Sky, the second book of A Starless Clan, has released and personally, I have exceptionally mixed feelings about it, some of which are still in limbo as I try to figure out what the Erins want me to think or where these characters and stories are going. This in addition to how so many different opinions have already been circulating about it made it the perfect time to bring in some friends to discuss it with, and give all of us chances to voice our thoughts. I definitely had a lot of fun talking with them all, so I hope you enjoy it, and of course consider checking out their channels as well if you haven’t already!

Icewing actually has a really interesting background- her son beetlewhisker died in the dark forest and she trained there as well, she got held captive and starved by darktail, she disagreed with Mistystar and got kicked out of riverclan (lived with shadowclan for a while.) She seemed to be defending Tigerheartstar as well. Not like the books will ever treat her as a true character because she isn't important, but I really like her! I really, really want her to be leader

Yeah, same! Most her mate and whole first litter is dead, and she probably saw the old forest considering Minnowtail made the journey too. She has to be my favourite background character and I was really hoping her to get more development being Mistpaw’s mentor. But seems like she wont sadly

It's true she would make a good leader, but there's one little detail that's kinda ruining that... She's old. Like, she could join the elders any moment now. I'm working on a timeline project to help with the ages of the characters and there are multiple characters in each Clan who should join the elders soon.

I sincerely hope Squirrelflight and Crowfeather won't become leaders, because they're already so old. And Leafstar has been leader for like ten years. I really wish the Erins moved on a bit on the old characters, I want to see Hawkwing become leader, the oldest characters join the elders (and the current ThunderClan elders should be joining StarClan soon), let the young generation take place.

Splashtail is definitely the antagonist. He’s involved in Frosty’s life too much and she not only trusts him but is crushing on him. Plus Splash was involved in the River bank collapse and then once Owlnose was made uh, leader I guess, they go on patrol together...later Owl makes him deputy. I think he was blackmailed. I think Mothwing is being set up as the new leader of Riverclan. She’s the furthest from the obvious and shows leadership skills. I don’t think Frostpaw has a connection but is dreaming because no one in her dreams gives her new information and when she’s alone or with Mothwing she receives no signs. I think Moth will become leader to a clan with a ned cat when can’t connect to starclan and Mothwing won’t receive nine lives. Hence, a Starless Clan

Maybe Owlnose just picked the first cat he saw fit, and wouldn't be awkward or scary to lead with (cough Duskfur) Also to say that he's "too involved" in Frostpaw's life is kinda backhanded. He encourages her and comforts her whenever she makes decisions. They are clanmates after all. If any ones a villian it's probably DuskFur.

I just finished Sky, and i honestly think Tigerstar is being genuine. He WILL help riverclan. I also think mothiwing should lead Riverclan. Finally believing in starclan because she is forced to meet them when gaining her nine lives. Splashtail will remain as deputy.

Also to me, “not the obvious choice” for me sets up possibly Nightheart or Sunbeam gaining power in Riverclan. It could go with Nightheart’s somewhat unwanted parallels to Firestar, becoming leader of a clan he wasn’t born in.

Mothwing becoming leader would be very unexpected. It'd be cool for her to not get her 9 lives too. Also, I want to see Squirrelstar! It would be really funny having Firestar's orange daughter who shares personality traits become leader and then Nightheart still be like "hnng I have so much to live up to!" Squirrelflight has been through a lot and she's so capable. I think Brambleclaw being chosen as deputy over Sandstorm was a bad idea anyway and Squirrelflight being leader would kinda be getting justice for Sandstorm. Seeing Squirrelflight get her lives from Sandstorm and Leafpool would be very emotional too... I need to start reading the books again, but I like listening to you all talk.

Tigerstar "helping out Riverclan" at the end, gave me shades of his grandfather attempting to form TigerClan in the first arc. I expect war to finally break out in the next book, with an assassination attempt on Tigerstar Jr. For everyone trying to compare nightheart and sunbeam to bristlefloof and rootspring, what's really the issue, last I checked bristlefrost died during the end of the Broken Code, soo its not like they actually got to be a couple, not to mention the community seemed to be coming around on them being together, and I saw a ton of fans upset over bristlefrost's death, so maybe let's just give nightheart and sunbeam a chance. Also, let's give the Erin's some credit for creating some interest with berryheart, it's always great to see different characters get a chance to shine, I mean the Fandom is always saying the Erin's should give its cast more background, no complaints, iam loving berryheart. And let's give nightheart a break, his emotions are all over the place, nightheart feels like his whole family is against him, he's just looking for something positive in his life, and can we blame him, his mother and grandparents are making him feel like he's dishonoring the family(seriously what is up with squirrelflight, she's definitely losing to Lillyheart in being Nightheart's favorite grandma 😆). I obviously have a lot of thoughts on everything, but it's mostly because iam just having a lot of fun following the story, I can't wait for Shadow!

