I learned something crazy recently, you can use the Heine Borel Theorem (i.e Borel-Lebesgue Theorem) to characterize the "infinite dimensionality" of a vector space, if a closed and bounded set isn't compact, then your vector space cannot be finite dimensional. The theorem holds in R^n, so in finite dimensional vector spaces over R or C, but fails for something like l^2

I proved that theorem during my topology course this semester and it's called Riesz's theorem which can be proved with Riesz's lemma. I was quite shocked too when I learned about it.
