This movie was one of those remakes that were made in the right era. It had a lot of the right people involved, and you were right, it wasn't afraid to show off it's strengths, which a lot of movies are afraid to do now.

The first musical book I bought. I have (kid you not) the 666th copy. It must be haunted or something. But I love it, because it’s so specific. It even has the ground plan of the original set, puppet operation directions, the cast list, etc. I LOVE IT!

Frank Oz's masterpiece adaptation of a stage musical adaptation of a 1960's horror/comedy. I love it so much 🥰. The cast is fantastic, even down to the cameos, and every song is a bop. Ba doop! Favorite has to be Skid Row. I love the way the city breaks into song and Rick Moranis belts the heck out of his verse. And you are right that it sets the tone perfectly. Dark subject in an upbeat way. Dentist has to be a close second because Steve Martin never fails to delight. His energy really sells it. Again, crazy dark subject, upbeat song 😅

Musical theatre expert here: the reason why some movie musicals work in terms of being screen adaptations of stage shows and some don't (among other variables that literally no one can account for like release dates, cast suitability, changing audience tastes, etc) mainly comes down to two things. The first is remaining faithful to the source material; though this isn't entirely necessary since some movie musicals are very different from their stage-shows - e.g. Chicago and Cabaret - and still work, while some movie musicals are faithful to a fault but it ultimately works against them - e.g. Phantom of the Opera with its literal candles literally rising from the lake and completely needless framing device. The other and arguably more important factor is largely down to how seriously they take themselves and the material. For example, Cats failed as a movie because among *plenty* of other things, director Tom Hooper (who, by the way, is someone who should never under any circumstances be allowed to direct another movie musical purely because of the sheer hell he's now put two sets of performers and orchestras through) opted to go as realistic as possible with the design of the cats which actively works against the material. Cats isn't a show for hyper-realism - the costumes in the original stage-show were in fact specifically designed to keep the audience aware that these are humans playing cats (since the basic premise of the collection of poems the show is based on is essentially "cats are just like people"), and equally, that allows an audience viewing the stage-show to maintain a certain amount of suspension of disbelief right from the start. By going the nightmare-fuel CGI motion capture fur route that tried to get the "bipedal cat" look as close to realistic as possible, Hooper basically ensured that audiences struggled to accept the basic concept of Cats at all because it seemed like we were being encouraged to take it entirely seriously; the stage-show basically throws up its hands (er...paws) as soon as the first cat appears onstage and says "yup, it's silly but look how awesome the dancing is!". Musicals are, by definition, unrealistic pieces of entertainment. We all know real life takes place in a sad sad world where people don't just start singing their feels or instigate random yet perfectly choreographed crowd dances; the more a movie musical tries to convince us that it's a realistic drama taking place in the real world (e.g. 2012 Les Miserables), the less inclined an audience is to get onboard with the mere concept of it being a musical because the hyper-realistic tone ends up completely jarring with the inherently fantastical element of people expressing their feelings through song and occasionally dance. Where LSOH and other movie musicals succeed is that they just accept that musicals aren't realistic in the first place and thus never really try for 100% realism - even in the first song in this film, you've got the girl chorus in odd costumes, singing directly to the audience, walking through walls completely unseen by the other characters and not getting wet from the rain. And it only leans harder into the "not realistic" tone from there (even through things like blocking and editing and camerawork), especially during the musical numbers. It automatically relaxes the audience and gives a feeling of "okay, so this is a non-realistic world where people sing and dance...I can (hopefully) go along with that".

Thank you for the input! I immediately think of Rocky Horror Picture Show which runs on the power of Tim Curry and the way it feels like he's looking at the audience going, "yeah this is silly...what are you going to do about it."

I genuinely love the original ending. There are definitely things it could've done different, like cutting time off of things like, Seymour bringing in Audrey for Audrey 2, Seymour being eaten, and how long the attack scene went on in general. The theatrical ending is good too, but I prefer the original.

