Silverback male gorillas (SBs) lead their group’s movements, and they are preoccupied with protecting the females and their offspring from external dangers. One source of threat is other SBs, who might try to take over the resident SB’s group by force. For this reason, when SBs encounter each other, their relations are usually agonistic, with intimidation displays that can escalate to physical aggression.
For many animals, seeing their own reflection in a mirror can also elicit aggression. In a small corner of the Gabonese rainforest, several large mirrors have been installed for more than 8 years. At first, whenever he saw his reflection, this SB engaged in typical agonistic postures and chest beating displays, while avoiding direct eye contact with his “rival.” Now, after many encounters with his own reflection and those of the other members of his group, he still clearly remains tense and defiant, sometimes charging and chest-beating, repeatedly showing tension yawns, and mostly avoiding to look the rival in the eye. On this occasion, however, the SB also engages in several bouts of direct eye-contact, suggesting that he might be starting to understand that the SB in the mirror poses little real threat. The reflection never fully appears, it never vocalizes, and only imitates what the SB does. Maybe this wild adult male gorilla is learning that the reflection is not another gorilla, but himself. As in human infants and great apes in captivity, self-recognition is not innate; it must be learned. Other videos on this channel show examples of wild African great apes learning about optical properties of mirrors, including a young blackback male gorilla in the SB’s group, and several chimpanzees.

This is very interesting stuff and it's clear you're doing so much to ensure that the animals are as safe as possible and have actually increased the protection of the area with your experiments with mirrors and your recording equipment. I wonder if Silverbacks at this stage can learn mirror recognition if other members of his group point it out to him. That does seem to be the case with females and younger gorillas as they have no reservations about looking at their reflections in the eye.

Indeed, the other members of his group have already helped him in his reactions to his reflection. Watch my videos kzbin.info/www/bejne/qquTkqmNj9SkoMk and after kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYPFmGacdqplibc and you will see the result of this help because the silverback had already noticed the very different attitudes of the other members of his family towards their own reflection which he recognised in the mirror.* *_Case of gorilla babies_* In front of a mirror they are happy to discover a new playmate who takes pleasure in copying exactly every one of their own moves. They are very inquisitive exactly like youngs in humans. *_Case of a female gorilla_* In front of a mirror, she sees a female she has never seen before, a stranger? (her reflection): A new female for her husband, the silverback. Such are the male/female relationships in gorillas. So she doesn't know jealousy and she can quietly stay in front of her reflection and do her apprenticeship in the mirror which will allow her to recognize herself in her reflection. @@mariopejic5534 My wife and I are neither scientists nor veterinarians nor primatologists nor photographers. We wanted to thank Gabon, which has welcomed our family for more than 35 years (in the retail sector), to show on KZbin the diversity of the fauna of this beautiful country and to make Internet users want to visit it. Our first videos posted on our KZbin channel essentially showed wildlife "passing" in front of the lenses of our trap cameras equipped with motion detectors: The passage of an elephant in front of the objective of a trap for about twenty seconds is not particularly interesting. On the other hand, a video of young elephants playing in a river while adults are quenching their thirst is much more enjoyable to watch. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aompmIWhiMaYitU Elephant calves have fun during a creek crossing (Gabon jungle). To find such "spots" it is advisable to get further away from the path used by the few 4x4 vehicles of Nyonié, to go deeper into the forest and to walk in the beds of creeks and small rivers. This is not safe, especially when you are old. To progress more easily in the forest, animals use this off-road trail, without vines, bushes, brambles and trees mixed on the ground because of the very numerous tornadoes in this region on the Equator line. We came up with the idea of placing very large mirrors at the end of a long straight line of an off-road track to catch their eyes and "block" them in front of their image. We have also placed other mirrors under trees where numerous animals appreciate the fruits. At other locations in the middle of the forest it would have been very lucky for animals to meet their reflection. Our use of mirrors has been of great interest to primatologists, including members of the PSG, not the Paris Saint Germain football club, but the Primate Specialists Group, who have only been able to study self-recognition in a mirror in great apes in laboratories with captive animals or animals born in captivity, used to contact with humans. These animals did not have to search for food, defend their families against other congeners and predators, sometimes imitating humans, and therefore had very different distorted behaviours from primates living in complete freedom with their group or family in a remote area of Gabon's forest. Our cameras have highlighted a very particular behaviour among chimpanzees in the Nyonié region and resulted in a scientific publication, "Reflections in rainforest mirrors facilitate behavioral observations of wild chimpanzees Primates n°58 2017-01". On our two following videos this behavior is filmed: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqWweJaCp7ZkaKc (Rump-Rump Rubbing in Chimpanzees = anti-stress effect? A social behavior ever observed previously) and kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqfPmoekf5yCotE (scared chimps reassure themselves with pseudo-copulation and rump-to-rump contacts front of mirror). This is how, incidentally in wild animals, we discovered and became interested in their self-recognition in our large mirrors. Xavier, the word arousal doesn't mean to most people what you have put here. I understand as a medical professional you mean sympathetic arousal or a rise in emotional tension, but most viewers will think you mean sexual, which is not the behavior described of this gorilla. It may help to use another word! I think it's really cool what you are doing, by the way.