The issue is that no matter how it ends, it's nothing truly new (a tom pining for a slightly older she-cat who once defended him and got rejected by her crush), even if it's well written. There's a lot of dynamics they could explore instead of that. I am all in for Nightheart moving somewhere else, but not with Sunbeam, it's boring and I don't think he suits her, too. He might have chosen Appleshine, Woodsong, some other molly that was mostly irrelevant to the plot before. As for Sunbeam, I would love to see her in a lesbian relationship (Lightleap) or simply alone, without a mate.

Honestly, I think Nightheart is supposed to be both sympathic and a unreliable narrator at the same time. Some of his clanmates do treat him badly and he's clearly self conscious, but he also assumes the worst about pretty much everyone around him. He thinks that everyone in Thunderclan hates him, when that's very clearly shown not to be the case with Cats like Jayfeather, Alderheart and Bayshine. I don't quite know what the authors are going for yet, but to me it seems like Nightheart is just an insecure person that projects his issues onto others. I also think his arc is gonna revolve around self-discovery, considering that multiple cats have asked Nightheart what kind of Warrior he wants to be. And he could never give an answer. I think that certain cats should be nicer to Night, but he also needs to change as well, because he often gets a sort of tunnel vision when he's upset

Yes! I totally agree with everything you said. I'm not a fan of Nightheart acting like no one in Thunderclan likes him. Like you said, he has family members like Jayfeather and Alderheart who are not mean to him but I guess that is not enough for Nightheart. I'm not a big fan of Nightheart because he comes across as narcissistic, but hopefully he grows as a character and changes.

I thought her love plot and decisions involving Crowfeather and the 3 were really dumb, and I just thought she was a terrible character. However, now that I’ve read them over and over and consumed so much fan content, I’ve realized that it’s the plot and the Erin’s that screwed her over :( it’s very sad. I hope the same doesn’t happen to Frostpaw or any med cat ever again.

Honestly the most uncomfortable thing about the Bramblestar-Squilf scenes in this book for ME was the whole avoiding each other thing and using Nightheart to keep secrets from each other and whatnot. Even if Nightheart is a selfish little brat, I can’t help but feel for him because it felt way too similar to how it was when my parents got divorced 😐 Just with me I was a messenger bird AND kept their secrets from each other. At this point they at least talk directly but the secret thing still bothers me. The way I naturally perceived that hit WAY too close to home.

I loved this book. I thought Riverclan leader drama was super interesting, and Nightheart is so pessimistic I love it. Tigerstar was a little out of character but it’s an interesting conflict. Only things I didn’t like were NightSun, FrostSplash, and how Fidgetflake still had no personality despite being on the cover, I wanted him to be awkward and weird but he’s just mean

I read this book today and I don’t know what to feel about this book. Edit: ok I think have finally processed how I feel about this book so here are my positives and negative’s: Positives: - While night x sun was SUPER obvious at the very least they didn’t drag it out for the entire series - I love how chaotic thunderclan, riverclan, and shadowclan right now as the plot doesn’t seem to be slowing down right now (and hopefully doesn’t fall off in the middle of the series). - All the clans POV’s are actually interesting - I love the fact that the Erin’s aren’t making the plot SO obvious that we are just able to predict the entire plot - Berryheart is actually a good villain Negatives: - Why does frostpaw need a mate? - Why are we having Bramblestar and Squirrelflight argue again - Why is Frostpaw getting no character development? - Why are characters acting out of character for the sake of the plot (I’m looking at you squirrelflight) -Why does night x sun even exist Mixed feelings: - I do not know if I like Nightheart or not - Bramblestar

I totally understand why one would dislike the book, but I've never had more fun reading a warriors book 🤣 I love this new series, it's so interesting. And there's a lot of tie-ins to real life with all the political turmoil going on.

One thing I was disappointing about was the thing with Lightleap. She seemed like she needed to prove herself to her clan after what happened by doing dangerous things. I found this intriguing but after Blazefire got hurt we never really saw a resolution to that, she just kind of went back to normal.

this is extremely unlikely but i think it would be hilarious if nightheart ended up becoming the next riverclan leader. he's an unlikely choice, just like in frostpaw's "vision"! theyve really been hammering in the whole firestar stuff! now that he's moving to shadowclan, he will very probably be in contact with riverclan and give him a reason to be invested in riverclan politics maybe! this has a like 0.01% chance of happening but i think it would be Extremely funny

But here ... I think this book should have been called "Shadow". SPIOLERS Nightheart moves to Shadowclan and ShadowClan took over RiverClan, so ... why "Sky"?