@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Not only that, but it cost them some money and sets. There are people who prefer the happier ending, mostly because it fits the tone of the rest of the film, but the alternate ending is far more faithful to the stage musical and solidifies its message while still being ridiculous enough to work. Plus, with what changes they had to make, the "Mean Green Mother From Outer Space" number feels chopped together poorly.

I really like the dark ending. It really commits to the theme of the protagonists being fatally flawed, Seymour is too willing to compromise and claim victimhood to take any responsibility for his actions, Audrey is constantly taking responsibility for the bad actions done to her- and making horrible compromises to her own wants. There is no way it can end well. The happy ending does away with the moral of the story. Also- mad props to the writers of the musical for codifying the moral. The same basic events happen in the original film- but without any rhyme or reason to hold it together. It's a really tight adaptation that not only replicates, but elevates.

I loved the "happy" ending, but I also first saw the movie as a kid, so that's what I needed. I still think the "director's cut" ending isn't as successful, because it's not paced particularly well, and I don't think they nailed the tone they wanted to. They were going for funny, but it's kind of depressing because of how it's shot and acted and scored. Like Audrey's death is meant to be so melodramatic that it was funny, I think, but didn't quite get there because what's funny on film is different from what's funny on stage.

YES! I love this musical adaptation so much. This and Chicago are great examples of how a musical can be translated from Broadway to the screen. A musical is all about heightened reality and expressing emotions in a big bombastic manner. So, whenever they make a movie and just suck all the so called glamour out, looking at you Dear Evan Hansen, it just leaves you wondering what's the point of the music

So glad you watched it with the original ending, though I wouldve loved to see your take on the family friendly theatrical ending. That whole situation was wild when it happened, this was the ending they had in the stage show but when they did previews for the movie the test audience said it was too dark of an ending so thats why they filmed the good ending. With the remake coming out I'm hoping they do the dark ending since modern audiences definitely are much more used to darker endings.

Was the extra bass in the Little Shop of Horrors music scores intentional? or was it an accident? I've got some fairly powerful PC speakers and they thump when the music plays lol I heard a little about the original 1960 version of Little Shop of Horrors was a forgotten movie, nobody seems to care about it anymore. That's a shame. I mean it had Jack Nicholson in it. He's younger than he was in the 1963 movie The Raven. The version you're reviewing was pretty wild though. From the amazing timing and editing they had to do to get the Audria II plant to sync with the music to the wacky cast of them movie. I was elated to finally see the director's cut with the alternate ending that many deemed too dark.

KARMA-KARMA-KARMA! LITTLE SHOP! LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS! I can't help but feel that due to Rick Moranis' and John Candy's pairing in SCTV (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hH7NpamJdqeEabM) it helped elevate their profiles enough to get picked for Ghostbusters, (Louis Tully was originally written for Candy, but then Candy dropped out, so Moranis stepped in; Ramis was also a co-star in SCTV) and this. ~12:23 - fun fact: Steve Martin and the bloopers of this rather dramatic opening of the doors here actually broke the panes of glass within them, and subsequently badly cut his hands as a result. (You can see a distinctive *flick* after he realises what he's done - as the shards of glass fall from the broken panes, and cut his hands. He still remains in character tho!) Also - the scenes where Audrey II is, well, bigger than small - lol - if you watch the BTS/video assist: everything sounds sped up. Well, the puppetry for Audrey II was shot at less-than 24fps (I guess to make the movements easier on the puppeteers?) and so when played back at regular speed, it gets a speed boost as a result. The trivia nugget here is that Moranis had to mime his lines/actions slower, so that when played at speed, things would be in sync. Else, he'd deliver them as a chipmunk on speed otherwise. :3

