You extended the house 'towards' the driveway, and I was wondering if their plot of land allowed for that? As you might be aware, since I think you've got some experience in the Netherlands, plot sizes and streets can pose some restrictions and my brain thought the ' driveway' was a passing street you couldn't jus extend your house in :p
@jlt1319 ай бұрын
@@LittleLion_90property setbacks and allowances would definitely have to be checked. this also appears to have magically added a bit more floor space, meaning also higher building costs. in my part of north america, the average house is around $300/sq ft (or more) to build so adding even a little more can get expensive!

My boyfriend and I are moving into the house his sister used to live in. It was hard to imagine what WE would do with the different spaces because I had in my mind what SHE did with those spaces. She has 2 kids, we don't, so the way we will use the same house is so different! It took getting out my notebook and planning it from a strictly feng shui perspective. Once I went back to the "rule book" instead of being clouded by what used to be there, I found the optimal setup for us! Your videos prepared me for a year for this task lol!

Stacking the bedrooms right on top of each other is a great way to make sure inhabitants can hear people in the other bedrooms getting weird through the walls. As a residential architectural and interior designer, I'm cringing just a little. I'm on board with taking advantage of the views and sheltering the private spaces from the driveway and public view. However, I would imagine there has to be some feng shui standards about bedroom doors opening directly into public areas. There's no privacy, nor protection from sound. Sound and light are often overlooked in home design, yet they make the biggest impact. I would suggest extending the hallway and adding a turn. This would block the view from the living area and entry into the bedrooms as well as break the path of sound so it doesn't amplify down the hall *right* into the primary bedroom! Right now that hallway is going to act like a sound tunnel and we all know how much sound echoes in tunnels!

Huh, I thought feng shui prefers the front door to be visible from the street (except perhaps a chaotic street) near the center of the front, and not L shaped with a "missing" corner. Personally I would always try to put the laundry as close as possible to a door accessing an appropriate part of the yard for an outdoor clothesline. Sun-dried laundry is not only green but the most luxurious for bedding.

So... what you can do to plan better when you have a conveniently large piece of land, and aren't affected by zoning setbacks, or other restrictions of the exterior built form. .. such as increasing the cost by increasing the wall area and complexity of the shape... but yet want to build bedrooms that barely fit the (presumably to scale) bed. Makes perfect sense.
@EJHRB8 ай бұрын
I would add some sort of separation between the foyer and the dining room that the two bedrooms open up to for more privacy (wooden slats or shelves or bookcase. Doesn't have to be a wall). Imagine having guests and someone is in one of the bedrooms and wants to come out/or in without being seen. That big foyer also seems to be alot of wasted space.

Looks good, though if I were doing it I'd try to a) have the new home fitting exactly onto the old foundation, so I don't have to create a new bit of foundation (which will potentially settle over time at a different rate than the existing foundation, leaving the house with unevennesses in the floors.) And b) I'd try and do it in such a way that I won't have to move too many water and sewerage pipes around. As per this design, it seems to me (and I'm not an expert, so perhaps my concerns are unfounded,) that to get your new plan going, you more or less have to demolish the existing home and start again, practically from scratch. I don't want to take anything away from your design though. Layout-wise, the new home seems a lot nicer and more usable.
@PaintingandExercise9 ай бұрын
This is very nice but I think that most homes should be built with closets or bathrooms between bedrooms for noise buffering and more privacy. I like that you eliminate the wasteful long hallways. They only work if you can put console tables, narrow furniture, or built in cabinets in them. I may have tried putting the "kids" bedrooms more towards the front of the house and the entire master suite along the rear of the house. I really love the work that you do.

If it were me (not a feng shui expert by any means, but I do think about how we live & move in a given space), I'd turn that M/E room's entrance a quarter turn to the right (toward the opened hall area), and put a bench seat along the wall facing the front door. This would prevent all the incoming energy from ramming into that mechanical/electrical room, or being constantly confronted by an always closed door that people might mistake for a closet, but it isn't. (It just feels like you're being blocked in your life when you come home only to see as the very first thing a constantly shut door right there in your face.) Instead, you will have that nice bench to sit on, where you can take off your outdoor shoes and put on your indoor shoes, making it very disabled/elderly/tired after a long day friendly. (Just make it wide enough for 2 people, or for a person and a bag or purse or briefcase, so they don't feel cramped or crowded when doing what needs to be done.) I would also add a corner table on the side next to the passageway to the rest of the house if there's room. Give it a rounded or at least angled front to prevent clumsy people from banging their leg against the sharp corner, and you have a convenient place to put items, whether it's a plant, a lamp, a basket for incoming or outgoing mail, keys, or so forth. It will help channel the flow of movement without feeling like you're being confronted by sharp toothy corners on both sides. I was taught that inner corners of rooms (angles poking into the room), much like beams crossing above furniture, feel like it's psychologically "poking" or "cutting" into a person. The last thing you need when you come home after a long day of work is to have to face choppers or snippers ready to pinch and pierce you mentally, just to get into your own safe space. So it's either put a curved or angled table against that corner to blunt its sharpness (a cheap solution), or (if you have the funds & the room), build a bit of diagonal wall off of each of the two corners and turn it into an angled archway. (This of course depends on how much room you have to build an archway that you can still get furniture through, of course.) Having the bench visually there each time you come home pre-prepares your brain to *think* about resting as soon as you come in. Softening those two corners as you pass through them to the rest of the house helps you to relax the need to constantly keep up your guard. It's a great little psychological trick to make sure your home is restful and comforting!

How would you set it up so the primary bedroom isn’t sharing a wall with the other bedrooms? I’m not a fan of kids or guests being on the other side of my bedroom wall
@nr77019 ай бұрын
That was my thought too. I don't necessarily want to share a wall with a kid's bedroom if I can help it. I guess it makes most sense to put the master closet, maybe a bathroom or dining room, inbetween the master bedroom and other bedrooms without knowing more details (direction of sunlight, plumbing setup, specific wants of the client, etc.) (The kitchen and living room are also options that'll want a nice view, but might get too loud if someone is asleep in the next room.)
