Amazing journey. I had no idea this was possible on a single service. Have done both the Whitby to Middlesbrough section and the Newcastle to Carlisle section. To see the entire route was stunning. I particularly enjoyed the footage along the Tyne. Always look forward to your videos, the wait is worth it!

Thanks for watching - appreciated. Cheers, the curry train is a good idea, never taken it but i know a few who have, the only advice i'd give is as they use a public train dont go on Newcastle match days, the trains are rammed!? My annual leave renews in January so i'll be planning on a few trips in the new year, but until then i have a couple of things planned.

You deserve a medal, almost 5 hours on a class 156 is not a pleasant way to travel. The journey is very scenic and Northern should really market this journey and put on rolling stock more suitable to the length of the journey.
@TheGeordieTravels3 ай бұрын
Hi mate, thanks for watching - appreciated. For the length of time they should put a better rolling stock on but luckily it was a nice day which made the journey all that better.

The first time I travelled on a 156 was Sheffield to Norwich in 1988. It took about 3½ hours. The full journey was Liverpool to Norwich, which is 5h20 at least. They also did the Glasgow to Malaig a few years ago (maybe still do.} Again, over 5 hours. I got the impression in British Rail days that they were intended for long distance regional journeys. Also, I doubt that very many people would do the full trip from Whitby to Carlisle. Besides, when I travelled on that route on a bank holiday Monday in 2019, it was a very crowded pacer from Whitby to Newcastle. I'd sooner travel on a 156 any day.

Great video. The longest journey I've travelled on a 156 was from Lancaster to Carlisle via the Cumbrian Coast route at nearly 4 hours. The Northern 156s are adequate but I really think they should have had carpets fitted when they were refurbished.

Yes the S in Gosmount is silent so you pronounce it "gromount"
@TheGeordieTravels3 ай бұрын

Excellent video! Most people do shorter parts of the route so I guess there’s little incentive to upgrade the rolling stock much. That said, if the seats were better and they offered catering then they might get more long distance passengers!

Considering the vast majority of people will be using this train for less than half of its route, the 156 is somewhat tolerable. There's a similar issue with the service from Liverpool to Norwich, which runs 158s. Also I was shocked how much faster driving is.
@timbounds71903 ай бұрын
I admire your patience - I'd be screaming to get off!!! You managed to make the Durham Coast Line seem reasonably attractive! Personally when I've ridden that line, I've found my will to live fading rapidly after Hartlepool! Wasn't helped by the fact that the train didn't do more than 15mph all the way from East Boldon into Newcastle!

What about the Sunday only Carlisle to Nottingham?As the crow flies Carlisle to Nottingham is certainly substantially further but then the Esk Valley line twists a bit.
@TheGeordieTravels3 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching - appreciated. It may be longer distance wise, I'm not sure but time wise Whitby to Carlisle is 5 minutes longer. I think the Sunday service arrives in Nottingham at around 8pm so logistically it was a bit harder to plan, especially as i didn't want an overnight stay.
