I think bringing up it's predecessor as point of criticism is kinda reductive if the argument it's "it's not just as good", well of course it's not, but that is not the point being made, at least not to me. The way I see it, it's that bryke and their team struggled to make basic storytelling choices when it came to LoK, to the point that even came across as completely amateurish sometimes. I commend their choice of making something different, and I would argue the best things about LoK are when they take risks, but oh boy they fumbled the execution of those plotllines so hard. The love triangle of the first season is atrocious and the ending completely undermines the impact of Korra losing her bending. Aang IMMEDIATALY shows up and resolves conflict, that way Korra doesn't learn anything ,and they just reset her character arc season 2.It's just in season 3(which by the way is the best season by a longshot) they finally did something her character. Until season 3, LoK didn't feel like a overarching narrative with a cohesive narrative, and everything else suffered because of it. And you can tell they REALLY tried so hard to connect the dots in book 3, by revealing that unalaq was part of the red lotus. I also agree that season 4 was super underwhelming, and they really tried to make Mako and Bolin interesting, but honestly by that point was already to late. The best thing about season 4 was the aftermath of Zaheer's actions, which lead to the rise of Kuvira, and Korra having to face her demons.This what the show has been mising, actual consequences for the world and characters. The scene between her and Zaheer in book 4 is one the best scenes in the show, it's brillant. So yeah with all that said I think Korra is a good show, and when people point out things that are great about like the villans, the themes, the complexity of the world. This show is full of genius ideas that more often than not end up working against the story they are telling. Overall I still like this show, but I have no desire to keep rewatching it. Season 1 is probably my favorite as a standalone story, and season 3 is the best one as a overarching story. And even if somebody wants to argue that bryke didn'T know if they were going to get a next season, and they did the best they could with the hand they were given(god knows dealing with nick it's a nightmare) guess what, ATLA wasn't greenlit for 3 books either. Hell they didn't even know if book 1 was gonna be the last one, but they had a vision, and took a gamble and it payed off.

I know the reason why Korra's development seemed so slow in Season 2. Season 2 was written as it's last season until they were abruptly told after finishing the product that TLOK would be put on for 2 other seasons and notice how those last 2 seasons were the best because Korra actually got to develop. All I'd want is Unalaq to have more depth and not ruin the spirits because learning Spiritbending served NOTHING for Korra except for getting stronger, she could've learned how to be compassionate earlier on in Season 2 but I'm glad they picked it back up and lessons FROM season 2 were mentioned again. All the side characters are great but the Krew just remained so static with subtle changes and when relationships did change it was mostly just because Korra became a better person. And about ATLA not being greenlit for 3 books. The 3 main writers had already established what they wanted to do with the show before it was even aired and plus Nickolodeons distrubution was steady. Unlike Korra where literally one of the Korean animators said "Sexism hindered the production of Korra." and firing random staff members. ATLA definetly got more care than LOK ever did and Nickolodeon HATES both series.

Good points. And I did say in the video that I didn't think he was a bad character. I just think the writers could have made him a little more competent in battle. I didn’t finish the first season because I just got bored with the potential love triangle they were setting up, I hate love triangles. That being said, even I thought that Korra received too much hate. People literally were upset that she didn’t act like Aang. This made zero sense to me because Korra is a separate person. Aang was whole MONK, Ofcourse he is going to be chill when he was raised to be enlightened. Plus even Aang has his immature moments. Korra was a teenager that grew up isolated from the real world, raised by a bunch of old masters. She wasn’t growing up around other people her age, so it doesn’t surprise me how immature she was in the first season. She’s put on a pedestal by these older people in a way that Aang wasn’t. Her coming to republic city and realizing that everyone doesn’t really need her, was life changing. Plus she was thrown into a world where bending has evolved with technology, leading to more powerful villains.