not reading through all the comments so i have no idea what folks have and havent already brought up but i have a lot of fun facts/additions of my own to add to your commentary, both in terms of comparisons with the musical and behind the scenes stuff for the movie itself! 1) you shouted out Howard Ashman for the writing, which is great because he deserves all the credit in the world, but dont forget he was accompanied by Alan Menken! who also worked on most of those disney movies with Ashman you mentioned (hence the similarities between tunes like Somewhere That's Green and Part of Your World), along with a couple more after his passing. in terms of the original little shop musical, the booking/lyrics were done by Ashman while the music itself was Menken. So he's to thank for most of those catchy songs lol 2) for the opening scene, the Urchins (greek chorus ladies) actually had a fabric cover thing over them in an effort to keep them from getting wet during the rain, so they'd have sort of a "separated" feeling from the rest of the activity going on. like they're immune to the events of the story. 3) a big part of the reason why Little Shop works so well as a film adaptation is that it *was* already a film in its very first iteration, since it was based off the 1960 Roger Corman movie of the same name, so a decent amount of the story pacing and such is already in line with what people expect from a theatrical verison. the other reason is that Ashman and Menken both directly had a hand in making it, so they were there to ensure that it didn't stray too far from its original vision lol 4) technically Mushnik isn't making him stay overnight when Audrey II starts getting sick, just telling him they're not going out at all-- Seymour already lives at the shop. 5) in another version of the scene w/ Orin during Feed Me he actually broke the glass on the door and hurt his hand when he tried to catch it after slamming it open 6) they cut a song during Orin's death, "Now (It's Just the Gas)," where its made clear that while Seymour actually kind of sucks at killing people he doesnt suck for lack of wanting to do so, just an inability to. he manages to justify his way into letting Orin die by basically saying "well, I couldn't shoot him, but now I can kill him by doing absolutely nothing." which i think gives more depth to Seymour's character personally. 7) the fact that Mushnik outright saw the crime was also changed for the movie! they cut all of Mushnik's songs for an unclear reason, which means they never established the whole adoption/surrogate father plotline in this version, so they specifically needed to make him blackmail Seymour so it wasn't *totally* baseless when he dies later on. 8) Ellen Greene can in fact sing *really really well,* she was the first Audrey in the initial off-broadway run of the show in '82 9) THE PLANT IS IN FACT PUPPETRY (with some animatronics to supplement) AND IT IS *THE COOLEST THING* i can't quite remember the exact number but i believe Twoey's final stage required somewhere in the realm of 30 puppeteers to operate-- mostly controlling the vines, but with at least two if not three/four working the pod. the scenes with Twoey were also filmed with the audio at half-speed (then artificially pitched up to make them intelligible enough for the actors to work with) so they could be sped up in post and make the movements look more natural, but that also meant that in the scenes where she shared the shot with any of the human actors, said human actors had to act at half-speed (and were dubbed after the fact) so they still looked normal when the scenes were sped up. 10) yet another change from the musical-- you question why audrey went over to the shop after seeing the plant acting like a freak, and in the original she didn't. the whole phone call was added for the movie (i presume since they had the ability to have multiple sets they decided to take advantage of it), and in the original she was already going over to the shop to check on Seymour. the plant noticed her on her way and started talking to get her to come in. 11) im so glad you watched the version with the restored ending, IMO its just better for the whole message of the story. though Mean Green Mother is one hell of a villain song (and, fun fact, based on a demo Ashman and Menken originally wrote for the musical) all in all though i loved seeing your reactions to things! (audrey DID deserve better youre right). it was especially fun watching this as someone who IS one of those dedicated fans, since its really interesting to see what things are common knowledge and what i've completely taken for granted as something that seems so obvious to me but is actually a result of years of fixation lol

This was the version that fialed with test screen audiences that the play tends to do. Since it doesn't work so well for the movie where the cinematography makes you feel a little more intimate and connected yo these characters, they redid the ending to not be a complete bummer. Again..I'm sure you are aware but just in case, watch the release as it first came out if you haven't. It really was one of the few times when the feedback changed by the test audience paid off properly. There is still a little dark cliff hanger eluding at something earlier in the movie occuring and an ultimate bad ending but it's never confirmed. Ok..was going to leave it a surprise but the guy who plans to spread the plants interupts a reprise of suddenly Seymore which is just hilarious. Also he is played by another actor (I THINK Jim Balishi) and yes, he apparently succeeds despite Semore running him off as a baby Audrey 2 is in Audry and Semore's garden at the end.

