Even as a kid, I knew that there was something sketchy about Grandpa Joe. He stays in bed for years on end, letting Mrs Bucket wait on him hand and foot, yet isn't bedridden enough to start into a song and dance routine about how he has a golden ticket?! 🙄

Veruca's audition for the movie consisted of her saying, ""I want it now!" Roald Dahl wrote Matilda about the experiences he had in British private schools, not good. Willy Wonka was about his childhood love of chocolate.

@@AveryTalksAboutStuff The 1971 Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory is one of the best kids movies of all time, Gene Wilder is wonderful, it's charming, has memorable songs, great effects and set design considering it's low budget and age and terrific performances from the child actors. Everyone knows that movie. The Tim Burton remake is just a bad movie. I like some of Tim Burton's movies and i think Depp is a great actor but this is a major misfire. Depp's Willy Wonka acts like he has mental problems, the songs are loud and obnoxious so you can't even make out what the lyrics are supposed to be and it all has that signature Tim Burton visual style which i do enjoy but it's so overdone now it's become a cliche. Also the dry, sarcastic humor from the 1971 version has been replaced with annoying "random" and wacky nonsense and awkward silences like it's an episode of The Office or something. Avoid this dumpster fire and get your kids to watch the 1971 version, they'll love it.

It's kind of funny how, as a kid, I thought Wonka was a father type figure to the Oompa Loompa's. Now, as an adult, it's kind of messed up how he tests his candy in them like they are lab rats and he probably doesn't pay them since they don't leave the factory. Also, Wonka's factory must have all the health code violations and the contest must have been rigged if Slugworth was able to talk to each kid the moment it was broadcast that someone found one

It's weird thinking Roald Dahl had such an issue with TV because he went on to do two TV anthology series, one being based on his short stories known as Tales of The Unexpected, and a somewhat forgotten series known as "Way Out". Both series were good and I recommend them.

6:35 for some reason I always felt bad for the woman worker - like, sure she gets a raise, but it's not much of a raise and she's still working in a shitty factory with a shitty boss, and in her excitement she doesn't even get praised or thanked she's just... left on the stairs. And her smile fades. I dunno, I want to give her a hug. XD EDIT: Also, I feel kinda weird that Augustus is put on the same level as the other kids - what was crime, eating candy? Eating a little too much? It's literally the point of the room, and being overweight isn't like... a moral question? If you're big you're not a bad person - what is this moral? XD
@AveryTalksAboutStuff
@AveryTalksAboutStuff Жыл бұрын
Agreed, I want to give her a hug. And yeah, I guess it's supposed to be a commentary on...gluttony? But it doesn't really make that much sense because if a kid eats too much candy to be healthy it's honestly the parent's fault (all of these kid's parents should get blamed not the children. Plus as someone who has struggled at points with disordered eating I don't love the idea of connecting food intake to morality directly.

I love both films but I do prefer the Tim Burton version for being more true to the book, and everything from the visuals and music is very whimsical. I remember when the Tim Burton version came out I was so obsessed with it. It was one of the few films I watched in the cinema multiple times. And actually it was because of that version that I read the book and became a fan of Roald Dahl. Very rarely do I come across people who like the Tim Burton and I do appreciate when it gets shown some love. In response to one of your comments on the Tim Burton version (comments are turned off on that video). In both films, they don’t really make it clear where the films take place. And that was actually intentional. With the Gene Wilder version, they filmed it in Germany so it wouldn’t look obviously American or British. With the Tim Burton version it was meant to look sort of like a mix of Britain and America which would explain why there’s a mix of English and American people in the main setting. Usually I would be really bothered when I hear non-American people using really American words but in that version, it actually doesn’t bother me for some reason.

Veruca Salt is also an awful person (don't care that she's like 10, she still sucks lol). Charlie's mom always gets crap from people for keeping him realistic..that's great parenting! Yes the remake is a real horror film for all the wrong reasons.. I actually spent money to watch that shit show. I forkin love this movie though, glad you did a video on it.

Haha, I don't think either of us are old...I just feel old when I try to understand teens. 😂 To be fair, Grandpa Joe is only terrible in this version because of odd choices to deviate from the book whereas the remake is way more successful at writing him and overall does a better job at depicting the family's situation as a whole. But that's all for the next video I guess. 😅 And I will come for anyone who comes for the mom because that woman is a superhero.