Found you through your Boondocks videos and just got this in my recommended, perfect timing as I recently finished TLOK. I had always heard some split opinions in passing but I never knew the extent of how despised the series was by a lot of people. Your thoughts are relatively similar to mine. Book 2 is ass. I don’t really understand why people seem to hate Korra as a character so much. I like the way she was introduced as being brash and fiercely confident, and then to see her pride and sense of self slowly broken down over the course of the series. Her growth came from the way that she was humbled by her experiences, and it made her more grounded as a person. A reasonably accurate portrayal of trauma and depression as well. Team Korra is something I wish got more development, not even comparing them to the Gaang. I think this stems from the issue that where ATLA feels like more of a character focused series, TLOK feels more like a narrative/idea focused series, and it feels like I didn’t get to know the Krew as well as I did the Gaang. Mako and Asami especially needed more time to be fleshed out imo, I feel like I got to know more about Bolin than the former two, as we watched him go from someone who was somewhat meek and dorky to someone who was able to hold his own and became more independent, while still being a bit of a goofball. I love Lin and Tenzin however, easily my two favorite characters in TLOK (makes sense as Toph was my favorite character in ATLA). Lin’s history with her family and seeing their shaky dynamics were very interesting, and how their family influenced the world on a massive scale, not to mention the classic Beifong sass and bitterness being inherited. As for Tenzin, I do like the way he comes to accept that he’s supposed to be Tenzin and not be another Aang (that scene in the bog was the best part of book 2 other than Avatar Wan imo), and I generally like that archetype of a stressed out/bitter adult figure Lol One of the areas where I think Korra actually surpassed ATLA is with the villains, save for Unalaq. Amon/Noatak, Zaheer, and Kuvira were all more interesting and complex to me than Ozai, as their motivations and philosophies feel more fleshed out, and seeing how their backgrounds influenced them. I love Ozai, but idk, I like a little more nuance sometimes. Azula stands head-to-head with the three mentioned in terms of writing however. In spite of any criticisms I do have with TLOK, I agree that it’s very overhated and gets too much shit, it could’ve been so much worse, even if it wasn’t as good as it could have been. I still enjoyed my time with it a lot, even if Book 2 exists, as Books 3 and 4 made it very worth my while. I’ll definitely read the graphic novels at some point, I hear they give more depth to Korrasami, which would make me really happy. Much love. Your content doesn’t get as much attention as it deserves, you’re quickly becoming a new favorite of mine.

Unfortunately it's pretty much impossible to compete with ATLA and LoK basically had to compete with it. LoK initially only got 1 season then a second and finally a 3rd and 4th. There's almost no way to do long term story telling when the work is only approved for 1 season at a time. An idea I had was a cross-over with: original Star Wars, BTAS, & Avatar as all 3 are great plus all heavily involved Mark Hamill. I do feel that the seasonal villains of LoK did hurt plus with a lot of characters there really wasn't much time to expand on them. While ATLA had this to a degree but Azula & Zuko were in a way the primary villains/antagonist

I think you kinda hit the nail on the head with why people don't like the show. The characters are uninteresting. In Atla you could have a whole episode only featuring side characters (Zuko Alone, The Beach) and it could be some of the best content in the whole show. That couldn't happen with Korra because they just didn't have interesting characters to work with.