A lot of people who recommend this to people who have never seen this push for the sad ending rather then telling people that there are two endings and letting them choose or having them see both endings . Its like how some one watches Star Wars and half the people say "Release date" and half the people say "Chaological order" the difference being Star Wars fans want to preserve the original theatrical experience while Little Shop fans want to share an experience that the public didn't normally get . Same with Superman where the director cut is preferred for blind reactions. Then on Goonies people prefer blind reactors to see the original not the directors cut. also same voice actor for the plant was also in Captain N, I can never unhear it. this movie also had a very weird cartoon series and has been references almost every time a fly trap is in a thing Also your Alice in Wonderland and Pinocchio videos are locked and again my basic comment there is that I would love to see you go threw every version of the movies that have been remade multiple times Im getting done with the movies you made videos of that I have nostalgia for, The one I clicked on you for was Muppets Star Wars but I followed it from a reaction on Little Shop so we came full circle. growing up my parents never approved of me having a copy of this movie in my collection also that Little Mermaid song, Part of Your world, kind of sounds like me trying to share things I love with other people. Starting to wonder when to let people watch what they want to watch and when to keep saying "But this movie is so cool try it you'll like it" I feel like Green Eggs and Ham some times like "Try it you'll like it" but some times I worry Im being too pushy maybe if people are not interested I should just let them be and stop asking. Just when one loves a thing one wants to share it but some times people get sick of being asked again to try a thing they have no time for. But some times one regrets not seeing things sooner and some times one is better off not seeing things they have no interest in. also thinking about this movie as a play makes me think of how popular Romio and Juliet is as a school play and about how moral is it to make kids kiss each other in a story about taking your own life vs how important is it to not ban and censor literature also when I was a kid we always said "Keep digging Watson"

I'm late to the party on this & it was definitely a interesting film. As you may also know, our list of tv & movies has a wide selection via Wiki lists that i personally haven't explored them all, just only a few list (includes New Zealand via it's tv & movies) which is one of the most overlooked stuff imo because some or most Aussies go into foreign related media most of the time (because AUS media gets deleted/blocked/private quite a bit on YT so a VPN is almost essential for any blocked content not in your country or piracy). Like a friend of mine from Canada who uses a VPN to go into Netflix AUS (btw have you been to Netflix AUS, Avery)? Fingers crossed for 90s Blinky Bill era via my playlist, Skippy 1960s tv show via the Luna Park EP, the 1969 movie or anything from AUS or NZ tv or movie related for commentary. Heck even Saddle Club or Round the Twist again, while i also found & lost many obscure stuff overtime. Also saved & created more AUS & NZ playlists compilations.

I use to know the soundtrack to this movie and it's I think 2003 Broadway soundtrack from start to finish. I Even performed the song Supper Time before. It was a lot of fun. Hard but fun I can not match to the amazing voice of the late great Levi Stubbs who by the way was the lead singer of the group The Four Tops I highly recommend checking out the songs Shake Me, Wake me. It's the same old song and going loco down in acapulco cause omg can these people sing. Also yes the puppet was made by The Jim Henson Company. And I would love to see you make a review of the original 1960's Little Shop Of Horrors that the musical and this movie was based off of. It is just a seriously good watch, And it is defiantly the meaning of Dark Comedy even for the 60s. But highly worth the watch. Like I can see it being a Original Twilight Zone episode if they were allowed to go that dark at the time. But as always Another great review Avery can't wait for the next one.

6 months later but I just had to say I got to play Seymour my senior year of highschool and those 6 months of rehearsal were probably the happiest time of my life. Also, as someone who has acted in the play, I vastley prefer the apocalypse ending since that is the original outcome of the show. In my opinion the happy ending is incredibly tone-deaf to the moral of the show since Seymour is unpunished after willingly feeding people to a carnivorous plant.

Even though some of the characters don't have a lot of screen time or depth you still care about their situation because people can relate to them. I have seen both endings and I prefer the one where Audrey II wins. This is definitely when a remake is better than the original movie. I don't know if the movie industry can do it again. Although Audrey 2 breaking through the movie screen at the very end is pretty damn brilliant.
