I was absolutely in awe of the filmmaking and transitions in this film. Let alone the brilliant and engaging plot that I feel like I only began to scratch the surface of on my first watch. I can’t wait to hear your opinions and thoughts on this one. I hope you enjoyed my Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) movie reaction & commentary

You don't need to worry about us watching the YT edit. Remember, most of us have seen this movie and are just enjoying your reaction to it. Which I very much did. Birdman is an excellent film and I was very into it when it came out. Seen it dozens of times now and still marvel at the technical and acting achievement that it is even 10 years later. Really reinvigorated Michael Keaton's career. He was nominated for Best Actor for this role.

There are arguably few actors who have gotten more recognition for their artistic integrity than Michael Keaton. Since his decision to pass on the Batman franchise in favor of Shakespeare, "artistic integrity" has become sort of a religion in Hollywood. There are plenty of actors who would go to great lengths to ensure that their own artistic integrity is recognized, so long as whatever they're turning down pays better, whatever they're doing instead is more artistic, and above all, everyone's watching. My favorite scene in this movie is when his daughter is yelling at him about how he's only doing the play to feel relevant again, because it confirms that his character is really more of a nameless fictional wannabe on the Michael Keaton bandwagon than a fictionalized version of Michael Keaton himself (I'm drowning in meta, and I LOVE it!). Glad you got to check this out. Easily one of the best films of the last 20 years, or at least one of my favorites. BTW, if memory serves, there are 14 edits in this entire film (the average film has between 7-800), and most of them are absolutely seamless so it seems like even less.

Brother, this YT edit was great. I LOVED this movie - I don't understand it totally, but I love movies that break with what is expected and that surprise me. And the acting is great and filmed so that you Cammy look away for a minute. Then there's the meta casting choices. Michael Keaton playing an actor trying to be an artistic success after being an action hero. Edward Norton as the brilliant method actor who had trouble getting work because he's so difficult to work with. Naomi Watts as a great actress who can't escape her beauty. Utterly brilliant on every level!

I love the “it’s so f**king lazy” scene between Michael Keaton and Lindsay Duncan. Two great actors ripping into each other.

This is a very unique film. I was already familiar with the director from 21 Grams and Babel. Birdman was nominated for many Oscars, won several that year, including Best Picture. He also did The Revenant, which Leo finally won for. Like the Coen brothers, their work is incredibly distinct. Glad you reacted to this.

Please add Johnny Dangerously and Multiplicity to your list - Michael Keaton is SUCH a talented comedic answer, it's so weird that the younger generation only knows his serious roles.

The "bliss in ignorance" idea is curios to me. On one hand, continuing a film franchise which would've led to greater fame/fortune further alienating himself from his daughter and never finding a passion project; on the other, pursuing a self-destructing though potentially life affirming goal. Both accrue what he wanted but were pyrrhic. Was he better off never hoping for more? I love this movie! Great reaction!

I think he jumped to his death and when his daughter looked up, it was because she was realizing he is in a better place she can't see and he went out getting what he wanted; literal death and this huge recognition of his "talent".

One of the earlier efforts to make a movie with "no cuts" was Alfred Hitchcock's Rope (1948). Russian Ark (2002) actually did it with digital technology though it's not very plot-driven. Birdman probably managed to do it best. I think of it as a spiritual sibling to Black Swan (2010).

This is a great reaction to a great film, and a great edit too! Vague enough to keep you guessing, clear enough to convey its message of madness, fame, egotism, pride, and decay. Also the actors do such a good job of convincing you that they're within the world of the film, whether they're acting in-film or being real in-film, without giving away that they're acting for the movie itself; a real accomplishment.

Not knowing much about a movie produces the best reaction - The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance. Instead of Batman - they called it Birdman. This film is a critic on Super hero movies. The sudden explosion and monsters fighting in the middle of this movie is jarring - it's done on purpose to show the silliness. The theatres in the East coast have very low opinion of the entertainment industry in the West coast. The one take shot is a representation of the theatre - where there is no cut or edit, live theatre is like a single take shot. The Coen Brother's film "Barton Fink" also explored the same theme.

Excellent reaction! I'm so glad you liked this movie - I agree, it's absolutely brilliant 😁 For a deeper understanding of the film, you may want to read the (real) short story the play-within-film is based on: Raymond Carver's "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love." The story deals with the same sort of complicated, messy realities of human relationships the characters of the film are dealing with in their "real" lives... Add on top of that the Michael Keaton/Batman vs. Riggan/Birdman parallels...So as a result, you get this effect of life and art reflecting each other back and forth like fun house mirrors. It's genius 🤯

Thanks for the suggestion! This more than most movies feels so much like an onion, layers on layers and several significant themes that could be brought out.

also Edward Norton leaning into his reputation as a great actor but terrible to work with, as there are many stories of him rewriting scenes and telling the director and other actors how to perform their scenes

I think this film is amazing. Michael Keaton is amazing as well as the entire cast. Now having said that, I come away from it feeling sad. I was confused at first trying to figure this out but then it was just sad until the end.

My take. Riggin kills himself on stage. The hospital scene is all a fantasy either in the cab or in his dying moments.
