I don't think American citizens doubt the value of NATO. It's deep in our societal soul that closely working together with others is better than being alone. That's the very nature of how the US started and works today, with 13 colonies coming together and today 50 states which together make the nation. Politicians on the right have found that saying outrageous things gets headlines, but that doesn't mean its reflective of the American spirit.
