Use a a rural mail box and add a couple of small round 2 in vents. You will have to use a little engineering...but you will figure it out when talking about weather protection

Can you make a video about the best solar powered fence charger for goats? Most of the solar powered fence chargers I see have very low joules and I would like to find something with a little more oomph that can be reliably used outdoors. Can you recommend something? Thank you!

If you want solar with goats, you'll have to end up using a stand along 12v powered unit with a solar panel of a certain size to maintain the battery. You'll want to get at a minimum of 4 output joules for goats. Here are the units I would recommend. Gallagher MBS800 5.9 output joules, Cyclops Champ 12v 5+/- output joules, or one of my units we have made for us, but I'm currently waiting on them to show up.

Here's a video of my old school unit. We will offer a 1.5, 3, 6, 9, and 12 output joule unit. The one in the video is an 8 output joule unit and we are going to have some changes made to the unit, mostly cosmetic with the lights and higher voltage. What do you think of external lightning protection, like diverters or inline fusing/fusible links away from the box? Lightning blew apart my last junky little charger for the dogs, but I'm about to buy a big charger for farm use and want to add extra protection if indeed it's worthwhile. Or maybe you never think about how chargers are installed and what could be done to slow down your repair orders... I get that too.

Lightning is hard on things. There's all sorts of things that manufacturers put inside units to try and help things out, fuses, internal lightning diverters, lightning protection boards on the output inside the unit etc, but they all still get hit from time to time. The best two things you could do is get a Gallagher lightning diverter for the output side between the unit and fence, and if it's an ac powered unit, hey a plug in surge protector. Other than that, just hope it doesn't get hit I guess lol. The good thing though when you buy a new unit, lightning damage is part of their warranty.

I’m doing a small 50ft by 50ft 5 strand poly wire fence with low vegetation for goats. I prefer solar so I can move it around when needed. On the energizer selector on Gallagher’s website it says I need the S20 fencer. It has really low joule output. But that’s what they recommend. It’s only 1,300 ft of wire. I know it’s plenty for that amount of wire but I’m worried it won’t shock hard enough to keep the goats in. I’m on a budget so I really need to stay under $300. How many joules do I need for goats?

You need a minimum of 3 output joules of power for goats, and it would be ideal to have 5-6 joules. The issue you're going to run into is finding a solar unit that's an all in one unit with battery and solar panel built into the unit in the 3-6 joule range, especially in your price range that you're after. What you're probably going to have to do is get a 12v powered unit that will run off an external 12v deep cycle battery and then get the correct solar panel set up for it.

Here's the units you can look at, they're all going to probably be over the amount you're wanting to pay. The only way to save money at the moment is to buy a 12v unit strong enough and either 1 12v battery or 2 12v batteries to have a spare on charge to swap out if you don't want to have a solar system for it. Here are the units... Cyclops champ 12v (6.3 stored joules 5 output) Gallagher MBS400 (4 stored joules 3 output) or MBS800 (8 stored joules 5.9 output joules) Power Wizard PW500XD (8 stored 5 output joules) Speedrite 6000 (10 stored joules 6 output)

@@FencerFixerRepairLLCKansasCity Awesome thank you very much! My brother has a brand new Parmak 12 solar. He is only running 1300 ft of wire. I watched your video on testing it and everything tests out in good working condition on the charger itself. When the goats touch it they don’t even flinch. We have 3 separate 4ft galvanized ground rods spaced 10 feet apart in good soil. It doesn’t have any weeds or anything on it. Could it be the wires going to the fence and ground or is it just not strong enough to bother the goats? We used 12 gauge stranded copper wire with coating to go from charger to fence and ground. We used the bigger clamp with two bolts to attach power wire to fence wire.

It's just not strong enough for goats. Goats are some of the hardest animals to make respect the fence. I would test the fence and make sure the fence is hot and actually working and see what the voltage is on the line, but it's likely just not stout enough for the goats. Goats need about 4-6 joules minimum to make respect the fence.

Don’t know how the battery set up would work this will be my first time doing an electric fence. Thank you!