As you may have noticed we are not comfortably sitting in our armchairs, to publish without any description, pieces of videos copied from the Internet and put end to end. But we maintain our mirrors and numerous cameras traps, to change the SD, batteries, to clean the objectives, to remove the fallen branches in their field of vision, to go up on foot the bed of the marigots to find zones of crossing of animals to install new traps there etc... Drenched by tornadoes, the body covered with insect bites of all kinds (horseflies, gorilla flies, tsetse, black ants, magnan ants etc.) and unfortunately the number of cameras refusing to work increases because of the humidity rate of 95%. Then we do the editing of the videos and write a long description in English which is not our native language and then put them online to show the beauty of Gabonese fauna, talk about poachers, show how elephants who have managed to get away from a wire snare trap, treat the deep cut made by this trap, show how elephants pick mangos, self recognition in mirrors that is not innate both among humans than among primates and other mammals and so on...* It's a choice.. Keep watching my homemade videos (170 pieces) that I put online on my channel and read the description attached to each one of them. You will know very interesting explanations about animals reactions front of my mirrors in the jungle and share its link with your friends: kzbin.infovideos

*If a synthetic mirror is perfectly usable in a flat, on the other hand in the forest the different points of light created by the sun through the canopy, produce false reflections in the mirrors. Synthetic mirrors and reflective adhesive tapes do not stay flat in bad weather. Reflections are therefore distorted images. So I use glass 3 mirrors (83x120x0,5cm) that I glue, with double-sided adhesive, to a 22 m/m marine plywood fixed on a wooden frame with 4 legs and 4 buttresses at the back. These wild animals can go to these mirrors, as they see fit and stay in front of them, as long as they wish. They are not tied as dogs with leashes, locked as dog or cats in flats especially with dressing rooms equipped with a full-length mirror! They are not imprisoned for life in pens or cages with the distraction of watching visitors standing behind their fences or bars, eating the food they have neither picked nor hunted as Harambe (a silverback gorilla), born in captivity and dead 17 years later, still captive , killed by a bullet in his enclosure! *_No food is placed by humans next to mirrors to encourage them to come._* I would like to point out that among the wild animals meeting these mirrors placed in this remote region of Gabon, some seem happy to look at themselves in these mirrors: as these leopards: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHaTgoWcZ9Wdp8k kzbin.info/www/bejne/el6kkqVvh5qdmLs as these chimpanzees: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGWboX2GZ52Gf8k as these young gorillas: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWS2gpdnpMSlZpI Look at how the silverback gorilla's behaviour has evolved near the mirrors his family is looking at kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYPFmGacdqplibc Look at how the gorilla family's walking speed increases when they approach a mirror whose location they have memorized kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYPFmGacdqplibc Please do not forget to read the description attached to each of our 180 videos published on our channel kzbin.infovideos

*_Case of a female gorilla_* In front of a mirror, she sees a female she has never seen before, a stranger? (her reflection): A new female for her husband, the silverback (harem chief). Such are the male/female relationships in gorillas. So she doesn't know jealousy and she can quietly stay in front of her reflection and do her apprenticeship in the mirror which will allow her to recognize herself in her reflection. *_Case of gorilla babies_* In front of a mirror they are happy to discover a new playmate who takes pleasure in copying exactly every one of their own moves. They are very inquisitive exactly like in humans.

