Tommy, Chuckie and Angelica were rescued from a very sick cat colony back in December 2022. They have since been nursed back to health (through the guidance of our veterinarian), and have all been adopted. Yes, kittens are messy. It just comes with the territory of fostering kittens, like Tommy.

Best thing is Lotsa contact. From experience with feral kittens, ignore Thier hissing & fear. Little regular snacks, formula if they need it & roughly 18/24 cuddles if you can manage. No more than 3 days see's them accepting pats, 5 days see's them curled up on the bed with you. Just override the fear response with contact, loving, food & familiarity. Kinda amazing how fast you become Mommy if you don't tolerate Thier speciesist behaviour & insist on contact & stroking, cuddling, feeding & playing with them. Don't draw it out. Adopt them firmly but lovingly. They get it just so quickly if you don't make it a long drawn out BS winning Thier trust exercise. They become adorable & trainable very quickly at this age. I had one not even weaned live in the hood of my hoodie for weeks during the day as I worked from home. Bottle fed & then Nom Nom food. Became a bit of a Marsupial really. Ok so my hoodies needed regular washing & kitten turds are nuclear disgusting, but they don't really like crapping in Thier nests, so soon give complaints. Turn the turds into the kitty Litter & place kitten there too. They're surprisingly quick to learn to warn you if you listen. In fact any fuss gets them quickly in the litter & bingo a new skill is learnt. I always loved people's expression in the grocery store when they realised I had a cute passenger. More than a few screaming toddlers got to kitten cuddle for 5 mins at the checkout lol.

When I was 12yrs old I found a litter of 5 feral kittens in an old shed on my uncles cattle ranch. Everyone told me to just leave them, but my older cousin helped me get them into a secure area in one of the barns,( one of them bit clear through his finger in the process) and I spent all my free time with them to get them over their fear of humans. Two weeks later I had to leave to go home; within a week my aunt called to let me know that they had all been adopted as family pets, except my favorite little Calico. My cousin decided to keep him, and he became the most snuggly lap cat ever. That began my life as a rescuer; I am 59 and the most foster babies I ever had at one time was 16 kittens and 4 young adults. I was living in a tiny 800sq ft apartment at the time, so it got a little crazy at times, but there is no sight or sound in the world that is more adorable than the thunder of 64 little feet all chasing a laser pointer around the house. Thank you so much for being part of the solution! God bless you and your kind and generous heart.🫠

That little "Oh!" moment when they realize pets might not be so bad after all always slays me.
@trueriver195011 ай бұрын
It's not so much that they suddenly appreciate pets; it's more that they start off unsure whether you intend to give them love or violence. That cute "snuggle into" moment is the visible marker of the exact moment that trust begins. Sometimes this will be the first time they ever trusted a human. Sadly, sometimes their lives have taught them that some of us do not deserve their trust. Scientifically: that's when oxytocin (the so called "love hormone") gets released: it's the chemical signal that accompanies bonding among mammals, first to our parents, then to trusted friends and lovers, and then towards our children. When we watch a video like this, that "aw cute" feeling we get is also caused by an oxytocin rush.

My buddy and I caught a cat one time who went to live with him and got baaaaaaad separation anxiety when he left the room. Could just be going to the restroom…he didn’t care 😄 But I was working at this truck stop in the middle of nowhere and he was showing signs of abuse. Had a little spray paint remnants and his tail looked like someone cut it off. We tricked him in order to catch him and he cried the whole way home to his new home because he thought his time was up. He likes it when you dribble his butt on the seat cushion like a basketball. The first few weeks were pretty untrusting tho- he could never figure out where the cat was sleeping. Then he quickly started sleeping under his bed and is probably there right now.

I love the moment when kittens are so tensed up, and are crouched down in defense mode, because you're touching them, and slowly they realize that head-scritchies are not a bad touch. For those wondering: the eye thing you see the kittens in many of the shorts possessing is probably something like feline herpesvirus. It's very common in ferals especially and kinda just a given when dealing with them. Just like in humans they can live their life just fine provided they get the proper treatment. My current cat was formerly a friendly feral we found outside and has HPV; even with her compromised immune system her condition is never an issue and hard to even notice.

Feral cats are so fascinating. Depending on their age it's like there's some sort of switch in their brains that decides if they need to be feral or friendly to humans based on their survival conditions, but they are primed to seek out attention from humans. We just found some 3 week old kittens in our yard, abandoned given how eager they were to crawl out of their den and yell for food, but they responded to us IMMEDIATELY, hearing human voices, crawling all over us, suckling on hair and shirts. Scared and confused certainly, but no instinct to be angry or afraid. We have no idea if they had been close to humans before but presume they haven't, and maybe left alone for another week they would be feral, but I'm just so interested in their ability to change gears on that instinctual behavior. Seems to me like they really have evolved to trust humans as long as the conditions are there.

So heart warning to see a kitten enjoy affection for the first time. It calms their nerves and entrusts the good humans.
