yank to learn all the classes. TTTT, I don’t know all the operators, but I am getting there. I started with Hastings Diesels so they were easy. The rest are coming a bit dry....

On of my previous videos is a slide show of the Southern region in the 70s which includes some shots of the Hastings Diesels in every day service. The quality is not so good but they were my favourite at the time. So distinctive.
