We dont use random heavy english words while talking. Vikram Seth is an author and Indians, when we talk in Hindi or Urdu, we tend to be more poetic. That thing when translated to English is good for READING, but not for talking. No one talks like Shashi Tharoor in real life. Its absurd. Exactly Infact nowadays, what I have started thinking is that the so called "masala" heroes, do not take their "roles" seriously. Yes, it should look like you are having fun, but the problem is that the actors not taking themselves seriously in the film, instead of having fun with the character, they have fun on sets. For example, in KICK, Nawazuddin Siddiqui the so called "arty" actor, took his character and ran with it. It felt like he was having fun, however he took his character seriously, and had fun with the character. However, salman khan has fun, but on the sets. Even in Tevar, I found this problem

Again like you said, this series is made for an international audience which is why making sure that the words spoken by the characters r understandable without subtitles is a necessity, making sure the words r pronounced properly may sound rigid to some.

The accent was rigid because the time the story was set in. We have evolved so much now with the language but keeping in mind about the environment of 1951, it shows that in 1951 we weren't introduced to what we call as mordern language. The language has major influence of British English at that time like "Z" was pronounced as Zed not "Z" Zee. The makers had to change the accent for the characters.

She has been killing it in various movies Namesake, Haider, Andhadhun, Drishyam and even subtle comedies like Golmaal 4, Jawaani Jaaneman, De De Pyar De even Biwi#1. The best thing about her she doesn’t go and self promote herself in social media and such like other acctress that’s why people don’t acknowledge her as much until she shows up on screen kills it in her role leaves an impression and moves to next one. I didn’t even care if she gets an award or not, because I feel even she knows when she watches her movie she tells herself “I was freaking awesome in this movie”.

These are some of the problems I had with the series: 1) being a student in a university, LAta’s character surely travels way too much. I was losing track of their location at one point. I sympathized with Haresh at the ‘mean’ comment because the dude was trying so hard to impress her and her family and she was more interested in botanical gardens instead of making up her mind about him. She blissfully enjoyed traveling, elaborate lunches and company of all suitors and took an eternity to finally settle with the husband material personality. . 2) i agree that many actors were underutilized, such as Vijay Raaz, Vivaan Shah, Vijay Verma and Randeep Hooda. But more than that I was miffed at the fact that Tabu is being stereotyped now as this mysterious femme fatale! This is not the first time she has played a courtesan or a lady with tragic fate in love. She deserves better roles. . 3) the amount of sex and nudity shown was just not required. It did not serve any purpose and turned Randeep Hooda into a mere prop. He deserves much better. . 4) Meenakshi and her sister were hamming so much that I wanted to get inside the screen and splash a glass of water on them. . 5) im a shia muslim. The procession scene was highly accurate with Firoz declaring the Imam Hussain lines with precision. However, Tabu is shown praying in a Sunni Muslim way. That was an oversight. . The things I loved about the show: . 1) The actor who played Firoz. He has what we call in urdu ‘Kitabi chehra’. Very handsome and very poised. . 2) I want the entire wardrobe of Lata, please. Where can i buy those heavenly sarees? . 3) The train sequence when Lata proposes Haresh. It was kind of a full circle moment, from the time they first saw each other at a train station. . Overall, a one time watch for me.

This show is set in post-independence India. You need to realize that at that time, English was spoken among the higher class as a result of the post-colonial hangover. The novel itself is in English and that's important to the story because it shows that despite being free, India was still stuck in the mindset of British India where English and Western Culture were considered better. Society back then was whitewashed and it took many many years for society to regain any pride in our culture. I've read the novel and while many things have been changed for a Western audience, the language and the way Indian society worked back then is not one of them. I have many problems with the show, English being the main language is not one of them.
@jasleenxxbrar4 жыл бұрын
@UCSAQ986OAqYpsYlRFgXjj_A This is set in 1951 and 1952. It was a completely different time. English was more spoken among the elite. It's a sad part of post-independence India's history that despite fighting so hard for our culture and our language and everything our country stood for, English was the main medium of communication for a lot of Indians in those years. This was because people from different parts of India spoke vastly different languages. Also, its important to note that this show takes place among the elite who considered English important for progress. I would argue that that was wrong since it diminished the importance of our own vernacular languages. These people likely only spoke in English and felt most comfortable in it. hence, they displayed their anger in that language. An accent does not mean that these people weren't comfortable with English. They just pronounced words and spoke the way they were taught. Thats why the "Indian accent" covers a broad range of accents. People speak the way they are taught.

