The only comparison between Tolkien and Martin is that they wrote the TOP fantasy series in the uk and us. It stops there. When Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings he was trying to find a vessel for his invented language and to create a myth or legend that Britain could truly call its own. Martin wrote realistic and complex characters with in a world without strict definition of good and evil, as it is in our world. There is no Joseph Cambell's hero with a thousand faces or anything really too troupey.

And obviously the Hound. - Bit of a scumbag at times but you have to love his brutal honesty.

I love the TV show and just recently got to book 2, amongst my favorite characters is also the Hound (that gif was gold!) and recently there's so much hype around the bowl I just can't wait!! I agree about the portrayal of women (and that was one of the main reasons I hesitated to get into it) but as I read and watched on I saw that it's much more complex than that, the medieval setting requires that the majority of women should act like Margaery/Cersei/Sansa, but then you get Arya, Brienne, Dany and many others...especially now, and no spoilers, in season 6 the ladies are kicking butt :D

Also George R R Martin writes women better than any other male writer I've read. Also there are plenty of female characters that use their brains rather than their cunts: Daenerys , Sansa, Arya, Asha, Olenna Tyrell, The Waif, Ygritte, Catelyn Stark, Brienne...even Cersei only started sleeping around to obtain power towards the end. Sure some of these characters have sexual relationships with others but I can only think of a few times MAYBE when any of them used it as a power play.

Ok one more then im done sorry for blowing up the comments: I too used to hate Cersei. I think if I had just watched the show and not read the books I would still hate her, but I really like her. I don't agree with how she gets her power or how she treats people at all, but having lived in her head for a couple of books, I really understand why she is like that. I pity her greatly. In my opinion, Martin made it really obvious when he made Cersei and Jamie twins. Before all the stuff with his hand goes down, Jamie is this golden boy, this perfect prince who can fight and ride and use his charms physical strength to get what he wants. In the series, Cersei remembers before they hit puberty, they did everything together, and that (i hope im remembering right) she would sometime practice jousting in his place? Anyway, she got a hint of what it was like to be Jamie, to have all that potential. And then she grew up to be a woman and all that was taken away from her. She's mad at the world. It took everything from her, her power, her freedom, becasue of her sex and so now, when we meet her in the books, she feels she dosen't owe anyone anything. And Martin layed that out for his readers by making them twins. He was like 'COMPARE THEM DO IT'. If Cersei had been born a boy, the Lannisters would have been unstoppable. With two Jamies in working order, the fight for the crown would be over, and Cersei knows that. That's why she's so fucking bitter.

Several years on, so I'm assuming you've seen the TV series now. (No spoilers for those who haven't read/watched it). I agree with a lot of what you said. I've seen the whole series and read A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings, but I know a lot of what happened in the later books. I mostly agree with the women using the "weapon between their legs" as Cercei so eloquently puts it when talking to Sansa, but certain characters don't use it, like Catelyn, Arya and Brienne. It is a factor of the time they're in, though. Their society is nothing like 21st C England. Also, there are certain male characters who don't use swords - Little Finger, the Spider, maesters, etc. Most will use swords, but others will use knowledge as power. I find the main differences between Tolkien and Martin are purple prose vs functional prose, violence, cursing and good/evil vs morally grey characters. Both fantastic authors and series, but for different reasons. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the books. I loved the show but I did find season 8 very disappointing in many areas. I did enjoy it, but there was so much story foreshadowed that got abandoned and the ending did feel rushed. I also felt that certain characters lost IQ in the last series, which I really hope doesn't happen in the books.

Now I'm going to buy all the seven books that have been released, and I'm not going to watch the second season till I finish the first and the second book. I love the charcter development and the diversity of this series. My favorite character is Jon Snow. I also grew on Daenerys. Tyrion is very interesting and I feel for his destiny. And I like aspects of Jamie Lannister and Sandor Clegane, although they are far away from being my favorites :D
@CaityLouise858 жыл бұрын
Definitely favourite being Arya. She's gone through so much and yet still keeps fighting it's just incredible. Have you seen AltShiftX's video on her? If not do, he's fantastic. But basically that's my hope for Arya and always has been. Ideally her and Jon meeting up again but I've had to give up on that..... I disagree on your argument that the female characters only use their sexuality to get ahead. I think that's very much how the men in the books see them. Really the women are doing far more than that they just aren't taken seriously for it. Certain women like Cersei and Dany kinda ruin it for the rest of the awesome women like the queen of thornes and perhaps Jayne Westerling's mother for an off the beaten track example. Where do you stand on R+L=J? (that can't be a spoiler since you need to know the elements of the equation to understand it :P) Septon Meribald's speech has to be one of the most beautiful pieces of writing in the whole series. GRRM was actually a conscientious objector during Vietnam (in case you didn't know), I always felt that was him talking with Meribald

I love game of thrones but I feel like the books would be better I really want to read them from the very beginning where should I start exactly ?

Definitely read the books from the start. Even if you have seen the show there are numerous differences in detail and story. If you were to start the book series from anything other than book 1 you may find it confusing. Plus you'd be missing out by not reading all of them as the first one is arguably one if the best

As much as the books tell a brilliant story, I think there are some scenes in the series which make it so worth while watching, for example hard home and the door; both of which you get to connect with minor characters in such a short space of time (Karsi and Hodor)

Samwell Tarly dies... eventually, I’m sure. I mean we all die one day. He could die of old age or just falling off a roller coaster.

Any advice on whether to read the books or watch the series first?
@SimonClark8 жыл бұрын
+Megan Ward I think probably read the books first as you'll pick up on a lot of subtle references in the show that are meaningful in the books but not fully explored. Plus if you're watching with someone, you know when to watch their reaction when shit is about to hit the fan...

How long did it take you to read them all?
@SimonClark8 жыл бұрын
Well I tended to alternate reading one of the books with a totally unrelated book, so probably about 6-8 months to read the lot? My friend managed to read the whole series in 8 days!

I can think of 2 female characters that use sex to get what they want. Cersei and Arianne Martell. Melisandre kinda too I guess. Dany, Brienne, Aria, Sansa, Cat and Asha don't as far as I can remember.

I agree with the portrayal of women. I haven't read the books, and I just finished Season 3 of the TV series, but yeah. A recent example would be when a "certain" character is being tortured by their "family"'s command, 2 women come in, wake him up, free him, seduce and proceed to start having sex with him. Only for the torturer to come back (he sent the 2 girls, and was watching the whole time), so he can torture him in his "most favourite body part" *ahem*. I wasn't too much of a fan until Season 3, to be honest0. took me three tries to get to this point. The Medieval setting doesn't really do it for me. However, as magic is becoming more and more prevalent; 3 pets are growing and people awaken their hidden magical power. All this is really starting to pull me into the story more, and I will definitely consider reading the books after I've finished (or caught upto) the series.
