Gotta love working on vintage buses. This kind of stuff is always just one bolt away. The stud was spinning in the hub. At first we thought a slot in the stud would allow us to spin the inner lug nut off the stud. We abandoned that idea and pulled the hub and went at it from the back side. A couple of hours later we got the stupid thing off. It’s not always sunshine and rainbows but never give up...oh and as an added bonus the parking brake was on while they wheel was spinning. It was 100% out of adjustment. Aka inoperable. Hubs on wrong side, missing studs hidden, short studs, broken studs, non working brakes etc. this simple task of removing wheels was a real eye opening project. The dewalt impact gun worked great on the ones that were not seized

Looks like the stuff you run into in Michigan with the rust. i just had to torch out a couple of studs this week that did the same thing on a trailer hub. I used a torch to gouge out the inside, hard on the torch tip but saves the rim. In Michigan you learn to use a oxy acetylene torch like a surgeons scalpel. Love the videos, I have a 1955 4104. glad to see that someone other than me is working on these old pigs!

You are one of the busiest youtubers out here. Such an interesting and unique subject. This is a combination comment I won't do all the time. My extended family and I have all, over the decades, traveled by bus occasionally. You know, for work, unusual trips, A must do trip when the car is down, sometimes the ladies don't like driving long trips, etc. Leave the driving to us, right? At Christmas dinner, everyone of us has stories of broke down buses. "The hound broke down and left us all stranded in downtown Birmingham." It seems it is not a new thing. When I look at your video's and see how relatively easy it is to maintain a bus. You can do any sort of maintenance on a bus on the side of the road if you have the parts. It really burns me that it is not done. Sloppy maintenance, Dangerous mistakes, Work done that is backwards and flat out wrong and there is no reason for it. The machine was made to be taken apart and fixed efficiently. I don't understand why it is so often not done.

When getting hardened bolts out, I use a dremel or a rotozip (depending on how much room I have.) with a carbon steel burr to grind it out... You can by taking your time, you can even get it to the point where you don't screw up the external or internal threads... I have done snapped off sub frame bolts and stuck CV joint nuts without having to cut open the frame or replace the CV joint. Also you can weld a nut to the bolt if it snapped off... On the subframe I did that, on one I got it out on the other, it snapped the bolt off even farther... So I ground it out with a dremel.

I was completely baffled when I got my hands on my first cap nuts when I was in the US for a long vacation. I'm from Germany and here such things just dont exist. I think I will never get the point of that technique. Please don't get me wrong, I don't want to brag about German engineering; but we have normal bolts with right hand threads and conical/spherical washers on the wheels of our trucks since 1886 and it works just fine. Nice job btw! I absolutely loved the totally futile attempt to chisel that cap nut off. I was kind of whispering at my screen "pleeeease, let go you stupid nut". Hate those jobs!

You are dealing with "frozen" stud piloted inner cap nuts. There is a tire guy secret to get these off. It is a sledge hammer. I run into these regularly. After you remove the outer hex nuts grab a big Then sledge hammer. Put on your safety glasses. Hit those square inner cap nuts on the square end as hard as you can about 2 or 3 times. What that does is it jars the frozen joint loose. Then remove the inner nuts. If they are still froze-repeat the sledge hammer step to the square end. Did I say hit them hard because I meant hit them hard! This works every time. I could have had these 10 inner nuts off in 5 minutes, I swear. I wish you had called me.

Did you figure out why, when the stud was low down, it was turning with the hammer strikes and not when it was up top? The chisel was being hammered INWARDS, not downwards when it was up top. When it was down low, the angle of the chisel gave the guy with the hammer no choice but to hammer down, therefore it turned.