I think I saw this on a tweet thread but it seems that Night x Sun is not going to work, like in the books when they think of each other they don't do it as in other romances where they are obsessed with each other, but more like they're friends and maybe a little confused about how they feel They may end up as mates when Night goes to ShadowClan only to discover they don't feel that way, or maybe Sunbeam would be the one to reject him (maybe to avoid conflict with her mother or because she will know Night enough to dislike him) Either way I don't think is gonna work, but the writers wants us to think they will be "yet another interclan romance we're tired of" just to break a little the cliche lol

i know everybody hates sunbeam and nightheart’s romance, i knew it before anybody even said anything about them. but i actually think they’re super cute! he was mad at lightleap on sunbeam’s behalf and they’re extremely supportive of each other. nightheart’s such an edgy little guy he’s like “nobody understands or appreciates me!!” and keeps making a fool of himself and sunbeams like “okay dear.. let’s take a deep breath.” they’re adorable

I really did like their interactions on the little patrol. I did groan at her mentioning how handsome he was THREE TIMES in the same chapter, but at least there wasn’t insta-love. They enjoyed being friends first, and enjoyed each other’s company. And when the tired cliche of “fell asleep leaning on the other character” came up, he just kinda laughed at her about it and didn’t think about it romantically at all.

I honestly would have liked Squirrelstar if the Erins got to go with their original plan of Bramble leaving after the Last Hope, but Harper's Collins didn't allow it. Now she's just.. old, and any stories they could have told with her are gone. Bramble sucked, Squirrel's too late to matter, and Ivy will be super washed by the time she gets a chance. We'll never have another story similar to Firestar's. I was really hoping Nightheart's arc would land him as deputy, because out current arc POVs never get to do anything meaningful anymore. Well, not helped by the arcs covering such small amounts of time now.

As much as I didn’t want the trope to continue, with a series heavily focusing on the difficultly of inter-clan relationships under the old code, it was pretty obvious that they were going to focus on another one in the next series with a brand new set of regulations. Honestly, I kind of like the idea of Nightheart and Sunbeam getting together. But I don't want them to stay together. I want there to be a lot of outside pressure to their relationship that causes them to like fall apart and find a different route. I think it could be really interesting story in particular to see a she cat pov who failed at two separate relationships. Also I do not think that Maple Shade will be returning this Arc, but if there was never an arc for her to return in, this would be the one. Like her whole story is about a cross Clan relationship that resulted in the death of seven cats. Her whole story and the sarkar pretty similar in the fact that it's about cross Clan relationships. And if there was ever a time for her to return it would be now. It could make her very interesting storyline

What I don't really get about this book is why it is called 'Sky'. Rootspring and Fidgetflake appear, but only really in small roles, and SkyClan is pretty irrelevant otherwise. Before I started reading ASC, with just the blurb of River to go off, I'd expected Leafstar to die in this book. I mean, she's by a very long stretch the longest leader in office (before TNP versus Mistystar from early OotS/Bramblestar from late OotS), and can't have been that much younger than Mistystar either. It's a huge surprise she still has lives left. Consider that Blackstar and Firestar got leadership not much before her, and Onestar even after her. All of them have been gone for a while now. I like Leafstar, but especially with her being the only modern SkyClan leader ever it would have been really interesting to watch the Clan cope with her being gone. My original assumption seeing the book titles was that all the Clans would lose their leaders (though probably not in the same chaotic way as RiverClan, with leader and deputy gone). That'd have shaken the cast up a little and changed dynamics between Clans. And not all of them would necessarily have to die - it makes sense for Leafstar, but you could also have leaders retire or be demoted, now that there has been a precedent for the former and the latter is theoretically established.

I think personally the editors have been trying the past few arcs to make warriors more “relatable”. But I also can’t tell what I’m supposed to take Nightheart to be. A trans allegory? A angsty whiny teen? It feels like they’re going the direction where both TC and Nightheart will apologize to each other. A “parents aren’t perfect either and adults should apologize too” type trope. However between Nightheart and more BrambleSquirrel arguments, I find the TC POV exhausting. The SC POV is just boring compared to the RC plot. I also feel it’s definitely setting up Mothstar. She’s the only one they’ve consistently setup so far and she makes the most sense. It’s so hard to make any assumptions on Splashtail because the subtext if it’s there just barely exists and it’s to the point I feel like I’m just willing into existence something interesting on him when the evidence in the text doesn’t really support it.

I feel like Leafpools kits and SquirrelFlights kits aren’t treated with the same Firestar reverence is possibly due to how agaist the rules Leaf’s kits were. Fidgetflake: I'm sorry. Owlnose: She was a loyal Clanmate and she loved Frostpaw and her littermates very much. Fidgetflake: What happened to the dogs? Fidgetflake went from not knowing about the dog attack and Curlfeather's death to asking about the dogs on the same exact page without anyone mentioning what killed her. There's a small possibility that Fidgetflake just wasn't thinking about the fact that Frostpaw's mom had died and she had heard how, but not where, but that just seems like an odd choice on the author's part. It seems more likely to me that they were giving us a clue.
