As I explained in former videos I have found out two ways of making molds:
1. By using a 'stiff material' such as 'stationery cardboard', 'tailoring molding paper', 'transparent plastic', 'non stretchy vinyl, etc.
These materials should be used on 'FLAT SURFACES' ...just lay one of this materials over the part you want to duplicate...mark all around 'seam allowance' and small 'sewing reference lines/Vnotches', and my pieces would be ready to sewing...easy to perform!
2. Things would turn out different and not so easy! if we would need to mold 'ROUNDED or IRREGULAR AREAS'. In this case 'stiff materials' would not work efficiently.
That is when I recommended the use of a 'stretchy vinyl' to make the molds. Because of its 'fabric backing' on the reverse stretches breadthwise.
As shown in the video I am using the SECOND WAY to pattern the bottom seat side bolsters. The first 'trick' is when reaching the 'rounded area' I have stretched 'A LITTLE' the vinyl material until getting an even surface again, and so on. 'Tayloring pins' were used to immediately fasten the vinyl in place. The other 'trick' is while the molded vinyl material is thoroughly pinned I should do the 'sewing reference lines(in red)' one in front of the other. These 'marks' would be of great help at sewing procedure.
We should not forget to consider the 'stretchy side' of the material to be used (vinyl, leather, etc.) before putting the molds/templates over in the right stretchy direction.
I want to notice these molds are still 'in rough draft'. 'Paper tape' was used to correct some misalignments o mistakes. I will transfer them to stationery cardboard to get the good ones.
I hope you find some of these trick useful!
Cesar

In the stages of learning. Without these videos I would waste a lot of money, time and material etc. Finding quality products is harder than you think. Like what type foam to add to the leather. Say for instance a customer is 300 lbs. plus. What foam do you use? Size thread? Stitching distance to keep from ripping. These are things I'm still learning. When I watch Shows on restoration on TV. They send the seats out to get reupholstered and getting priced at 3000.00 and up I can easily see why. You get what you pay for. Thanks for the videos it helps a lot for me.

As for the queries you are doing yourself, it is right. That is how many things in car upholstery should be done. Usually foams come in three densities: soft, medium and hard. Foams are of standard use because they are used on car seats for anybody a heavy or light man. Regarding the stitching, as you said, it is very impórtant to consider the distance between each other to avoid ripping. A thin needle (110=18 or 120=19) to avoid big needle holes, and thin resistant thread (92) for the first 'closing sewing'. The stitches at a distance of 3 to 4 mm. Thank you very much for watching these mute videos(lol)! You are welcome anytime!

To avoid using vinyl which would then have to be thrown away, what other cheaper material could be used for curved areas? I had thought about EVA rubber, what do you think?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo Жыл бұрын
You would need to try out. The basic idea of this molding technique is once the mold is removed it should immediately recuperate its flat original shape.

@@Cechaflo Ok I'll give it a try, in the flat areas I'll use stationery cardboard, in the curves I'll use about 1mm of EVA rubber, without deforming it irreversibly. Thanks for your time, if it works or not I will update you here anyway...

I think it is the only video on youtube that shows how to mold an irregular surface or convex contours. As we can see, it consists in just stretching a 'very little' the 'stretchy vinyl', just enough to 'give shape' the 'rounded area'. The 'sewing guiding marks/V notches' would be of great help at sewing procedure. Don't miss next videos! Much appreciated your interest in learning more about this art craft!!!

Yes, I have not seen a video in KZbin showing how to mold convex contours, and you can be sure that we all appreciate it! Being able to see a quality video of a professional doing his business is a pleasure, and we learn a lot from you! :-)

How do you know when to use the stretchy side of the vinyl?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 3 жыл бұрын
If you are going to wrap a bulky surface like the bolsters of the video place over a piece of vinyl and stretch it a little first in one direction then to the other and you immediately would realize what is the stretchy side position.

What about all those needles holes you poke thru the vinyl fabric . Do you see them later on the over side . Would use the same technique with leather?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 6 жыл бұрын
No problem with the pin holes. Same technique I used to get the templates in 'stretchy vinyl' would be used for leather material. I also should follow and take advantage of 'stretchy side' of leather to give shape to rounded areas.