Try brushing/spraying zinc chromate, or zink phosphate onto the inside of those "wheel nut acorn's", it will help to minimize the galvanic reaction with the wheel nuts.
@AMStationEngineer
@AMStationEngineer 5 жыл бұрын
The zinc-based primer is to be applied to the underside of the chrome plated, or low-grade stainless acorn, and not the wheel lug components [see, it says that in the unedited post]. To the best of my knowledge, zinc chromate, or zinc phosphate has never been a component of anything sold or advertised as a wheel lug/stud protectant; again, please read the post. Ever heard of "Galvanized Steel"?? Zinc is the primary component in the hot dipping and plating process used to make galvanized steel. Maybe this'll help: www.bssa.org.uk/topics.php?article=89 and this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanic_corrosion how about this one: galvanizeit.org/design-and-fabrication/design-considerations/dissimilar-metals-in-contact let's try this: www.thebalance.com/galvanic-corrosion-2339698 Aircraft frames are coated with zinc chromate, or zinc phosphate primers prior to being "skinned". Aluminum boats are, too; at least the larger commercial versions are. Well, hmmm, each and every time that you fly on any aircraft containing aluminum, certain alloys of stainless steel, any type of "other steel alloy", areas of contact, "rivnuts", galvanic bonding materials, "static wicking materials", any potential contact points between "iron containing" alloys, copper, aluminum, and "non-minimally inert brass" alloys are required to be zinc phosphate, zinc chromate, or "zinc rich primer coated". Galvanic reaction is minimal between zinc and steel alloys, galvanic reaction is moderate between stainless and aluminum, and raw steel and aluminum, well forget it. THE PROBLEM IS WHERE THE ALUMINUM MEETS STEEL; NOT ZINC... I'll leave the insults out of the conversation....

It's downright sickening seeing the shady stuff uncovered. As someone who's been in the heavy truck transport industry for 30+ years now, I know it's not something that should surprise a person, but doing that kind of stuff and then passing it on to some unsuspecting person who might not know enough to check (before buying)... that kind of crap could lead to the unthinkable happening (worst-case scenario). This is why it pays to have a professional involved in the mechanical fitness certification process. Not to say that some "professional" didn't stoop to the lowest level to make it look really good.... I don't know how it works when an individual purchases a once-commercial vehicle, now intended for private use only, but where I'm from, this would have had to be inspected at a licensed facility with a license number put on the form, as well as the mechanic and his license number put on the form. That way, it's traceable in the event of tomfoolery. Yeah, I know, anybody could have worked on it after the form was filled out and signed, but the guys dealing with the paperwork are less inclined to put their own ass on the line and have it come back to bite them.

Next time that happens to you get out the flame wrench deflate the tire and cut the wheel off, cheaper and easier than going through this aggravation. How much is a new steel wheel? What would it cost to replace the hubs with pilot wheels and hubs. Advantage, one lug nut per lug. Just voicing what you might have been thinking 😡😡😯😦😑😩😫🤑🤑🤑😱😱😱😳😳😳 Cheers!

How did you avoid grinding the wheel? (working that close)

Where did he get the torque multiplier from, to pull the lug nuts off? I'd like to invest in one of those. Awesome job guys!

rule 1. put nuts back on either side of effected stud.. this pinches the wheel against the hub.. you have several ways to do it.. use a socket either square or hex as a drill guide.. drill right thru the middle of the stud. you may want to get a machine shop to create some drill guides for you.. to allow you to center the drill.. i do like your fix of slipping the entire hub off.. but you should have just center punched it and drilled right thru it.. since you run into the inner nut stuck quite a bit.. you might want to look into a custom ground Annular Cutter that slips over the 1 1/16 thread and has enough depth to mill away the flange without cutting into the wheel seat. i can't figure out which Annular Cutter would work as they only list them by OD of the cut.. not the ID to guide it on the inner nut threads. its just an idea.. and not a cheap one.. and the carbide inserts will probably have to be ground by a skilled tool grinder.. so you are not cutting a flat bottom hole that would damage the wheel seat.. this and several custom drill jigs that fit in the square drive of your 3/4 or 1" drive sockets.. to allow several sizes of drills to be used on center right thru the middle of the stud.

I have never seen a stud spinning loose in the hub before. I have had the inner lug nut break and i have a tool to remove that but when the whole thing spins that won’t work. We got it and i didn’t have to buy a new tool and i saved the rim and hub.

The rusted nuts were no problem. Torque multiplier made quick business of them.