Synthetic mirrors and reflective adhesive tapes do not stay flat in bad weather. Reflections are therefore distorted images. Watch please on KZbin videos with lions/lionesses front of synthetic mirror footed in Serengeti Park: what do you think about their reflections if these feline are not close to mirror? So I use glass 3 mirrors (83x120x0,5cm) that I glue, with double-sided adhesive, to a 22 m/m marine plywood fixed on a wooden frame with 4 legs and 4 buttresses at the back. Watch my following videos and you will understand my explanations better:* kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKHIdoCKobeYh9k *I posted a video showing resistance of my mirrors to blows given by a very angry elephant. Tusks have succeeded in break the glass, but no shard of glass came off the plywood where it is securely bonded: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJWnYqKkaa1sqdU *and a video showing a mirror replacement:* kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKHIdoCKobeYh9k Two mirror breakages were made by great tuskers who, while inspecting a mirror's frame with their trunk, raised their heads and the extremity of one of their two long tusks hit the reflective surface hard. At the noise produced by the breaking of the mirror, not understanding what they had just done, they resumed their walk in the forest. Another one was broken by a silverback gorilla doing side charges to scare its reflection. Many primates hold lianas and branches in their hands, because this makes them feel stronger. Also this gorilla pulled behind him a long branch which, bouncing on the ground, went to break the mirror while the gorilla was running along the mirror: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaqXpqKupt9litU 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿𝘀 kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5vbqImdqtGSoq8 Watch more of my 180 homemade videos published on my channel kzbin.infovideos and read the description attached to each of them. *The non-self awareness in a mirror is not a lack of intelligence.* In animals as in humans, self recognition in a mirror is not innate. It is the result of the more comfortable training in the mirror at home among young humans in the company of their parents who have done this training at home and who have the words to explain to their young child the properties of the mirror. Among primates, éléphants and felids, in the insecurity of the jungle learning with his parents who have not done this and who do not speak, this is much more difficult even for intelligent individuals. An adult human, facing a mirror for the first time in his life, while unaware of its properties and even its existence, would also behave irrationally. It is only the lack of knowledge of the mirror that makes him react in this way. To date: only Humans, Orangutans, Chimpanzees, Bonobos, Gorillas (blackbacks), Rhesus Macaques, Bottlenose Dolphins, Asian Elephants, Orcas, African Grey Parrot and Magpies have shown the ability to recognize their own reflections after an even long training in the mirror for some ones. Looks like he does never get that it's him in the reflection. Not after 10 years! All he learned is that it's most likely no threat - that's it, not more. You are also wrong about humans. If a human never saw a mirror and he is normally intelligent and put in front of it for the first time when he is 20 or around that age he will instantly recognize himself in that mirror. It will take him a few minutes to see it correctly. And the gorilla? Not after 10 years - that's how stupid they really are compared to humans. Also, primitive human tribes know that their reflection in the water resemblance themself - they don't even need a mirror for that.

*1) Have you been able to recognize your own image clearly by leaning over a puddle of rain water or over a river or a lake? Maybe just your shade on a sunny day? On the surface of the water its own image cannot be reflected perpendicularly but laterally. For this reason your neighbour, under some light conditions and some quality from the bottom of the pond or the river, can see distinctly your face but not its own.* *2) I saw a scene where white explorers meeting a Papuan tribe shot a polaroid photo of a man and a woman side by side: Both of them recognized the other and didn't want to admit to being the second person in the photo because each didn't know what he looked like, having never seen himself!* *3) In the following video* kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXibaHuXnrRsj9U *, an excerpt from the report of the French director Jean-Pierre Dutilleux on a first contact with the Toulambis tribe in Papua New Guinea shows adult dads who were afraid to see themselves in a mirror, but who after a few minutes understood the reflective properties of this object. Compared to the silverback gorilla alone facing his reflection in a very large mirror, avoiding direct eye contact with it, or with a chimpanzee group all together front of a mirror, it was easier for these Papuans, endowed with speech, standing in the middle of their quiet tribe, in front of a very small mirror with a white one that shows its reflective property, to understand, their reflection through the comments of other tribe members.* Check out more of my 180 homemade videos from my channel and don't forget to read the description attached to each of them, you will find very interesting information. kzbin.infovideos Good vision!

The kinship of the gorilla and the chimpanzee with man is not in doubt today. Moreover, the "great apes" are classified in the same primate family as man: the hominids. *_We are all tailless primates! Despite some differences such as the length of the limbs or the shape of the jaws, similarities are obvious in the skeleton: large skull to house the voluminous brain, large rib cage and long arms._* But man is closer to gorillas or chimpanzees than to orangutans. A genetic resemblance has been discovered: man is said to have about 99% of his genes in common with the chimpanzee and only slightly less with the gorilla. The gorilla is therefore, after the chimpanzee, the second closest cousin to man! *_And we would have a common ancestor, who would have lived in Africa only 8 to 10 million years ago._* Please watch my video kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGGul3Ror9eef5I This adolescent gorilla's attitude is really very close to that of his human cousins (Gabon jungle) Check out more of my 180 homemade videos from my channel and don't forget to read the description attached to each of them, you will find very interesting information. kzbin.infovideos Good vision!

On another note yawning (exposing your canines) in us primates is a sign of domination.
