i think for me the problem with it ends with us is it humanizes an abuser by saying he’s a good dad and just like… no. absolutely not. like even colleen’s note about how her dad wasn’t a good husband but was a good dad, girl you are in DENIAL!!! the fact that you knew he was a bad husband and saw that toxic dynamic literally proves he wasn’t a good father?? also the fucking coloring book thing, so genuinely how did that idea even get green light, what was anyone in that room thinking?! 🤨

It Ends With Us felt like a Lifetime for Women Orignal Movie instead of a book about a survivor. I've unfortunately been a family member of a survivor who went back and will never leave her abuser. Lily's family's response was so "Ruhroh! That's terrible! But your leaving right? Okeydokey!" They downplayed and continued in the 2nd book to downplay it. In addition, the writing was like the chapters from New Moon where Bella is hallucinating Edward. Like...They're making drama out of jack shit and not really diving into the actual issues the book could have really gone into depth.

I had no expectations and no history with publishing industry, and i still really enjoyed it. It's just REALLY fun to read, in a way its fun to follow a twitter drama but with backstage info why some awful people choose to die on their really weird hill. I knew every thing mentioned in the book probably happened to other authors and the take was mostly nuanced enough to open the conversation of where are the boundaries for whats ok and not. It genuinely made me want to read more often, and i think that counts for something!

I really enjoyed the poppy war trilogy because of it's commentary and how it deals with class and race amongst other things imo maybe modern day writing might not be for Kuang as Babel and The Poppy War have been highly praised in comparison to yellowface which has been criticised a lot

I already knew what author it was as soon as you said 1/8 Asian lol (Lisa See). When I picked up that book I was gagged to see a yt womans face! She holds onto that percentage haha

I read Ryle’s excuses for his abuse -that he would black out or didn’t mean it or whatever - to be just excuses from that character, not justifications from the author, if that makes sense.

when i first finished yellowface, i thought, "this book is okay, but it's definitely not for an asian person like me" cause i already know everything that was said. as for the class difference between the two authors, i was also disappointed cause it loses the nuance of how wealth differences could also affect someone's opportunities in the industry (also the fact that this is the second time rf kuang dismisses the effects of class difference in her books 🫥)

@hareema4442 SPOILERS FOR BABEL in babel, there's a group of friends who are of different races, one of them being white (her name is letty). letty is a person who grew up in poverty and was considered as the villain because she chose to side with the oppressive institution to keep her place in there. she was written as an incredibly annoying character who absolutely does not understand racism and microaggressions (which could be true, but it loses the nuance of how people who grew up in poverty might stay silent/be submissive(?) to big institutions to keep the chances that were given to them).

ALSO, with it ends with us I think for me the main issue for me at least is that a lot of people tend to focus on the romance or love traingle when it was supposed to be about DV and how booktok promotes it as romance when its more of Lily leaving an abusive relationship and esp since it's suppposedly based off of Colleen's parents marriage so it feels icky to see how Colleen treated the book (with the colouring book fiasco) so i just have some weird thoughts on it. Overall, either colleen shouldve focused on the romance OR on the abusive relationship, by trying to do both she kinda fell flat on both of them? idk its been a while since i read it so take this with a grain of salt
@withcindy

I think she should've focused on the romance w the better character and not abuse cuz u know she isn't capable of writing sensitive topics thoughtfully lol
