Bass Ackwards Or, or he could have been confused that a nation so close to the UK, litterally connected (Northern Ireland) which even speaks English and drives on the same side of the road doesn't use the Pound but instead uses the Euro reguardless of not even being connected to the mainland of Europe!
@Soph-bc2of6 жыл бұрын
Aveyonn being connected to the mainland has nothing to do with it? nor does the side of the road we drive on or the proximity to england. our first language is irish, not english. we’re part of the eu so we use the euro, as do almost all of the european countries, save the uk. northern ireland is part of the uk so it only makes sense that they use the pound also, whereas the republic are in no way, shape or form part of britain so we use the euro. it’s not a difficult thing to grasp
@peterd4405 жыл бұрын
@@Soph-bc2of Irish is a language used but it's hardly the first language because that implies it's used widely in ordinary life. I remember when Ireland was linked to Sterling and then had the Punt and then the Euro. There's certainly a case for saying going into the Euro was a mistake (actually it's still difficult to justify joining). One thing is certain and that is it was easier to get out of Sterling than it would be with the Euro. The bank disaster would not have happened outside the Euro. The worst part of the Euro is that another crisis will happen because interest rates are not set at the best level for small countries but Germany and France.

You'd think considering the USA also fought for independence from Britain you'd understand this or at least have heard about it. The Irish War of Independence? No? @OceanBlue irish are spread all over the world. We invented the submarine many alcohols and much more. Never associate us with the uk. We worked for centuries to be free from them. Unfortunately we couldn't free the whole country and Northern Ireland is still part of the uk. Clearly u are American so let me give u one example of why we don't like the uk, more specifically England. In the 1840s we had a patatoes famine. Patatoes were the main food in the Irish diet, almost all other food we were forced to export. Because of this we had nothing else to eat when the spuds went bad. England controlled our government and they should have brought in relief food to keep their citizens alive, but they didn't. Long story short, the Irish population was halved due to this, they either died or were forced to emigrate to America ( which is why there are so many Americans of Irish decent) Some consider this to be genocide ( the deliberate killing of a certain group or race) on England hand because they saw what was going on and it was their job to help but they didn't. To this day we still haven't recovered population wise but are nearly there. This is just one of many reason we don't associate with Britain or the uk.

Ireland technically had the pound until 1999. It was independent of the Pound sterling (UK's currency) and was colloquially known as the Punt. Before the adoption of the Euro, the Punt was stronger than the Pound Sterling!

😂 It’s not a bad question actually because the UK is located between the Irish Republic and mainland Europe and yet, the Irish use the Euro which is controlled by the Germans!… In other words, the UK is closer to mainland Europe than the Irish Republic!… Logically, with the proximity, the English language, long historical, business & family ties and both even drive on the wrong side of the road, it makes much more sense for the Republic of Ireland to use the Pound Sterling.
