I have a newer style of S17 and the large transformer has gone bad. Any word or where a guy can get a replacement transformer.

Yes because 6v is 6v. It won't make the unit and stronger it just might run a couple more days longer before it runs down the battery if you go a more than a week or two without much sunlight.

My unit drops in and out light flashes more than a 2nd any ideas?

it's probably circuit board related. We might be able to fix the board inside if you want to send the board here, worse case we have to get you a new board to install back into your unit.

mine reads 1.17v battery diconnected testing the solar panel it reads 7.9v how much do they normally read dirict from the solar panel

At the solar panel directly and testing it outside, it should be around 10-11 volts dc. If it's only reading 7.9 volts at the panel, then once you plug the panel back in, it'll likely drop down to around 3-5 volts at the battery leads. You might take things outside and retest the battery leads and the panel with the unit turned off and just see if things change.

Which is cheaper to buy parts for the s17 or to buy a new/used one??

To buy parts to fix the older one, such we do every year. You can't buy a new S17 unit, it's discontinued and the S20 took it's place and cost around $265 +/- All the parts are still available for it

what if the light is solid red regardless of the off/on position of the switch?

Something is definitely wrong with the board inside. That fault isn't too common to happen. One only personally seen it a small handful of times and that hasn't happened in a few years.

That's not a clock in the background, that's an electric fence charger. We're a repair shop that works on electric fence chargers, and most of them click, some louder than others.

Is there still parts for a s17 available? Prices?

Yes I believe so the parts are still made today. They make the S22 board today vs the S17 board, which makes it stronger, $125, but we can typically fix the boards vs replacing the whole board. The comparable unit to this unit is the S20 which sells for $250-$265. Solar panels don't go bad that often, and they're kind of expensive at around $100 +/- but I usually retrofit a different solar panel into it if it goes bad, but I have to have that here to do it. If the board ever goes out, send me just the board by itself.