1. I first saw it when I was 10. 2. Roald Dahl the book author was a well known LSD user. (you can see why) He didn't like this adaptation, so we were cursed with "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". 3. The Umpa Lumpas told the reverent portion of the story. Anything beyond that would have been unnecessary and overkill 4. I suspect Wonka knew which children would win the tickets (lessons for our behalf) because Slugworth/Mr. Wilkinson was at the scene almost immediately. 5. Many people (especially women) seem to get a creepy feeling from Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka. 6. This is the only roll Peter Ostrum/Charlie. He's now an Veterinarian. 7. After reading the script, Gene Wilder said he would take the role of Willy Wonka under one condition: that he would be allowed to limp, then suddenly somersault in the scene when he first meets the children. When director Mel Stuart asked why, Wilder replied that having Wonka do this meant that "from that time on, no one will know if things are real or not." Stuart asked, "If I say no, you won't do the picture?" and Wilder said, "I'm afraid that's the truth." 8. If you look carefully, you can see the little girl in the candy shop get wacked on the chin when the candy man opens the flip up counter. 9. Fun fact: Veruca/Julie Dawn Cole didn't have any adult with her when they went to Germany to film the movie so Gene Wilder himself stepped in to make sure she was taken care of.😎 10. You can get away with anything in a musical. PS: My son hated "Cheer up Charlie". I would tease him by singing with a lady's voice.

the remake isn't actually that bad, its just a bit odd they put the daddy issues into it. The darker feel actually fits Dahls writing better than this one. But out of the two I definitely prefer willy wonka over charlie as a film. Just a feel good colourful campy goodness, heaped with nostalgia certainly but still very much an entertaining watch for the entire family. The remake is a bit too intense for a full family film.

My mom took me to see the remake when it was out in the theaters in 2005. I was 4 going on 5 at the time. I clearly remember watching it at the movie theaters, Johnny's appearance and the whole aesthetic of the factory creeped me out and I was so worried about the naughty kids especially Augustus and Violet. I had so many nightmares of Johnny Depp Willy Wonka 😂 If you ever want to traumatize kids make them watch a movie directed by Tim Burton.

Also why do we hate Johnny Depp and Tim Burton? Also I would say the remake actually has gotten more love in the past 10 years or so. Much like original that it wasnt well received at first until years later

I don't hate Johnny Depp at all. Gene wilder said he liked him as an actor. At the time of this video we were all learning collectively how his ex had abused him and then called him an abuser and I was referencing my support for him as a survivor of abuse. Tim Burton has said some pretty racist things and so with Wilder saying he didn't like him I was referring to that when I said I also didn't.

I much prefer this Willy Wonka to Tim Burton's, but I can see why Grandpa Joe is a bit of a jerk here, I used to find him hilarious as a kid, but now that you point out these noticeable douchebag flaws of his, I can totally see your point lol. I still adore 'I've got a golden ticket' though! "Jumping crocodiles, Charlie" Did you know that Roald Dahl actually hated this movie? He was quite sceptical of most film adaptations of his books. The only one he thorougly enjoyed was a cartoon adaption of the BFG, made by a British animation company in 1989. Dahl sadly passed in 1990, so he obviously missed out on the 2005 adaption and of course, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach. etc.

Yeah like it's totally understandable that grandpa Joe can't work and shouldn't have to but he doesn't even help his daughter around the house but goes out to buy candy. He just comes off as mean in this version (due to no fault of the actor who was pretty adorable) I always felt that one of the ways the Tim Burton version did the book more justice was by effectively depicting grandpa Joe as a kind hearted guy who's more depressed than anything else. I find it funny because Dahl hated tv his whole life and then was salty when his books got adapted.

Absolute nightmare fuel. In the book I think they're just extremely old and in the movie it's implied that grandpa Joe, among other things, is very depressed. At least that's how I took it.

I do love this movie and it is one my favorites but I love making fun of it like you do. Also, the Oompa Loompa songs in the Tim Burton version are way better. I like the different types of music they used for the songs. Gene Wilder was absolutely perfect as Willy Wonka. There's definitely a reason why he's memed.

Most likely in the minority here, but I honestly like the Tim Burton version of the movie over the original 70’s version. Although that could be because I watched the remake first when it came out when I was little and watched the original only last year when lockdown was still in place 😅
