My son was gay (he’s deceased… but not the point) but even until he died (2016) he was in the closet with our extended family. Only his parents and his friends knew. I always wished he would feel comfortable being honest with who he was. As many attentive parents do, I was pretty sure he was gay but it took him a lot of time to admit it to even himself. The first time I got him to open up about it a little, he admitted to taking online quizzes to determine whether he was gay. He truly used these quizzes, probably in 2009 at age 14, to explore the possibility that he might be gay. So anyway, some kids really did use these stupid quizzes to figure this out because they didn’t feel safe exploring their feelings with friends. I’m glad things are changing now.

Another funny (?) thing about these quizzes is that they remind me of the official medical questionnaires I had to fill out in order to get to transition medically. Imagine these kinds of questions, only with better spelling and no slurs explicitly written out in the text. Then imagine that some old man in a white coat is sitting in the same room as you and staring at you while you fill out these questions, and you know that if you laugh, you risk getting denied access to medical transition because “you’re not taking this as seriously as you should”.

Oh hell yeah, that’s what I had to deal with in that exact moment in time! I kept doing similar online quizzes and reading fanfiction to see if I was gay or this was just temporary and I’d grow out of it, just like my biology textbook in school reassured me that I’d do. As it turns out, I did not grow out of it, and now I’m engaged to a wonderful man to boot! This is oddly charming to me, I guess because I genuinely went on those kinds of websites and figured that surely these other 14-year-olds would be able to figure out what I myself couldn’t. It was extra weird because I’m a trans guy who’s gay, and it took a while for me to figure out that it was a possibility for me, that you can actually be a guy who’s into guys no matter what chromosomes you were born with.

This is an aside but I wonder what year your biology textbook was written in that it 1) addressed attraction to the same gender, and 2) said it’s a phase. @@darkstarr984This reminded me of how I would genuinely keep rereading a bit in my own biology textbook about intersex people, hoping that I could be like the woman in the textbook and discover as a teen/adult that I was always actually "male" in some biological way all along. Guess who's trans!

Congrats! Being a bisexual transmasc person has been a Journey for me, glad to hear a story like this, makes me hopeful that there's someone out there who will be into the person that I am (Still fairly early in transition, makes me kinda nervous to date for a bunch of reasons) On a related but different note: I taught college genetics for 7 ish years... I always tried to take a few minutes to tall about how sex =/= gender and how sex itself is not a strict binary either, but we were simplifying for the purposes of the course. I hope at least that it was affirming for any potentially non cis students and maybe helped other people better understand the non cis people in their lives. I tried. Biology is so often co-opted in horrible ways to alienate, hurt, silence, harm, and discredit queer people and I hate that, so I wanted to be sure that even in a very fast-paced class I spoke about these things and gave people a real tangible example of an obviously queer person in science. Fuck any textbook that says queer people will grow out of it or whatever.

The line "No. All the people in my class are Mingers" just knocked me out cold, I've not heard someone call someone else a minger in years. All joking aside, by coincidence, I recently decided to rewatch all of Yu-Gi-Oh! The Abridged Series, including all the really homophobic/transphobic/racist early episodes that LK has since apologised for, and it really reminded me that like...I really grew up in a time when the whole LGBTQ+ community was lumped in together as just subtypes of Gay, and homophobia was THIS rife and normal? This was right after Section 28 was axed, too, so it was this weird sudden change from not being told anything about queer people even existing to discovering that queer people exist through yaoi fanfic and this exact flavour of homophobia being the norm among your peers. It's really been making me realise why I'm the kind of queer person I am now as a younger millennial when this was what my teen years looked like.
@unknown_limes10 ай бұрын
Lord this is so real. There was gay, straight ally, girl gay, weirdo who can't pick, crossdresser, and then the rest uhhhhh, don't exist, they break the boundaries of hetero society too much. As much as the early 10s MOGAI was... odd in certain ways, I'm really glad for how it broke down boundaries and treated most identities as perfectly normal, and those who acted homophobic were weird and stupid. That's the community I spent my teen years in as an older Gen Z, and it honestly explains so much.
@Sapphykins10 ай бұрын
It really is insane looking back at how people our age (S28 was repealed when I was in HS so I assume we're pretty close in age) grew up and wondering how the hell we all survived that. YTAS is such a great example as well, because LK's such a genuinely nice guy, and yet there's so many episodes early on in the show that I just entirely skip when I do a nostalgia rewatch because they'll just ruin my whole day. It was just so completely normalised that even someone who genuinely wasn't trying to be malicious unthinkingly regurgitated all these hateful stereotypes and 'jokes' (not to excuse LK, obviously, he should have known better, I just believe him that it was ignorance rather than malice)
@MoonGalleon2210 ай бұрын
@@SapphykinsYeah, I just turned 30 earlier this year, so I was a child/tween at the time (and even then, I already knew what a "lezzer" was - something you didn't want to be accused of being!). I think more people in the UK need to be on the ball about how current transphobic talking points are basically harkening back to S28, and we need to cut that shit out immediately. The bonkers part of it for me is that like...LK has been out as bisexual for about as long as he's been making YGOTAS. He's a queer man, but the atmosphere was so overwhelmingly homophobic and transphobic that he just went along with it - and I think queer people going along with homophobic "jokes" as a defence mechanism was (still is) really common. I think it's all worked out in the end - a weird side-effect of the homophobic humour is that it means pretty much everyone in YGOTAS is depicted as being gay or bi, so he's been able to lean into that while accepting that the earlier "jokes" were just offensive and wrong - but it doesn't change that early YGOTAS is, in and of itself, a time capsule of 2008 homophobia (and racism/antisemitism).

Part of what I hate about biphobia is that we get called slurs too like d*k* and queer and such but like due to the biphobia of the wider LGBTQ community we get criticized for reclaiming those words because our experience is somehow not “pure” enough? If that makes sense even though we literally still have the experiences of those words being used in a negative way towards us
@nicolasnamed10 ай бұрын
I feel this, I think it's because there's a perception of bi people by gay people as being able to more easily "pass" as straight or "choose" when to express as queer. Which might me true for some closeted people, but definitely isn't for those who are out as bisexual. I sometimes feel a little uncomfortable when my partner or our friend (who are both cis bi guys) say the f-slur, because I'm gay and I only ever encountered it as negative. But I'm also trans (ftm) and never really had it used against me specifically as I was growing up. But I know they always use it from the perspective of being queer, and defining thier own queer experience, so I do my best to have space for it for them even if I wouldn't say it. Personally it just still feels too derogatory for me, but that's about my relationship to the word not other people's
