The secret to eating cheap in Israel is find restaurants that are off the main roads or in the Arab sector like Jaffa if you're in Tel Aviv or east Jerusalem. If you stop in restaurants in the touristy sections like Jaffa Rd. in Jerusalem of course it's going to be more expensive because the rents are higher.

Shalom Gabriel, welcome back! Just wanted to clarify the issue with the food (which looked amazing!). The Israeli cuisine is very diverse and eclectic since Jews arrived to Israel after being in the diaspora for 2000 years and brought with them their traditional foods from all over the world. There is a huge Kurdish community in Israel, Jews that came to Israel from Kurdistan and the type of cuisine they enjoy is indeed Kurdish food. You happened upon a restaurant that serves exactly that, and BTW, is one of the best places to eat in Jlem! Great video of a fascinating place!

Most tourists to Jerusalem just visit the Old City, Jaffa Rd. & Mahane Yehuda Market, these are all on the light rail route, but there's so much more to see. If you like ancient ruins, City of David is nearby, the Israel Museum should not be missed, even if you're not a fan of museums. The Ramparts Walk will give you an excellent view of the Old City. There are many churches like the Church of All Nations - 379 CE.

For those who have never been, if near the new train Station, down the block is the Har Zion Hotel (a poor man's King David Hotel). Inside is the Cable Car Museum and a must see (and only 20 mins tops!)! Similar to the Bullet Factory, a Museum bet J'lem and TLV-- they are sort of off the beaten track and less known, but more memorable than most! They are redoing the Har Zion but they will not get rid of the actual Cable Car for the war, even though it is situation just above a (my favorite) suite with a great view of the old city from a wonderful terrace! You can probably find pics online!

If you have not gone to the desert or the Galilee make another visit. We walked across the border from Jordan into Israel which took us about 20 minutes total as we were the only people crossing at that time. Elat just so so but good place to rest a few days with a pool then rent a car and the desert is so beautiful as is the Galilee. You need another visit as do I.

Modern Israel today is literally "the in-gathering of the exiled", where Jews who were exiled for millennia to over 190 countries came back to there reclaimed homeland, bringing their favorite cuisines from all over the planet. If you want really authentic uniquely Israeli food, you're pretty much left to eating bamba, bisli and ptitim...

Jews had lived in exile for millennia all across the middle east, including in Kurdish areas. After Israel was reestablished in 1948, almost all of these Jews left their oppressive Muslim neighbors and came home to live in Israel, bringing their local cuisines with them.

11:20 Interesting how, according to Exodus, when God for the first time spoke to Moses, Moses didn't recognize the voice due to the fact that so much time had passed during the Israelite captivity in Egypt. It was at that point that God revealed his proper name - YWHW - which translates as 'I Am Who I Am.' Fascinating story-telling to say the least.

Bushnak (Arabic: بشناق, meaning “Bosnian” or “Bosniak”, also transliterated Bushnaq, Boshnak and Bouchnak) is a surname common among Palestinians who are of Bosnian origin. Those sharing this surname are the descendants of Bosnian Muslims apprehensive of living under Christian rule after the Austro-Hungarian occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1878, who emigrated to Palestine within the Ottoman empire. While not originally from one family, most Bosnians who emigrated to Palestine adopted Bushnak as a common surname, attesting to their origins. Some Bosnian movement to Palestine occurred when Bosnian Muslim soldiers were brought to Palestine in the late 1800s to provide reinforcements for the Ottoman army. More substantial movement occurred after 1878, when the Austro-Hungarian empire, ruled by the House of Habsburg, occupied Bosnia. Bosnian Muslim emigration continued through this period, escalating after the Austro-Hungarian’s 1908 annexation of Bosnia. Many emigrated to parts of what is now modern Turkey, while a smaller number settled in Syria, Palestine, Lebanon and Jordan. In Palestine, these Bosnian emigrants settled predominantly in villages in the northern parts of the present day West Bank and Israel: Caesarea (Qisarya), Yanun, Nablus and Tulkarem. Their descendants still live in these villages, their Bosnian heritage reflected in the Arab surname of Bushnak. The Bosnian Muslim immigrants who settled in Caesarea in 1878 built two mosques, joining other Muslim immigrants from Morocco, Algeria, Crimea, the Caucasus, and Turkestan. These Slavic speaking immigrants eventually assimilated into the Arab population of Palestine. There is a facebook group of Bushnaqs all over Arab World.