Just want to clarify that Zaheer is really a non-anarchists idea of what an anarchist is, and doesn't really represent anything of what anarchists believe aside from there being no state governments or hierarchies. The whole "natural order is chaos" is just like 13 year old edge lord shit. That's actually a major flaw of LOK, it really has no understanding of the ideologies it pulls from to craft its villains, but has no problem in defiantly stating those worldviews are wrong. But Zaheer is still fucking dope regardless. And him being Henry Rollins is just fucking awesome. That alone feels like an intentional nod to "this is what a 13 year old who just bought their first black flag album thinks" and less of a "Zaheer is Emma Goldman" kind of thing. Anarchy literally just translates to "without rulers" or "without kings". The whole "chaos" thing is a red scare hold over from the time period of propaganda of the deed, which is what Zaheer is mostly pulling from, and even when that was en vogue, anarchists didn't agree that that was what anarchists should be doing, and pretty much all of us agree now that its not the ideal method. Anarchists are closer to Huey (obviously he's not an anarchist, but he probably would be friends with them) than they are to Zaheer. In fact the ideology that Huey's character is pulling from has its own offshoot version of Anarchism.
@chillreview6364 ай бұрын
Interesting. I obviously don't know much about the anarchist ideology outside of the basics that were talked about in LOK, but I'd be down to research it further. And despite his philosophy being 13 year edge lordish, I still think it worked as a good enough motivation for him to do the things he did to Korra, and I don't think Zahir's character was meant to be a condemnation of anarchy as a whole, just the radicalization of it. And funny enough, I've actually met Henry Rollins before, but that's a story for another time lol
@andygproductions4 ай бұрын
@@chillreview636 oh I agree I think Zaheer is a great villain and his motivation makes total sense, and his flavor of anarchism thematically fits for that turn of the century era that LOK is going for, albeit super simplified. The things he does are totally in line with some anarchist movements of the era that Korra is playing with, propaganda of the deed was a thing some people advocated and his going after the earth queen is 100% propaganda of the deed, but in real life the goal wasn’t to cause mass chaos but to inspire mass revolution. It didn’t work and more or less replaced by syndicalism style anarchism. But the movement isn’t monolithic and lots of things were tried at lots of places in lots of points in history. Zaheer is the kind of character that should make people interested in learning about anarchism, either historically or currently, but not exactly the character you should treat as informative. The KZbin channel Kay and skittles has a pretty good video dissecting the ideologies that LOK plays with in each of the seasons and talks about what’s accurate and what isn’t

The side characters sucked. Lin and Tenzin are my all time favs. Also, Bolin learning to lavabend was corny. He wasn’t an amazing bender or “one” with his bending. It felt so off and meant nothing to me. The whole team Avatar isn’t “one” with their bending. Everyone treats their bending like a pistol. Nothing more. Nothing less. Pew Pew Pew. Just awful. No wonder we feel underwhelmed with Korra’s team. Aang’s team was connected in every aspect of their element. So it made sense that they’d discover sub-elements. But Bolin, I’m just not buying it. If you see the characters as a side-story/future-arc wherein the point of the characters is to be a foil of which to reveal more about the universe's lore, then their inconsistencies are not as jarring. These are characters plopped into their circumstance, they arent deeply spiritual nomads or self-doubting waterbenders with traumatic pasts, or an anti-hero who struggles with accepting the terms of their duty. Nothing philosophical really drives these characters. And that's the key point, these chracters are not "driven" in the same sense that the characters in ATLA were. They are very much modern people in the modern avatar world, and that world has changed drastically since the age of myth (Aang's time). Kind of like when we read stories of Al Capone or the Italian Mafia, such driven prolific figures.. then you have the CEO of google (way more wealthy but 0 earth-shattering accomplishments or convictions). ATLA is the heroes journey from a time of legends, ATLA:K is what would happen if you dropped a group of Millennials & Gen-Z's in the world of avatar.

@@Ace1stClass77 hmmm very interesting perspective. Not sure I agree with all of your opinions about the characters, but it's definitely a refreshing take on the story overall.

Sorry but I'll be skipping this review. Korra is just not it on a lot of fronts. Show felt like they needed to keep going anime power levels since season one started at a high level with the tec Especially how og cast members get treated like how aang couldn't figure out how a blood bender worked when his wife was one and ask if they felt similar to homons dad. Sokkas entire life too.

No worries. Everything ain't for everybody. I appreciate you still commenting on the video. I know a lot of people didn't really enjoy the show, but I think it has a lot of redeeming qualities and some of the best moments of either series. And regarding your blood bending point, Katara only ever learned the basics of it, Amon and his father took the power to level no one had ever seen before, so it makes sense to me that Aang wouldn't recognize it immediately

the only thing i really didn't like about the series was eliminating all the former avatar's spirits, suggesting a final end to avatars in the future... i wonder if they noticed the incompatibility of high-tech especially electronics and bending, especially electricity bending. the power to wreak havoc with energy grid, internet, radio etc with just small amounts of current at the right place and no real protection... anyways, if it was meant as final FINAL, to the avatar universe, there is still room for prequel series - if well made :)

A Kyoshi series or another Avatar before Roku could definitely be interesting to see.