I can tell you that it isn't wrong AT ALL! I have been teaching English as a Second and Foreign Language since 2009 and have been doing so in India since 2011 with my very first project being a Microsoft initiative for the Indian Army. From there I worked with a couple of Language Schools wherein international students made up only 15% of the total numbers so I have worked with Indian candidates for the most part; be it private, group sessions, or corporate assignments AND from all of that I can testify that even now, in 2020, people talk like that where they sound each and every consonant with the biggest and harshest sounding one being the 't' sound which is there in Hindi but is a rather soft 'th' in English. They did differentiate between some characters who might have studied in the English Grammar schools or were in the government services still being mostly under the British administration or heads as there are senior citizens from those days who speak rather proper 'Queen's English' with at times the clearest of dictions. There was Tom Alter and nowadays Kalki who have international origins but have studied here and speak all languages beautifully compared to many Indians who still speak English with the Hindi accent. Therefore, I don't think they were wrong in that. Cheers!

I saw this just now and started wondering how stupid everyone is shown to the international audience. What message it gives away? Are we always fighting? Are we always copying Britishers? Does our families are so broken up from inside? Is this what a young son starts doing in his youth? The book was an exception from life in India but a piece of art in literature and should only be seen as a fiction without any reference to cultural or communalism behaviours in India..

I feel the same. I watched this series in the month of September when it first released on BBC. People may have a mixed feeling regarding this adaptation. Well I had great expectations but it was not up to the mark. I wish the story would have been about "A suitable girl " for Maan. Ishaan Khattar made me forget about who really was while watching the series. Throughout the serious I could see Maan in him.

i personally loved everything about this series. I watched the hindi dub and it did feel weird but I wanted to enjoy the hindi and urdu dialogues. And Maan's mother's acting was so brilliant! When she tells Praan that she wants to meet Maan in the jail rn she doesn't say anything because she is so hurting she is struggling to get the words out of her mouth and conveys it through exaggerated hand gestures. I started crying during that scene I could feel her pain. And about Mrs Mehra's mannerisms, she seemed to me as an indian version of a Victorian mother whose whole purpose in life is to find the richest men for her multiple daughters so she acts all chirpy and excited trying to mix with the high society. I could see the characteristics taken from the trope and I honestly enjoyed it. It was fun to watch her get happy when things were going her way and she acted like she's the boss and it was funny when she started to cry over slight inconveniences. It was funny to me. Another scene that melted my heart was in E6 when Tasmeena calls Saeeba "ammi" and they both sing together. Truly beautiful.

So, I’m just two episodes into the series when I got the notification for your review. I’m not Indian, but what drew me to Indian cinema was the language itself. So to watch a so-called Indian series where the opening dialogue, and probably more than 70% of the dialogues are in English seemed a bit off for me. However, I listened to Anupama’s review of the series and I’ve decided to give it a try. On the issue of the use of English. I honestly didn’t find a problem with the use of words like “shan’t” etc. It perfectly fits for a country who just got its independence from the British during that period. I come from a country that was also colonized by the British, and i have some knowledge of how the people then used to speak English.

Does the actress Latika has the power to the future? In her college scene, she told her friend that when she was in the university with her she feels modern and independent like a 20th-century woman but now as she is staying with her elder sister she feels like she is going backward. The series is set between 1951 & 1952 if am not wrong the how Latika can see how 20th-century women live in society? Time travel is power gain kya us ke pass?

The good: 1. Tanya Manaktala got a big break that she deserved. 2. Ram Kapoor and Aamir Bashir were perfect for their roles. Both are great actors and should get better opportunities. 3. Ishaan Khattar did pashchaatap for Khaali Peeli through this series. What's bad: 1. Great actors like Tabu, Vijay verma, Randeep hooda, Vijay Raaz, Manoj Pahwa and Rasika Dugal got wasted. IMO Maan's chemistry with Feroz was more beautiful and I wanted to see these two guys more rather than seeing Maan with Sayyeda. Because Sayyeda is too beautiful and too elegant to be enamored by a barely adult boy's charms. I mean come on. I know, I know that it is based on a novel written during the period when two guys posing as lovers was considered a crime. But what to do I seriously sensed more chemistry between these two guys.

I was disappointed with the story with stereotypes. It just shocks me how one part of the same section is always shown as abusive and the other as tolerant, whereas evidence points otherwise. It is sad to see this always comes from Western filmmakers that try very hard to continue to watch India as exactly Britishers wanted India to be seen when they left.

Good work. It's better than many Indian movies. It's a period film and throughout the film, the viewer is drawn exactly to that era. All characters have acted very well. Tanya Maniktala and Ishaan Khatter have excelled. Some more glamour could be added to Tabu, as her natural beauty is fading away due to age. Her daughter's looks could have been prettier than a maid. Those deaths could have been avoided. Technically it's much much better than any Bollywood movie. Thanks to Mira Nair for a good job.
